Well I guess we know what Grandpa does for a job, the most positive and informative he’s ever been about a topic.

Emily Szink - morning anchor - was let go from KMTV a week or so ago after 5.5 years.

Ouch. She wasn't my type, but she was good at her job. :-( Must have found someone who will work for minimum wage.

EDIT: I don't want to watch the video at work, but at least they let her say goodbye: https://www.3newsnow.com/news/local-new ... is-morning

Dont watch that channel, but her sign off was a class act. Hope she moves on successfully.

I usually have this channel on while getting ready for work. They have gone through quite a few in the last few years with McPike the only one still there

I agree. I take offense that my comment above was creepy. I noted that her sign off was classy and that I wished her well in her future career. I don't see that as anywhere close to creepy.

I think he was pointing outthe ‘not my type’ line. Which can be construed as creepy. However, I assume you just meant her news delivery style.

Yeah, and I'll speak to that: It's kinda esoteric, hackneyed and stereotypical, but blondes, especially younger ones, have to do more for me to take them seriously. That's a failing on my part, sure--but the fact that Emily worked for CH 3 was one strike against me taking her seriously because 3 for the longest time didn't take news seriously. The second strike because I rarely watch 3 in the morning because 6 has Serese and 7 has a bevy of interesting newsreaders.

Louie, my mind was made up on her without me having heard her read. I don't watch morning news expecting compelling oratory style, and that's me selling selling Emily, in particular, short. I have no doubt she's competent, intelligent and a gentlelady, but simply put I never made a connection with her. I don't think I'd recognize her on the street, but if I encountered her she'd get nothing but the respect I afford anyone.

Per her Facebook page:

My job as a journalist is to be transparent and honest and that is what I want to do with you. Today was my last day at KMTV after 5 1/2 years.

Yes, I'm sure that is a shock to 99% of you and I apologize for that, but I've been extremely private about this.

A little over a month ago I was told my contract was not being renewed. I will be honest, it came as an absolute shock. I think for the most part I was a great employee, got out of bed everyday at 230 a.m. (which is not easy), was competitive, won numerous awards, was a mentor and was a friend to all. What confused me the most is a few months prior my boss was begging me to sign a new contract.

For weeks I've been trying to process the news and it kept coming back to the fact that it must have something to do with my talent, I must not be cut out for this business. You start to second guess yourself when you're alone with your thoughts. What adds salt in the wounds is I have given up so much for this job. I've missed weddings, birthdays, girls trips, holidays and love is definitely hard to find when you're married to you're job.

But, I promised myself no matter how much it hurt, I was working hard until my last day. My mom told me the perfect quote the other day, "it doesn't matter how you start, they remember how you finish."

From this I've learned that sometimes the bad things in life put us directly on the path to the best things that will ever happen to us. I don't know what that path is just yet, but it will lead me to an amazing job, new city, chance at love and happiness and who doesn't want that?! If you've made it this far, thank you and hopefully the best is yet to come. For now I'm taking a nap and then a nice long vacation! #StayTuned

Appropriate amount of snark on her part. It's a horrible business to be in. Look at how many newsreaders bail to to PR, Corp Comm, HR. Brandi at Dist 66, Jodi Baker at OPPD, there's a lady at MECA/CHI Auditorium who's name escapes me, and plenty others.

I remember when Christine Craft won the first age discrimination lawsuit, the station's image consultant said she wasn't 'deferential toward men'. That made me puke.

Emily: Safe travels.

It is a tough business, very few make a long term career out of it. It starts off as sorta glamorous and exciting job then you see how cut throat it is. I heard it’s better if you can get in a larger market at least top 30. Omaha is #69. North Platte I believe is one of the smallest.

You have no idea what local news can be until you leave Omaha even for a visit & watch local news in a major market. Even here in Detroit which is a top 20 market I no longer cringe when watching the news.

As for the person who left the post regarding her contract not being renewed, I might suggest that she remember that lots of people are fired from jobs for any number of reasons. Sure in our day you can leave a long winded statement or manifesto or whatever but now it's out there forever and available to anyone to see, including (in all likelihood) someone considering her for a position. If she would have shown me this post prior to her posting it I would have suggested buying a cheap bottle of wine & deleting the post. As the saying goes (paraphrasing) Better to say nothing & have people possibly think you're a fool, or worse, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

I've hired and fired a lot of people in the course of my career. What someone says prior to being hired is a lot easier to find these days than in the 70s, 80s & even the 90s.

So Courtney Johns is the new morning anchor at KMTV? She used to anchor the 4:00 newscast on 10/11 here in Lincoln.

There was something oddly familiar about the news anchors outfit on KMTV 3 news tonight. If only I could remember what it was...... Oh yeah now I remember.

Channel 3 made more changes.

Cut the Noon news, cut the 4pm news, changing the 5pm news to a Scripts syndicated news, and cut the weekend evening news casts

Staff that have left:
Emily Szink - morning anchor (posted earlier)
Craig Nigrelli - evening anchor
Joe Spadea -News Director

Sounds like the same drastic cost cutting measures at channel 3 that the World Herald has taken and we know how well that has worked out.

Wow...how soon before KMTV 3 news is outsourced like KPTM 42 news?... that new 5 pm news cast was strange, and no weather segment until 5:18.

Apparently their 6:00 newscasts are now an hour long. They still have their weekend newscasts at 10 PM.

I think locally the stations here had over saturated the market. I never understood news starting at 4 and with exception of 5:30, running until 7. I'm just not sure there is demand anymore for that much local news.

As far as traveling, I guess I feel differently on our local news. I've been for the most part disappointed in the quality of the local newscasts in larger markets. You always figured they talent is usually moving to the bigger ones, but the on air talent in bigger markets continually has left me questioning how they got there.

KMTV news I think has improved in recent years. But they still struggle. I think just out of habit people in Omaha watch 7 or 6 news more. Because traditionally they have been the stronger newscasts in town. I know I did.

If you ask me, KMTV went downhill in the early-to-mid 90's when Tom Bevacqua left, they dropped "Jeopardy!" and "Wheel of Fortune" from their schedule, changed the name of their newscasts from NewsCenter 3 to Channel 3 News, then changed their "3" logo in 1999. Then in 2002, they did something really stupid by dropping their 6:00 newscast and their sports segment. At least in 2006, they did some things right by adopting a much better "3" logo and bringing back their sports segment. That was a smart move.

But KMTV just hasn't been the same since 1993.

Follow the money. :) Local news has devolved into such a low-budget affair that it's cheaper to produce yet another 1/2 hour of so-called news than it is to syndicate a popular game or magazine show.

One thing I will admit is that over the past couple of years, many of the larger markets seem to be doing more of the happy-talk thing and inane filler than they were. Again, it costs almost nothing to produce a minute or two of banter, compared to actual news reporting.

I think that is a huge part of it, but the other part of it is I wonder how badly KETV is killing the competition in ratings right now. For WOWT not to want to go head-to-head at 6 after decades of having a broadcast there and to move Jeopardy as a lead-in for a 6:30 broadcast makes me think they were probably getting murdered at 5:00 and 6:00. Similarly for KMTV, if our position is that it is cheaper to produce local |expletive| news content than syndication (and I agree that could very well be the case), I don't think KMTV cuts their noon, 4, and 5 news. There are a couple of things going on here.

Probably, but considering that it was an empty hulk and that no other rail service was interested, overall it’s a good thing to have them there.

Most likely they received some fed & state tax credits for the historic rehab, and probably some TIF from the City of Omaha, and maybe some tax breaks for energy efficiency too. All in all it was a win-win for Omaha having KETV locate downtown while preserving an Iconic remnant of Omaha's railroad history, right across from the Durham. Considering all of the previous attempts that failed over the years, it could not have turned out any better, in my opinion. I just hope local broadcast stations don't start to diminish and struggle to survive like local newspapers have.
