Gretna businessman Randy Sump hopes to add more pit stop options along the route.
He has planned a seven-acre retail center, to be called Springfield Plaza, at the southeast corner of Highway 50 and Platteview Road.
Sump has secured one tenant — a Subway sandwich shop — while awaiting city approval for the project, and has three potential tenants for the initial six-bay building. He declined to reveal the potential tenants' names.
A second six-bay building, a stand-alone bank or medical facility and a grocery or hardware store would round out the center, Sump said.
The project is the "next natural step" for development in Springfield, he said.
The town of about 1,500 doesn't have a lot of medical or other needed services, Sump said.
"They're not going to get it, I think, until there's good facilities," he said. "Now that there's a four-lane highway going through there, I think everything is going to want to be on that highway."
