Alabama DB transfer Kaine Williams commits to Nebraska

Nebraska's secondary added another defensive back Sunday, when Alabama transfer Kaine Williams — a four-star recruit in the 2021 class — committed to the Huskers.

Williams, who announced his decision on Twitter, made an official visit to NU this weekend with former Crimson Tide teammate and Husker defensive line transfer target Stephon Wynn.

The 6-foot-2, 203-pounder from Marrero, Louisiana — the hometown of current receivers coach Mickey Joseph — appeared in one game for Alabama last season, preserving his redshirt. He'll have four seasons of eligibility remaining.

Well that can't be bad. I'm sure any player that was recruited and accepted by Alabama can make noise anywhere else. No matter if second or third string there, the whole team is consistently stacked. So the boys got a part of the good litter.

DL Stephon Wynn Jr. Announces Transfer Destination
Wynn will be headed to Nebraska to join the Cornhuskers, per his Instagram.

Former Alabama defensive lineman Stephon Wynn Jr. is transferring to Nebraska, a post on his Instagram confirms. Wynn made the announcement on Sunday evening. Wynn entered his name into the portal and announced his intentions to transfer back on April 20. Soon afterwards, Wynn wrote a note that he posted on social media thanking Alabama coach Nick Saban and his staff.

"First off, I would like to thank Coach Saban and all of the staff associated with the University of Alabama for an amazing four years," Wynn wrote. "You all have made a lot of my childhood dreams come true, and I am very grateful for the time that I have spent here. "My family and I feel that it is in my best interest to enter my name into the transfer portal and finish my college career elsewhere. Thank you Roll Tide Nation for all the love and support over the years. I will forever be an alumnus of the University of Alabama!"

Wynn, a redshirt senior, appeared in seven games last season recording five tackles and a quarterback hurry. According to Pro Football Focus, the 6-foot-4, 307-pound defender appeared in 82 total snaps, including 68 on defense. In addition to serving as a backup defensive lineman, Wynn also worked on the field goal/extra point kicking and blocking units. Wynn came to Alabama from IMG Academy in 2018, The Anderson, S.C., native was rated as the No. 74 overall player and No. 3 strongside defensive end in his class, according to the 247Composite.

What's everyone's barometer on the Huskers for the 2022 season? I never want to get too excited, but my confidence in them at least making a bowl game has gone up substantially since the end of the season. They seem to be having a heck of an off-season in the transfer department. However, I think a lot of them coming in are upperclassmen looking to boost their draft stock, so I think they may be gone after a year. So I think this season could be much better than seasons past. I am looking for them to finish the regular season 2nd-4th in the west with up to a 9-3 record. And ya know, even getting back up to that mark we were all so disappointed in them achieving year after year would be cause for celebration. Though, I'm cautiously optimistic.

Nebraska adds their 15th transfer for 2022 in Texas WR Marcus Washington

The Nebraska football team added their 15th player from the transfer portal for the 2022 season. Texas wide receiver Marcus Washington is the latest transfer portal player to join the NU roster for this season and the 33rd overall scholarship addition. 33 new scholarship players are the most-ever Nebraska has added in the modern 85-scholarship era.

Washington is now the 10th Power Five transfer to join the Huskers and the second from the University of Texas. With Washington's addition, Nebraska has now added Power Five transfers from Alabama (2), Texas (2), Arizona State, Florida State, LSU, Oklahoma State, TCU and Texas Tech.

Nebraska-Northwestern football set for 11:30 a.m. kick in Dublin;
Huskers-Oklahoma to be on national stage

The Nebraska football team will kick off the 2022 season just about as early as a team can do it. The Huskers' Week 0 game against Northwestern in Dublin, Ireland, will kick off at 11:30 a.m. Central time on Aug. 27 and be televised nationally by FOX. The game will be a 5:30 p.m. kick in Dublin.

The Huskers learned kickoff times for seven of their games Thursday as the Big Ten's television partners released their schedules. Nebraska's Sept. 17 home game against Oklahoma will also get the national spotlight as part of FOX's Big Noon kickoff. That game will kick at 11 a.m., with FOX's Big Noon Kickoff pregame show coming to Lincoln as part of the day.

Huskers make in-state offer to athlete Kade McIntyre

Nebraska football extended an in-state offer on Thursday afternoon, offering 2023 Archbishop Bergan (Neb.) athlete Kade McIntyre. In his message announcing the offer, McIntyre thanked Nebraska head coach Scott Frost and inside linebackers coach Barrett Ruud. “I’d like to announce that I have received an offer from Nebraska!!! Thank you!!!” he wrote.

The 6-foot-4, 200-pound McIntyre has seen has recruitment take off this spring, picking up offers from Iowa, Kansas State, Minnesota, Wyoming and Tennessee. McIntyre plays wide receiver at Bergan, but most programs see his length and athleticism fitting in best on defense.

100th Season for Memorial Stadium
It was built in honor of Nebraska's World War I dead, including football’s Roscoe ‘Dusty’ Rhodes

This will be the 100th season of Nebraska football in Memorial Stadium. To mark the occasion, we will be recapping some of the more memorable games there. (There are 581 to choose from: 426 wins, 142 losses and 13 ties.) We'll also run down a slew of stadium milestones and records. But first, let's look at how the stadium came to be, a fitting endeavor on Memorial Day weekend.

Cornhusker end Roscoe "Dusty" Rhodes was Nebraska's captain-elect when he joined the Army in April 1918. The United States had just entered World War I, and his division was soon sent overseas. On Nov. 27 - the day before the Huskers' highly anticipated Thanksgiving Day game against Notre Dame - word was received that Sgt. Rhodes had been killed in action in France on Oct. 25.

Rhodes' sacrifice resonated on campus. With fervor rising for improved athletic facilities, the N Club proposed in 1919 that a gymnasium or playing field be named in his memory. The following year, a massive gymnasium-stadium project was proposed. Called the Nebraska Soldiers and Sailors Memorial, it would honor all 751 of the state's war dead, not just Rhodes. Fundraising fell far short, however, and the project never got beyond the planning stages.

Trio of priority in-state 2023 prospects begin busy June with Nebraska official visits

Among a major contingent of Nebraska football official visitors this weekend will be a trio of uncommitted in-state prospects who have already seen just about everything.

Lincoln East athlete Malachi Coleman, Elkhorn South edge rusher Maverick Noonan and Scottsbluff offensive lineman Brock Knutson are no strangers to the Huskers. The 2023 recruits have been to spring games, fall games and practices. They grew up in Big Red families. The lanyards they will wear on campus as guests won’t be necessary for any NU staffers to recognize them.

Nebraska's big recruiting weekend kicks off with pledge from 2023 WR Jaidyn Doss

The Nebraska football program's massive recruiting weekend started off on the right note Friday evening. Jaidyn Doss, a three-star wide receiver from the Kansas City area, announced his commitment to the Huskers less than an hour before Nebraska hosted its first Friday Night Lights camp of the summer at Memorial Stadium.

The 6-foot, 190-pounder took an unofficial visit to Lincoln in March, and returned for an official visit late last month. Doss, who attends Raymore-Peculiar (Mo.) High School, caught 28 passes for 442 yards and five touchdowns last season, and in 24 career games, has 74 catches for 1,418 yards and 12 scores.

Missouri WR Jaidyn Doss commits to Nebraska

Peculiar (Mo.) Raymore-Peculiar receiver Jaidyn Doss announced his commitment to Nebraska early Friday evening. He becomes commit No. 6 for head coach Scott Frost and the Huskers in the 2023 recruiting cycle. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Doss took his official to Nebraska in May and also had offers from the likes of Kansas State, Iowa State, Colorado, Michigan, Michigan State, Missouri, Illinois, Minnesota, Oregon and TCU. “It just felt like home,” Doss told 247Sports. “I felt I could really relate to Coach (Mickey) Joseph. And I love the style and plan they have for me. Coach (Bill) Busch who recruited me made me feel really wanted.” The Top247 tabs Doss as the nation’s No. 46 receiver and No. 11 overall prospect in Missouri. 2023 in-state offensive lineman Brock Knutson commits to Nebraska

Nebraska's huge official visits weekend has already paid off: Class of 2023 offensive lineman Brock Knutson has committed to the Huskers. Knutson's decision comes less than 24 hours after taking an official visit to Lincoln over the weekend and less than two months after the Huskers initially offered him on April 9.

Knutson is a three-star in-state prospect from Scottsbluff (Neb.) High School. He chose the Huskers over nine other offers, including Iowa State, Kansas and Kansas State. He is the Huskers' seventh overall commitment in the 2023 cycle and the third offensive line commit. He joins fellow in-state offensive line commits Gunnar Gottula, an offensive tackle out of Lincoln Southeast, and Sam Sledge, an offensive guard out of Creighton Prep (Omaha).

Huskers Land Texas Defensive Lineman Riley Van Poppel

Van Poppel (6-4, 270) was at Nebraska for an official visit over this past weekend. He didn’t do interviews after that visit but all indications were that he came away very impressed by his second trip to Nebraska. His first trip to Lincoln came during the spring. Van Poppel came away from that trip impressed by defensive front coach Mike Dawson.

“I’ve talked to him on the phone, text and all that stuff but getting to see him actually coach was eye opening to me,” Van Poppel said at the time. “I got to sit in a meeting with him, watch how he goes through meetings. I got to stand on the field. I got to watch how he coaches in live action so I loved seeing that.”

The defender is the eighth commitment of the 2023 recruiting class for Nebraska. He’s only the second defensive player joining Florida defensive back Dwight Bootle.

Huskers Add Colorado Linebacker Hayden Moore to 2023 Recruiting Class

The Huskers have gone back into Colorado for a recruit. Inside linebacker Hayden Moore announced his commitment to the program on Tuesday. He made his decision public on Twitter. Moore (6-3, 210) was part of the June 17 official visit weekend. The Huskers moved quickly to get him on campus for his official visit as he saw his recruitment take off in recent weeks. Moore was impressed by what he saw with during that trip.

“Overall, I had a great time meeting all the players and kind of getting their perspective on everything,” Moore said. “I was really getting to know the coaches better? It was a great experience for sure.” Moore has been a standout defender for his high school in his career. He racked up 111 tackles, 11 tackles for loss and five sacks as a junior. Football isn’t his only sport. He also stars on the baseball diamond and did speak with coach Scott Frost about giving both a shot in college.

Nebraska adds Northern Iowa to 2024 football schedule

A copy of the football game contract with the University of Nebraska was obtained from the University of Northern Iowa via a state public records request. Nebraska will host Northern Iowa at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Neb., on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2024, which will mark the first-ever meeting between the two schools on the gridiron. The Cornhuskers will pay the Panthers a $600,000 guarantee for playing the contest, according to the copy of the contract. Northern Iowa is currently a member of the Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). The Panthers have won 33 conference titles in their history, most recently in 2011 after finishing 7-1 in MVFC play (10-3 overall). With the addition of Northern Iowa, Nebraska has tentatively completed their non-conference schedule for the 2024 season. The Cornhuskers are scheduled to open the season at home against the UTEP Miners on Aug. 31 and will also host the Colorado Buffaloes on Sept. 7. Northern Iowa now has three opponent for its 2024 non-conference slate and can add a fourth. The Panthers’ road game at Nebraska will be sandwiched pair of road contests at the St. Thomas Tommies on Sept. 7 and at the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors on Sept. 21.

Maverick Noonan talks commitment to Nebraska

2023 Elkhorn South outside linebacker Maverick Noonan became the latest in-state prospect to jump into Nebraska’s 2023 recruiting class on Friday evening, committing to the Huskers over offers from a host of suitors, including Stanford, Iowa and others. “I just felt like they were the best for my family, the best choice for me in both football and academics and I felt like I could see myself going there for the next four years. Nebraska was pretty much my top for the longest time now,” Noonan said Friday. “I wanted to take those other visits to Stanford and Iowa just to confirm or just look around and see what else was out there before I made my decision. I wanted to check every box and go through the process very thoroughly.” Noonan said he committed to Nebraska on Friday afternoon with his family and a number of coaches in the room. Noonan was coming off an official visit to Stanford over the weekend.

Barry Jackson has known with a great deal of certainty where he wanted to be for nearly a month, and now the decision is officially in: The Class of 2023 receiver has committed to Nebraska. “It feels good [to be committed]. Nebraska lands commitment from four-star wide receiver Omarion Miller

Nebraska landed a commitment on Tuesday from wide receiver Omarion Miller, one of the team’s top targets on offense. The addition of Miller gives Nebraska three wide receivers in the 2023 class and Miller becomes the highest ranked player to join the Huskers. Miller was previously committed to LSU, but opened things up ahead of an official visit to Lincoln at the beginning of June. The connection to Miller for Nebraska stems from Mickey Joseph, who helped get the receiver committed to LSU, and now again with the Huskers after changing jobs in December.

Texas ILB Dylan Rogers commits to Nebraska

Nebraska hauled in its fourth defensive commitment in the past two weeks on Tuesday, landing inside linebacker Dylan Rogers from Cypress (Texas) Cy Woods. The three-star recruit had recently named a top-six list of finalists that consisted of NU, Texas, Colorado, Kansas State, Missouri, and Houston. Rogers joined the Huskers’ recruiting class shortly after taking an official visit to Lincoln last month. Between visiting Nebraska and committing to the Huskers, he also took an unofficial visit to Texas.

Rogers becomes the 13th known commitment in Nebraska’s 2023 class and the fifth defensive recruit with Dwight Bootle, Van Poppel, Hayden Moore and Maverick Noonan. He is also the second defensive recruit from the state of Texas, joining Riley Van Poppel from Argyle. The Huskers see Rogers playing the MIKE/WILL position in their defense. Rogers measured in at 6-foot-3 and 232 pounds while on his official visit to NU. Nebraska sees Rogers and Moore both playing the inside linebacker positions.

Recruiting analyst: Nebraska football's aggressive 'new approach' is working

Chalk it up to COVID. Or perhaps chalk to a coaching staff unsure how long it’d be around Memorial Stadium. At this time last year, Nebraska football had half the commits for 2022 recruiting class as it does now for the 2023 cycle. The 2023 class — and 2023 coaching staff — holds a touchdown lead. Recruiting analysts have taken notice.

“Last year they fell off a little — going from top 25 classes to No. 41 with us last year, and that’s not exactly what you’re looking for in a year that could determine a lot,” said Rivals National Recruiting Analyst Clint Cosgrove. “It all starts with the players, and this new approach — and the guys they’ve hired to go out and get after it on the road — is definitely paying dividends. There’s a noticeable difference.”

The approach, Cosgrove said, is fueled by new assistant coaches like Mickey Joseph and Bill Busch, and new senior director of player personnel Vince Guinta, who was once roommates with Cosgrove — the son of former Husker defensive coordinator Kevin Cosgrove — at Nebraska. Guinta overhauled Nebraska’s recruiting operation, helped put together a robust official visit schedule in May and June, and generally organized visits in a way that one parent, who’d seen the before and after versions, applauded.

Nebraska dips into Louisiana once again for four-star DE Ashley Williams

Zachary (La.) four-star defensive end Ashley Williams Jr. announced his commitment on Sunday afternoon to Nebraska as the Cornhuskers fought off stiff competition as his recruitment went on to land his pledge. For Williams, it was an easy decision to ride with the coaching staff that put the most effort into his recruitment as associate head coach and area recruiter Mickey Joseph, outside linebackers coach Mike Dawson and defensive coordinator Erik Chinander. "It's really the relationships with Coach Mickey and Coach Dawson and Coach Chinander," Williams said. "It's really family over there."

At 6-foot-6, 220 pounds, Williams is the No. 250 ranked recruit in the country for the class of 2023, according to Rivals. He is the No. 17 ranked recruit from the state of Louisiana and the No. 19 ranked weakside defensive end in the country. Williams' pledge is Nebraska's 14th in the 2023 class and the second from the state of Louisiana. He is the third four-star in the class joining Lincoln native Gunnar Gottula and fellow Louisianan Omarion Miller.

Nebraska Football Hall of Fame Announces 2022 Class

Six Nebraska standouts and two state college representatives comprise the 2022 class of the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame announced on Monday. The 2022 inductees were chosen by the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame, which is sponsored by the Nebraska Chapter of the National Football Foundation and the College Football Hall of Fame. The 2022 Hall of Fame class will be officially inducted at a Sept. 9 banquet in Lincoln and recognized the following day at the Huskers' home game against Georgia Southern. Four former Huskers were selected to the 2022 class by balloting of the Hall of Fame membership, including defensive back Ric Lindquist (1980s), cornerback Bruce Pickens (1990s), offensive guard Toniu Fonoti (2000-06) and cornerback Prince Amukamara (2007-12). The Nebraska Football Hall of Fame also selected a pair of former Huskers from the Legends category including offensive tackle Ron McDole and linebacker Lee Kunz.

Nebraska running back Markese Stepp enters transfer portal

Nebraska running back Markese Stepp has entered the transfer portal, a source confirmed to Husker247 on Tuesday. Stepp, who began his college career at USC, appeared in seven games, making two starts last season for the Huskers. Stepp rushed for 177 yards and two touchdowns on 45 carries, with his best game coming against Fordham, where Stepp carried 18 times for 101 yards in the Husker win. Prior to transferring to Nebraska, Stepp spent three seasons at USC where he battled injuries. As a freshman, Stepp played in four games, preserving his redshirt. As a redshirt freshman in 2019, Stepp rushed for 307 yards on 48 carries and scored three touchdowns before missing significant time with injury. The following season, Stepp played in five of USC's six games rushing 45 times for 165 yards and three touchdowns, while adding three receptions. He then opted to transfer, citing a desire to play in a new offensive system that more heavily featured running.

I'm impressed with this guy, love hearing him talk , no nonsense personality and excellent communicator . He doesn't seem to be afraid of the media but welcomes their questions. I've often gotten the impression that Frost hasn't mastered his relationship with the media but just tolerates them because he knows it's part of his job. Also probably just winning would make Frost job with the media more pleasant. Winning makes everything easier. I think 6 wins should be an absolute minimum this year, the schedule lends itself an opportunity for 6 or 7 wins. 5 or fewer wins I would dump Frost, 5 losing seasons in a row is enough time to give someone.

Frost has been the worst coach I have seen at Nebraska. Both Pelini and Riley were better coaches in my opinion. This is like his last chance to show us what he's got. And the question is can Mr Whipple and Mickey save him.

I'm impressed with this guy, love hearing him talk , no nonsense personality and excellent communicator . He doesn't seem to be afraid of the media but welcomes their questions. I've often gotten the impression that Frost hasn't mastered his relationship with the media but just tolerates them because he knows it's part of his job. Also probably just winning would make Frost job with the media more pleasant. Winning makes everything easier. Riley hands down to me was the worst. For having so much head coaching experience he was clueless.

Frost was hampered by too much early success at UCF. He clearly needed more time as a head coach or to be good enough to start at a smaller less visible power 5 team before coming to NU. It's a not a school where you come to learn the ropes as a head coach. This is a pivotal year for him.

Riley isn't as bad as he appears, I know he looks and acts more like a high school English teacher than a D1 football coach. But the guys got a winning record including 9 winning seasons as a D1 Power Five head coach. Agree, his last year at Nebraska was a disaster, but as of right now he's a more impressive coach than Frost in my opinion. I think Nebraska fired Solich, Callahan and Riley too quickly. And now we are paying the price and stuck with a coach who has 4 losing seasons in a row, because everyone knows Nebraska canned its other coaches to fast. The fact that Frost is a NU Alum also is allowing him some extra time to fix the ship. But if he underachieves again this year then it should be time to say goodbye to O'l Frosty . Frost in my opinion is an unproven head coach except for one very successful season at a non Power Five school when he won 13 games . 2022 is a critical year for Frost as NU's head coach and everyone knows it. He has a favorable schedule and it's time to show everyone what he's done this off season to fix this sputtering underachieving program.

As the days til week 0 start winding down, I get increasingly more interested in the Huskers. I think last year - although the worst record in how long? - was a step in the right direction. Yes, they lost 9 games, but they at least had a good chance in all of them... They didn't get blown out. Bottom line though is this is Frost's last year to do "it". What "it" is will vary from person to person. I think the benchmark is 6-6. I don't require a winning season, I just require a not-losing season, and having the boys show the same fight in their losses as they did last year. If he can't get that, then goodbye.
