Some unaccounted for loud noises.

I guess in this day and age you can never be too careful.

New honorary commander program starting at Offutt AFB

OFFUTT AIR FORCE BASE, Nebr. — The 55th Wing is starting a new honorary commander program to help grow the already strong bond between local civic leaders and Offutt Air Force Base. The Team Offutt Honorary Commander program’s goal will be to engage, educate and empower local leaders to serve as proponents of the Airmen and many missions across the installation.

While the new program will be led by the 55th Wing, it will include multiple units from across the base. “We have more than 50 mission partners on this installation, all with a unique role to play in our nation’s defense,” Howard said. “We certainly want to ensure the members of this new program grasp that Offutt is more than just the 55th Wing.” Those who are selected for the new program will be assigned to a specific unit on base and participate in their activities on a routine basis. They will serve two-to-three-year terms, typically following the command tour of their specific unit.

What a strange story, a total lack of common sense, now his life is most likely ruined. It made national news.

Heartland Flood:
Offutt breaks ground on two replacement facilities after 2019 disaster

BELLEVUE, Neb. (WOWT) - It’s time to begin work at Offutt Air Force Base. Crews are constructing two campuses. The first is a $150 million Nuclear Command, Control and Communications campus. “Very important facility—one that was destroyed during the flood several years ago,” said the Air Force Civil Engineer Center’s Natural Disaster Recovery Division Chief Col. Robert Bartlow. “So we’re very excited to get this project underway.”

Offutt Air Force Base celebrates 100th anniversary of Offutt Field Friday

BELLEVUE, Neb. — Offutt Air Force Base celebrated a big milestone on Friday. The 55th Wing conducted a ceremony commemorating 100 years of Offutt Field. The ceremony included a military flyover and airmen placing items in a time capsule. In February 1924, the Fort Crook Landing Field was named in honor of First Lieutenant Jarvis Offutt, Omaha's first World War I air casualty. He was killed in 1918, flying with the Royal Air Force in France.

FYI...

The person Offutt Air Force Base is named for, Lt. Jarvis Offutt, is buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park:

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/317 ... ess-offutt

I had always thought he was buried on the base (there is a small cemetery on-base), but nope. He's in North Omaha at Forest Lawn.

Did anybody else just hear what I'd presume was some sort of military aircraft come in about 30 minutes ago, and just left a few minutes ago? I'm inside and was unable to see it. I usually wouldnt notice anything like that, but this sucker was LOUD. I could hear it for about 3 minutes coming in and going out. What with all going on in the middle east, it kinda makes me wonder if it was something you don't see every day.

According to FlightRadar24, a WC-135R Constant Phoenix took off around that timeframe.

Well, that certainly would make sense, as according to Wikipedia, there's only three in service.

Also read-"Its mission is to collect samples from the atmosphere for the purpose of detecting and identifying nuclear explosions."

That's kinda... troubling :?

They fly regularly to collect clean samples to use as a baseline.

Well, my rational mind figured that, but with everything going on, the other half of my brain went there after I read that.

Looks like that is potentially one you usually can see flying around the metro (maybe), I'm just not versed in that category much. But I had never heard it in this part of town, nor have I heard it for such a prolonged period of time, and so prominently. It just didn't seem like a usual movement. I'd be interested in learning more if you or anybody have knowledge of any of the things I'm unclear of.

There were a couple of what I believe were F-35s flew over my office near the 80/680 split about 2 hours ago or so.

I saw a B2 fly over my house a couple weeks ago at a fairly low altitude considering, not sure if anyone else noticed it.

That's a very interesting app. I played around with it for a little bit because it was just grinding my gears not knowing...

I THINK (think), now keep in mind I only know a little about classifications or operations of military aircraft, but I know some. But I think I came to somewhat of a conclusion based on the time stamps and a couple that stood out.

1) A T38 from Sioux Falls peeled east north of Missouri Valley at about 10:19, went east toward Des Moines, turned back our way and passed over the south end of the metro around 10:45. The times check out almost perfectly. Though I've heard fighter jets plenty of times, I wouldn't think it would be that loud that far away, but what do I know. That brought up a memory of when that one fighter jet did a sonic boom over the metro that scared the |expletive| out of everybody.

2) A KC-135 from Sioux City flew just east of the river around 10:28. I feel like maybe that could have been it, though the time doesn't feel right. Interestingly, It flew to right near Whiteman AFB, where the B2 bombers that just carried out that mission are stationed, and flew a bunch of circles there, then headed back the same way. I think I may have heard it pass by again just after noon.

3) Your suggestion, an RC-135 took off from Offutt at pretty much exactly the time I heard something at around 10:43 or so. But it didn't pass over me, only its exhaust would have been pointed in my direction, but only briefly.

I guess I'll never really know, but I'm leaning toward that T38. Anywho, that website is a lot of fun, so thanks for introducing me to it. I could waste a lot of time with it lol.

And one final thing, I'm really, really surprised they release that info for military options, so a schmo like me can see what they're doing. As for what I heard today, I could imagine that for some operations, they don't share that info. I mean, some of this stuff could be really, really sensitive, so I wouldn't be surprised if what I heard today was just something that isn't going to be shared in that manner. Oh well, I'll never know. Just wish I could have seen it with my own eyes.

Probably the one from the CWS opening ceremonies.

Thanks, That would line up with the times I heard, and would also sum up the loudness of it.

It just wasn't a usual sound I hear on a regular basis, so with the recent operations, it kinda got my mind wandering. Especially now, if they were F-35's or even F-22's, they were involved with the B-2's in the recent operation. Then to hear about the "Nuke Sniffer", and seeing that KC-135 flying around Whiteman AFB where the B-2's are.. Kinda set me a little on edge, Makes me wonder if they're gearing up for something a little different. Anyway, I hope not.

I think that probably explains it. What they were doing, I don't know. But that soothes my inquiring mind. I always hate it when I can hear something that sounds cool, but can't identify it.

That's cool. Agree with the operation or not, its cool to see one was just here, and it may have been one to pull off the strike. Good to know they're not just for show.

Keep in mind that not all flights will show on flight radar 24, especially military aircraft. They have to have their transponders on and they don't always. The F-35s for example didn't show up.

I've had fighter jets fly over a couple different times today. I'm in Old mill and they were heading towards Offutt both times. First time there was 3, second time there was 2.

Is that what that was? They flew right over my house and it was so loud I almost thought a plane was about to come crashing down into my house. I heard it again but not as loud about 10 minutes later.

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I love it! As a kid in Lincoln I used to burst outside whenever I'd hear the F-16s and Phantom II fighters fly over; not much has changed in terms of my enthusiasm.

I like them too. I just wish I was outside with my camera and not sitting at my desk at work...

I wonder if they did a flyover at the B1G baseball?
