Recently the Sunday edition has lacked a separate Living section. If there was an announcement of this change I must have missed it. They have shuffled some of the syndicated advice columns that were always located in the Living section into the Midlands section, which seems an odd fit. I also have noticed this past Sunday that there appeared to be zero W-H writers contributing content of the sort that has always appeared in the Living section. Are there any lights left on at the W-H, and is anyone left at home?

When I was a kid in the 80s, delivering the OWH, the "non newsy" part of the paper (Living section, comics, ads, Magazine of the Midlands, etc) was usually dropped off to our house on Thursday, then on Sunday morning when the news part of the OWH was printed and distributed to our house we'd put the two parts together and delivered them Sunday morning. The Sunday paper is so small now it's probably printed at the same time. Last time I actually bought a Sunday OWH at the store, there were no ads in it. Sometimes I think the OWH has more staff on the Husker beat than any other department.

The Detroit papers are delivered in Thursday, Friday & Sunday. I used to love the OWH printed editions up until the 2000's. The Sunday edition was huge. Now I just have zero use for newspapers. It's sad.

It is sad. For years many of us enjoyed poking fun at some of the dumber things published in or done by the W-H. Now frankly they have become a paper tiger. They aren’t really worth belittling any longer. They are down for the count.

Just did my annual call to the OWH. They wanted $195 for annual online only subscription. I was able to get them to agree to $26 for the whole year.

I'm sure they are well aware of the value of any individual "subscriber" and their data when it comes to ad sales and selling your info and base your rates off of that.

At what point would it just make since to have the rate at say $40 for a year of on line and have a much larger base. Maybe I am off base and the total would not grow a lot but my guess is that it would

I’m not sure which aspect of this is crazier - the joke of an initial ask or how much they came down from it.

They actually offered me 3 different rates but I had gotten an email from OWH sent to my old email for the $26 annual price. I mentioned it to him and he put me on hold to talk to his manager (for a whole 3 sec) and then came back and said they would honor it.

I had one of the 6 months for a buck promotion a couple of years ago for Huskers coverage, I canceled it as the promotion ended, but the OWH never shut my access off.

Basically that they are going to print OWH, Lincoln Journal Star, Nonpareil, and Sioux City Journal in Des Moines at a print facility that they own there.

I am surprised that it actually took this long.

It also states that they plan to sell the Freedom Center that has housed their production since 2001.

So, out of curiosity, are semi trucks used to bring the newspapers from Des Moines to Minneapolis, Kansas City, and in a few weeks, Omaha? This is sad and crazy.

On another note, think of the delays now that the paper will be coming from Des Moines, with weather, late evening Husker football games, etc ..

You will get your Saturday night Husker game coverage in the print editon on Monday. Just another reason why it's going to be all digital soon and the Sioux Falls paper is printed in Des Moines as well.

Me too.

I'm old enough to have worked downtown when they were delivering by rail on the 14th and Capitol, the old building.

Maybe another concert hall/venue like the Printworks in London.

When the OWH eventually closes shop, as someone on X said, we want to see Shatel crash out like Barfneckt and Chatelian did. (BTW, for me, the final straw was when it was exposed they were protecting their access to NU through the Moos Files)

If you consider shipping logistics, Des Moines to Omaha isn't that big of a commute. Even with late sportsball games, just print most of the paper early, have the carriers throw in a sport supplemental and send it.

That is where the newspaper industry went wrong. They can't compete with the timeliness of the internet and how quickly information (sports scores and news) gets around. They needed to compete based on quality of providing articles that were created and edited with some thought behind them.

I used to love looking at box scores and standings for sports all on one page, but I highly doubt than anyone does that anymore. Especially when you can access that info on any computer or phone in a few seconds.

The Wall Street Journal is a rare success story with their subscription model, but print media definitely suffered from initially dismissing the digital revolution of news.

Yesterday evening was the final game of the 2026 College World Series. The game wasn’t exactly a nail biter, but without doubt it is the single most important sports event of the entire year to take place here in Omaha, and it ended up crowning the University of Oklahoma as the national champs. The game ended a bit before 10 pm.
Visible from the grandstand is a downtown tower, which has a giant “World-Herald” sign adorning its upper floors.
This morning the World-Herald sports section led with stories about Nebraska football, including a front page piece about upcoming changes to the team’s uniforms. Elsewhere the paper carried a story discussing the pros and cons of single ply versus three ply toilet paper.
Nowhere in today’s newspaper was there even a paragraph of coverage of the championship World Series game. Likewise, today’s “e-edition” of the newspaper was totally silent as to details of yesterday’s game.
WOW. Just WOW.

This is going to happen also when the Huskers have evening football games. Earlier deadline as the OWH is now printed in Des Moines. I think the Kansas City Star is also now printed in Des Moines.

I'm assuming Mike Patterson from the OWH was there (I have seen him many other games), Gary Sharp from the OWH was there (talked to him on the field after the game), and the entire photography staff of Chris, Nikos, and an Intern were all there. Seems crazy to devote all those resources to something and not mention the CWS at all, even if only online.

Its also crazy how the national media has changed. here are some comparisons to the first year at the downtown ballpark and this year:

OWH was 4 or 5 now 3
AP was 4 now 1
Sports Illustrated was 3 now 0
USA Today was 2 still 2
Getty Images was 2 now 0
ESPN Images was 0 or 1, now 2 or 3 (Does not include all the video people)

Depending on the Des Moines print schedule, maybe even 2:30 games too. The Sioux Falls, Minneapolis & St Paul papers are printed in Des Moines as well.

Man, I remember the weight and value to the Newspaper. Big news events, Husker national Championships, the joy of buying that tangible physical evidence of a big event. Holding onto that for sometimes decades. pulling it out to remember. None of that matters anymore. The internet changed and killed it.

There is no depth to reporting. There is no need for a physical memento of the big event. It's really just disposable waste now.

Absolutely. I still have an OWH extra edition from 9-11, and the papers when the Huskers won their national championships in the 1990s.

What I don't understand is that the owh printing plant is newer than the one in dsm & when purchased was best in class. Why print there & not Omaha?

My guess is I80 & I35 are prob better suited for logisitcs routes than I80 & I29.
