Walmart Supercenter (Wick's Southpointe - Gretna)

On the KFAB news this AM they are reporting that Wal-Mart has presented a plan to build a Wal-Mart at I80 & Hwy 370. They said it would be around 180,000 SF super center and include all of the usual, groceries, lube, deli, junk, ect. They said it was not a done deal but the first hurdle had been crossed and that was the area that they wanted had been zoned retail.

Not sure which corner of the intersection that would be on but my "guess" would be that maybe we are talking about basically the NW side near where the new gas station just opened. That would also have a Gretna Address as reported.

Actually I think that's the SW corner. 3rd Walmart in Sarpy county in 5 years..oy...

Who has jurisdiction over this area? No nearby residents... this has the potential to be the ugliest looking Walmart in the metro.

Yeah, that's what I'm afraid of too. It is beyond Gretna's zoning jurisdiction. That leaves Sarpy County, and I don't know what kind of standards they have. This interchange has/had a lot of potential - I'm afraid the blandness will continue. I hope I'm wrong!

I had thought Papillion planned for this intersection to be the beautified gateway to the city w/ many building/zoning restrictions and its turning into |expletive|. Hopefully the proposed 180th/I-80 Interchange will be better planned.

"This area is not quite in Papillion or in Gretna, so we're working with county planning staff," Horn said.

Horn said the giant retailer did not know when its plans would receive approval from the county. Wal-Mart wants to start construction later this year and open for business in late summer 2008.

He also said the company planned to landscape the property to create a buffer between a wetlands area and a housing development about a half-mile away.

Unless this is already a done deal, why not just build it in La Vista at Southport like Cabelas did, just a few miles east of the HWY 370 interchange. With La Vista's design standards that could be the metros nicest Wal-Mart. Seems to me this would be a better spot anyway to serve La Vista, Millard, Gretna, southwest Sarpy County etc. I think Cabelas and Wal-Mart would make a great anchor to that development if done right.

I dunno about a Super Walmart in Southport. That place seems a lil too classy for a walmart in my opinion. Wasn't Southport one of the possible locations for the rumored Macy's?[/url]

I'm sure Gretna could use a Wal-Mart. There are so many homes out there. I'm sitting here thinking about the name "Gretna." I'm not sure that has always been my favorite name. Like, I think of the name "Gretchen, NE" or something.
Or, maybe "ReGRETNA."

OK. Enough said here. I know I'm weird. :-)

Nah. Gretna has kind of a pretty ring to it. But, it is not my favorite Omaha suburb name. I like the name "Elkhorn" the best. With Elkhorn, I think of a rustic, fancy mountain lodge with an elk's head hanging over the fireplace. It sounds rugged and rich to me.

I heard from what I consider a very reliable source over the weekend that there is other development already pending for this area. The tree farm on 168th & 370 has been sold and my source tells me that the buyer has options with Hyvee and Lowe's to build on this site just to the N of the Walmart location. Anybody have any insight to this or any other pending development in the area?

Anyone heard any more about this possible WalMart location? There seems to be a little more activity in the way of infrastructure that has taken place recently. They did a BUNCH of dirt work and infrastructure work 8 - 9 months ago and then nothing happened. I assumed that this got put on the back burner. There was not time frame in any published stuff I saw but I was total verbally that it was to start being built this spring and that didn't happen.

From my daily driving by this area I am guessing there is some life back in this project. Across from the gas station there is now a perminent sign for this retail development that has went up in the last two weeks or so. There open spaces for business names but the top spot as an official Walmart logo sign on it that is twice the size of the other spots.

Along with this there is a bunch of earth moving equipment going to work in the construction area and it looks like they are doing some below grade infrastructure installation. There is also the tell tale standard plywood and 2X4 construction posting board erected at the end of the payment to post all the construction rules and noticed.

Looks to be a last 2010 opening with a slightly smaller store than originally planned. Will be interesting to see if anything else pops up as mentioned. I think it would be a tough draw to get outlying stores / restaurants built right now.

Drove by yesterday between 4:30 and 5. Keep in mind for future reading that it was about -5 with a slight breeze. They were still placing precast concrete wall panels and it did not look like one of the more fun jobs of the day. From the looks of what had been done they had been at it all day. Not what I would want to be doing but better than unemployment. The guy in the snorkel lift looked to be the worst off.

haha yeah I did that exact job all summer long... I think the guys trying to hold on to the precast on the ground have a worse job, not only is it cold and wet but you have to worry about a "15 ton" concrete slab falling on you

If that slab falls on you there really isn't much to worry about. The outcome is predetermined just like the precast.

I drive by daily and I have had the same thought. It looks to me like the front entrance has a different design than I have seen. There is a fair amount of curved steal at the entrance's that may end up being covered or may just be painted. I will have to grab my camera for one of the trips past.

Wow, that is going to look dated in all of five years. Honestly, it looks a lot like the crappy particle board furniture they sell inside the store.

On second though, I suppose it's not a problem since they'll abandon it to build a new store in ten years.

I guess I just don't understand why people give a |expletive| what the front of a Wal-Mart looks like? It's a Wal-Mart....or a K-Mart, Target, No Frills, Bakers....why would I expect any of them to be some graceful pinnacle of architecture???

Having seen how big box stores are built in other cities it is obvious that Omaha's design standards are lower than other cities. Having said that it really isn't the end of the world.

I noticed this too lol in atlanta wal marts aren't suppose to be visible from the streets that lead onto them so they build a wall of trees to block the view haha could go for that here honestly...
