Macy's to possibly expand into Omaha..
A possible announcement of an Omaha location for Nordstrom or Neiman-Marcus would definitely carry more Pop..
But our friend Jeff Beals revealed on Grow Omaha this past Saturday that Omaha is one if the top 5 cities on the Macy's expansion list..This was told to Jeff by a reliable Omaha retail source who visited with Macy's officials last week..
And before we get the impending comment: 'Big deal, Sioux Falls SD has a Macy's' (due to the Marshall-Fields buyout)..I for one, would welcome a potential Macy's store into Omaha..At a minimum, it would provide us yet another retail shopping alternative..

I can't say for sure that I saw this coming, but if you all think about it for a moment, over the last 6 mos. to a year, Macy's has been running their ad campaigns on our local channels. Often times, they do that to test the waters on consumer reaction and also indirectly announce the fact that they are planning a store in that market.
I'd say it's a "for sure" event, but of course, what do we all know - we're always behind the times when it comes to new businesses popping up in Omaha! ;)

About a year ago, someone on the forum dropped a "hint" to expect an announcement regarding Macy's in about a year. So, I'm not surprised to hear of this possibility.

The ads we're now seeing for Macy's are national (they were not purchased locally).

I'd love to welcome Macy's to the metro. I wonder where they'd go. Shadown Lake?

In connection with the previous "hint," the location mentioned was possibly Westroads.

Maybe Westroads will drop the stupid idea of tacking on a theater to the main building (Old Younkers) and place a new Macy's at that spot.Minneapolis Boy wrote:In connection with the previous "hint," the location mentioned was possibly Westroads.

Yes - they're bought on a national scale, however, companies such as Macy's can pick & choose which markets they actually run in. And, unless they're trying to draw attention to their stores for some reason, then they wouldn't advertise in that market.Greg S wrote:The ads we're now seeing for Macy's are national (they were not purchased locally).

There is also the old Brandeis space that has been essentially half-empty the last 15 years or so. Only the 2nd and 3rd levels appear to be in use, mostly by TGI Friday's...Anonymous wrote:Maybe Westroads will drop the stupid idea of tacking on a theater to the main building (Old Younkers) and place a new Macy's at that spot.Minneapolis Boy wrote:In connection with the previous "hint," the location mentioned was possibly Westroads.
Macy's could have been a great addition to the Crossroads, much like Dillard's gave it new life after the 80's renovation.

Where TGI Friday's is now, though the store went down into the basement and also to a 4th floor above the entire rest of the mall. Last time I looked, it appears to be a glassed in vacant area on top on the northwest side of the mall.RuralYoungin wrote:Where exactly was the old Brandeis store there?

They need some new profitable areas, given that they ticked off Chicago by killing the much revered Marshall Field's brand off. Their same store sales plummeted here as a result of boycotts by Chicagoans.
Kinda makes me laugh, actually. I for one wouldn't shop there just because of this. It'd be like some company nobody in Omaha's ever heard of coming in and buying NFM, then changing the name despite lots of protests.

If you look at Macy's website, you'll notice that Nebraska is one of very few states that doesn't have a Macy's. It just makes sense to have it. I know that they have been building a lot of new stores in outdoor malls.

My dream location would be 16th and Jackson. Boot the Greyhound Station somewhere else and build a nice dense Macy's with parking underneath:

Oh don't get me wrong, I understand how businesses work with regards to location. I know that there's about a .005% chance they'll locate on 16th street.Omaha Cowboy wrote:Honestly..Downtown would be my dream location as well..Right on old 16th St..

LaVista would welcome Macy's with open arms. Couldn't think of a better fit right alongside Cabela's and the new Embassy Suites Hotel and Conference Center.

First of all if it wasn't for the "Metro Area" Omaha would not have what it has. Secondly, with comments like that, people will start staying in Sarpy County soon after all the retail development and restaurants are complete. Lastly, don't expect a Macy's to look like the pictures that were posted. Just saw one back east and they are nothing to get excited about, just another Yonkers, Von Maur, Jones Store type place. They are trying to appeal to the "regular shopper" not as high end as you would think.

Regardless of where it may go..I think we can all agree rationally that Macy's would be a sweet addition to metro Omaha..

Note where the ads are falling. Are they in a local set of ads, or lumped in with the network set? Back to back with a Woodhouse, or with Kleenex?Greg S wrote:

Yes - they're bought on a national scale, however, companies such as Macy's can pick & choose which markets they actually run in. And, unless they're trying to draw attention to their stores for some reason, then they wouldn't advertise in that market.
Even then, ad agencies frequently default to Top 100 markets when placing ads for national retailers. Just because there's no Macy's in Omaha yet is no reason not to promote the brand. I doubt there's a rep at any local TV stations talking with Macys... the agency of record contacts regional reps who place automatic buys in markets numbered 1 through whatever at predetermined rates. It's a lot more economical to do it that way than to pick and choose.

Excuse me, but I think you have that equation backwards. And I, like most people, are aware that Macy's is pretty much just another department store, but it WOULD be a welcome addition to the Metro's shopping offerings. And if it were to go in La Vista or Papillion, GREAT!Hoop wrote:First of all if it wasn't for the "Metro Area" Omaha would not have what it has.

Your right, I was just trying to make a point that we are all for the same goal, more development and more options, not if one area gets it or the other. Thanks for the clarification, I to would welcome Macy's to the area and how about and IKEA as well?

Don't hold your breath for IKEA. They were recently quoted as saying they were only interested in city markets with 2,000,000.
I don't see why Omaha couldn't get a Macy's we've been adding lots of new retailers lately.

If the Jones store had not closed at Westroads we'd have one now. Jones was part of May Department stores and all of those converted to Macy's. There are Macy's all over KC now in the old Jones store locations. We hit one at Town Center when we were down there for the Big 12 game and got some great deals for Xmas.

I guess that's one way to do it... personally, I'd rather have another choice (actually, I like Dillard's)... than just have the 'privilege' of having it renamed to Macy's.

All indications I've received from my more than credible source for this rumor, was that Macy's is looking into Omaha market expansion..As opposed to this separate 'rumor' of purchasing Dillard's and morphing it into a Macy's..
