haha, thats a new one. When we were traveling back from the Des Moines area this past weekend there was a road crew truck dumping/pouring brine onto the road. I've never seen that, usually they have a spray bar to distribute it but it was literally pouring out of a pipe, gallons at a time. Whats even more weird is that is was raining at that time so I am not sure that it was going to help anyway.

I always hated when I lived in CB and had to drive across the 480 bridge, they would use the brine almost daily, even when nothing was forecast.

Yeah, seems like a pretty big waste - especially considering whatever we do end up getting is just going to melt early next week with 40s starting Monday and 50s expected by Wednesday.

All models are in agreement now (including the GFS) with bringing only dusting to most people in our area (with the higher totals northeast of us into IA). Since it'll be cold, the snow ratios will be higher but it should still be a non-event for the area. The bigger change will be the brief shot of cold air that moves in behind the snow prior to our warm up next week.

These are the depicted snow totals based on the 12z HRRR. The heavier band of snow has trended further north and east pushing it further away from Omaha.

Iowa has been getting hit pretty consistently these past few weeks with several 2-4 inch snow storms. Basically missing extreme SW Iowa and Omaha.

That temp dropped off quick man. Went to Walmart around 4 , 4:30, and I could tell things were changing, came out to snow coming down. Not a lot, but with the wind and cold, being Friday, and with the way people were driving with their heads screwed on backwards, I said |expletive| that, I'm going home haha.

A pretty nice warm up starting Monday. We are in the deep freeze today and tomorrow but the cold is short lived.

This is perfect snow. Light and dry enough it won't stick, but enough for the ambiance. I love it when all I have to do pull out the leaf blower to clear my surfaces, easy as pie. Love it. I was gonna push broom it, started to and said sshhhheeeeet, don't even have to do that much.

The forecast for the second half of December is looking dry with no real shots of cold air or widespread snow for the area. This is being depicted on both the ECMWF and GFS models currently and has been for several runs now - which increases confidence.

The jet stream and consequently storm track have shifted north some which is allowing for stretches of warmer air in our area and little to no frozen precip. We might get a little light rain later this week but otherwise, it's looking dry for the foreseeable future anyway.

Obviously the further you go out in time, the less reliable and things can always quickly change but there's currently a relatively good chance the remainder of December will be uneventful.

Should get some rain tonight (mostly during the overnight hours) and then some strong wind again tomorrow with gusts up to 60 mph. Sounds like gusts of 110 mph+ with this system already out in WY today. Thankfully the brunt of it should move through the Dakotas and to our west/northwest so we'll only be grazed by the strong winds.

Nothing says "Christmas" like temperatures near 60 - highs on Christmas Eve/Christmas day should end up somewhere around that anyway.

Long range still isn't showing much noteworthy other than the GFS is "trying" to hint at a pattern change toward the end of the month. This isn't really reflected on the ECMWF though so odds are currently very low.

We hit the 80s a few years back, though that came with the Northern Hemisphere's first December Derecho and something like 90+ tornados

Considering the atypical December weather to start the week, I will take this for Christmas. At least its chilly and foggy. I poked my head outside at about 5 juat to check the feel and the fog, and actually saw a flash of lightning. It was so weak, I wouldnt doubt it was the only one. Wasn't even considering that as a possibility.

Yeah. The average high in the month of December is 39°F.

So l, at the present moment, we are seeing 10°F to 20°F degrees above normal.

Being off by ten degrees would see 29°F or 49°F degrees. Being off by twenty degrees would see 19°F or 59°F for the highs.

39°F. +0
29°F, 49°F. +/- 10
19°F, 59°F. +/- 20

We have swung both ways this month and are averaging 40°F right now (for the month). So right about at average.

BTW, our normal lows for the month is 20°F we are at 18°F. So also very close.

IMO, odds are starting to increase we will see some snow Sunday in parts of the area - possibly including Omaha.

There will probably be some areas where accumulating snowfall will be at least impactful and cause some slick roads, etc. This currently is most likely to occur north of Omaha in northeast NE into the northern half of IA but it's still too far out to see the storm fully on the short range models. The 00z run tonight should show it fully though. Other models do show it filling in far enough south to hit Omaha as well - so possibly a dusting up to 2 or 3 inches in our area depending on timing of everything.

Just a early heads up anyway. The NWS forecast has already gone from really no chance of snow for Sunday as of Yesterday to a 30% today. Don't be surprised if that quickly jumps up to "likely" if model trends continue.

Lol - ehh, they missed on that one (something I do fairly often as well if I'm being honest). I feel like I personally was pretty spot on with that one though. I never could understand what KETV was thinking with that forecast. Eventually they updated it and backed off but still. Oh well though.

But really though to clarify, most people will probably see minor accumulations Sunday but it still might be enough with the temp plummeting for things to get icy relatively quick. I'd lean towards on inch of snow or less in Omaha itself unless the timing changes some (which is still possible) with the slightly heavier stuff north of town yet. The 12z ECMWF that just came in continues to also show snow but it shows it pushing through most of our area fast which means we'd end up with a dusting if even that. Either way, this storm looks like it'll turn into a significant storm as it pushes into the great lakes region early next week so at least we're dodging that bullet this time.

Coming back from Dallas for the Christmas holiday and the temps were 75-80 (which is unusually warm for DFW this time of year). Back in Omaha late today and hope to enjoy the nice Saturday temps and hope for little to nothing as far as frozen precipitation Sunday…

Interesting to see such a long period of time where the temperature will never go up. After this afternoon's high, the temperature will only drop until Monday morning. I reckon the long slide has to do with the high starting temp.

We left the hockey rink about 9am and when we were pulling out, there was a "Snow Tornado" on the football field at Hitchcock Park. When we got there at 7:30am it was still above freezing and no precipitation. Already down to 19 in my neighborhood.

In my part of Council Bluffs (South) it was 39 degrees about 6 am. Now about 5 hours later it's 22. Bleh.

Sounds like roads in Omaha are terrible with black ice issues and many accidents ongoing currently (I haven’t been out, just saw online so it “could be” inaccurate). Unfortunately, that doesn’t surprise me if true. Snow is mostly done now though with just light stuff left.

We live on a hill, and there’s been several cars going by, spinning their tires trying to get to the top.

Today has been maybe the coldest most miserable winter day we’ve had so far. Can’t wait for the 40 on Tuesday.

Today got me thinking. Yes, it was frightful outside. Not exactly my cup of tea, but if I had to choose my extreme, it would be the cold one.

So, the average high temperature span across the entire year here is 62. I would take that every day honestly lol. Anyway, if the temperature at what would normally be the peak temp was 18 today, thats minus 44 degrees, while on the other hand, 44 degrees above is 106. Once I thought about it that way, decidedly, I felt much better about a day like today

I think you forgot from about 2 weeks ago when the high was only 14. Today was frigid, especially the wind chill, but the first 1/2 of December was very cold and far below average. The last 2 weeks were very mild, but it’s not like we haven’t had any cold weather yet.

I would personally take 106 over this, but then again I really hate the cold and don't mind heat, even when it's extreme. I'm honestly probably better off in the south, but I love Omaha too much to leave. I wish we could have gotten all the 60s and upper 70s western Nebraska got this month.

Winter isn't complete without a day like today IMO. It sucks outside, but theres no better feeling than getting inside and getting cozy, and appreciating not being out there. Can't get that feeling without the conditions.

We're all different. I recently found out my genetics are mostly Scandinavian and German. I never really looked into the correlation between that and geography, but came to find Germany, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden are all pretty much an equivalent latitude of Canada on north.

So I'm too far south haha. Even here. So learning that, it makes sense why I would be coded to like it cold. I had a co worker who was Venezuelan (grew up in New York though). I'll never forget, it was like the first kinda chilly day of the year, yet it was only 50ish. I was totally relishing the day, and just wearing a t-shirt. The guy said something like "are you f-ing crazy?" He was totally bundled up in his hoodie looking like he was freezing. I just said something to the like of "dude, this is great!"

If it says anything else, Its currently 9 degrees outside, I have my thermostat at 60, its 58 at my bedside, I had a fire in my fireplace today, I can hear the wind howling, yet im bundled up in my sheets, and I tell ya, I couldn't be more comfy.

When I lived in MN, I had an Ethiopian co-worker who was experiencing their first MN winter. Same thing - it was around 50 degrees outside (winter hadn't REALLY started yet) and he had a heavy winter coat, gloves, stocking hat, etc on. I had him convinced for a while that "frost bite" was actually from very large mosquito-like bugs that only come out when it's really really cold out and they bite you - so he was terrified to go outside on the really cold days until I admitted to him I was just messing with him. This was back in the mid-90s when I was a high school kid before most people had access to internet, etc so he had no idea. Maybe kinda mean but I was a dumb high school kid - lol.

Anyhow, looking at model guidance this morning, temps will rebound back into the 30s and 40s after today for much of the remainder of this week so the little bit of snow/ice we have will be gone in no time. Currently things look very quiet on the long range until we get into the 2nd week in January but thats stuff that's way too far out to be at all reliable. Unless things change, the next 7-10 days should be pretty uneventful in the local area with storms continuing to track to our north and pulling up warm air into our area from the south before pulling cold air back down into our area behind the storm - so brief shots of cold air before warming up again. Not AS warm as what we've had recently but still, well above freezing most days at least.

It was nice that this past week it stayed well above freezing, even overnight. Our normal lows are below 20 this time of year so a bit strange to have so many days well above. The dew point around 40 made it feel much warmer along with the temperature not dropping quickly/much after dark.
