Another Baker's grocery store closing

Post by icejammer »

This time at Baker's Square:

Baker's closing store at 132nd and W. Center
The Baker's grocery store at 132nd Street and West Center Road will close for good at 6 p.m. Jan. 19, a company spokeswoman said Thursday.

Sheila Lowrie, a regional spokeswoman for the grocery chain, declined to discuss sales performance at the store in the Baker's Square shopping plaza. But she said the closure was based on customer traffic.

"Many of our Baker's customers are choosing to shop with us at our newer, more modern store at Westwood Plaza," she said. . . .
"Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice; it is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved."

Not a surprise given that they had two so close together.

That's too bad. I don't often go there, but it's an easy stop for me on the way back from work if I need something.

I think they have three stores not too far apart. Westwood and the one off Q, the one they showed in About Schmidt.

I had a feeling this was going to happen fairly quickly when US Bank moved their location from the 132nd store to the 120th location.

Another store that was once the "golden child" of the company is gone. Actually I am surprised it lasted this long.

I posted this on another board but I guess its relevant to this discussion...

Two shopping centers are being sold with Baker's being the anchor...is this coincidence...

Deerfield, $9,950,000 Offer on a 9.4% Cap

Plaza North, $15,850,000 Offer on a 8.46% Cap

With Baker's moving out of Frederick Square - I thought this was interesting to say the least.

Additionally, I thought the cap rates were being offered pretty reasonably considering the location and financial history of the sites.

How supremely ironic. This store was Baker's first west Omaha store, and Omaha's first "mega" grocery store (by 1970s standards). Heck, they even named the shopping center after Baker's, and spent many months in court duking it out with Vicorp (Village Inn) over use of the term "Baker's Square" (that was the name Vicorp gave to their pies in all of the U.S. except for Nebraska, because Baker's sued to keep use of the name Baker's Square for Baker's supermarkets and not for the pies).
I have many fond memories of shopping at this Baker's as a kid with my Mom. I used to offer to help her go shopping on Saturdays so I could end up with her buying some of my favorite foods. Another irony, I just got back from shopping at the Baker's on Saddle Creek tonight when I first read this story!

Although I have not shopped at Baker's Square in years, I will miss this store.

"the Square" was the flagship. Thats where managers wanted to go. Many managers of "the square" went on to bigger and better thing.

As far as naming "the square" after bakers... It was owned and developed by PDM, which was Jack Baker's company, so they named it after themselves.
