Are you saying that the harder I labor, the less green I become? Holy |expletive|!! I'm going to park it on the couch and save the earth!

First off the title of this thread should be changed to "Drilling for oil" and should have nothing to do with gas prices. You should know that drilling for oil domestically will not change gas prices in the slightest. Not now, not 10 years from now.
Better yet, become a caveman and unplug the electricity from your house!
Yeah its called conservation. Turn off lights, unplug appliances, switch off TVs/computers when you're not using them. Its pretty much common sense.

Oil is fare more infinite than the alternatives. In fact, oil is renewable. See http://www.ls9.com/technology/
On a VERY small scale. Remember the United States daily oil demand is around 22 million barrels. Making a test tube of oil in a lab is not going to make a dent in this demand. The technology to use this on a large scale is a long way off, and will probably not be feasible or efficient.
If drilling for oil is not the answer what is? Alternative energy is not cost efficient or effective.
Not sure where your logic is on this one. I would much rather pay the upfront cost to build alternative energies (wind, solar, geothermal, hydroelectric) and their relatively small upkeep costs than continue paying for oil, either importing or drilling right here. And continue having to pay for it, wind doesn't run out, oil does, so drilling will constantly have to be on the move.
The alternative energies often end up being far more dirty because they are labor intensive.
Labor intensive = dirty? Building a windmill does not even compare to building an oil platform and then BURNING that oil for fuel. In my mind, labor intensive is good. More labor = more jobs = better economy.
That's a bunch of huff and puff propaganda.
And what do you think the information you are presenting is? Propaganda works on both sides. Its an effective means of gathering support behind a movement, either to drill or not to drill. You are guilty of what you are condemning.

Also I would take a look at how much offshore drilling is a danger, especially with hurricanes. Here is an article about the oil spills related to hurricane Katrina. http://blog.skytruth.org/2007/12/hurric ... o-oil.html

I guess we all have different definitions of common sense.

I'd rather see the "American" way of life change a lot more than DRILL DRILL DRILL.

More public transportation, smaller, more efficient cars. Electric vehicles. heck, I drive a scooter to work/pleasure everywhere I can.

There is NO NEED for 99% of people to own a giant SUV or a truck, except for a very small amount of people.

.
This is false. Within 18 months, new oil can be brought to market if we drilled now.

In regards to labor intensive, here is what I mean. You may as well get rid of your gas mower and get a push mower, get rid of your snowblower and use a snow shovel. Wind power is still a tinker toy.

I've always told people not to wave the "Save the Earth" banner.

Earth will be fine. There just won't be any of us around to see it.

Man doesn't have a real great track record picking fights with nature. Man has a much better record while playing God than we do fighting nature.

It just drives me nuts that Bush and other republicans are so obsessed with drilling in America and expanding refining capacity. That fails to solve anything in the short term and neglects America's long term future. This is a great time to start catching our technology up to where it should have been years ago. I just wish I was smart enough to invent something.
Actually, drilling would drop the price very quickly. What is driving it up, is the lack of resources aimed at getting more oil.

It's a fact that drilling for oil attracts bears. Where ever there are oil drilling rigs, millions of bears are sure to follow. They can smell the octane and they like to eat it! They will swim across the ocean if they have to. They also like to eat people! More Americans were killed in 2001 by vicsious bear attacks than by the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and asbestos inhalation combined! Its a fact! Don't bother looking it up or ask to me to cite my information, just believe me! Most bears are also carriers of rabies, AIDs, and Parkinson's Disease. I have pity on your family that you support such an effort that could leave them rabid or Parkinsond. Pity.

thenewguy wrote:what i don't understand is how this can go on? If there is any other issue that deals with monopolies or large corporations gouging the general population (like now), the government steps in to help control the situation. But not now. They say they are doing 'investigations' to figure out why the oil companies are making record profits, but it's not enough. I cannot understand, at all, how the price can jump like this when there is no national crisis (i.e. what they said when Katrina hit and wiped out refineries in Louisiana), no terrorist attack (like when gas jumped after 9/11), no shortage (OPEC said that production is steady, and there is in fact, no shortage), so what gives? When Rockefeller started Standard Oil Company back in the late 19TH century, it was broken up in 1911 because of 'monopolistic practices'. I understand that the United States Government doesn't have the authority to do anything like that with a non-American entity that resides over seas, but why couldn't we put tariffs on goods exported to that region to see if they'd lower the costs a bit? Why not have real talks with them and go to bat for the American people? To me, it seems like a bunch of b.s. and a way to kiss the public's collective |expletive|, while actually doing nothing at all (so that those with their hands in the oil cookie jar are not affected).
Its not about price gouging or monopolies, unless you want to talk about government owned entities in foreign countries. Here is why the oil and gas prices keep going up. We refuse to compete in oil production. This means China is will to invest in Sudan to get oil and is willing to pay a premium price and will ignore what is happen in the Darfur province of Sudan.

It means Europe has to buy oil from Russia, Venezuela and Iran. None of these countries can buy from us because we are not making much of an effort to product oil. In fact, we are hording it by not drilling in ANWR and drilling off shore. To put it bluntly, we have a worldwide sanctions against are own oil, therefore we are at the mercy of what the rest of the world is willing to pay for oil. Now if we produced more of our own, the price would come down and all those nasty other countries would have less to say about what they charge for oil.

^Hillarious.

Seriously though, this mentality of drilling is the answer is just wrong and losing ground quickly. With such a sudden spike in oil prices just prove how dependent we are on the stuff and shows how quickly it can effect our lives in every way.

Wind, Soil, Bio, Geothermal, etc are way more renewable than oil. And with recent breakthroughs in renewable energy technologies it is becoming more cost effective as well. If the United States suddenly subsidizes windpower, for example, on a massive scale wouldn't that lower the cost efficiency on scales of economy alone.

I'm all for the PICKENS PLAN, but also believe we do need to "some" drilling here in the states. Petro products are used in almost everything in the world. We need a comprehensive plan....including conservation and efficiency.

Of course he also said speculators weren't running about the cost of oil -- although a just a part of why oil has been climbing -- maybe a part that has been overlooked.
A surprisingly small group of investors and oil traders control the vast majority of the world’s oil contracts, and they are exerting tremendous influence over the market, reports the Washington Post. Regulators have found that a few financial firms speculating for themselves or their clients hold 81% of the oil contracts on NYMEX—a far bigger share than had been previously reported. A single Swiss firm was found to hold as much as 11% of the contracts in July.

PICKENS PLAN??? Is that what they are calling it now? The same man who owns prime property and equipment for windmills, but is just waiting for the US government to build all his transmission lines so he can make a killing (kind of like the immediate family of a certain politician hopeful challenging for a certain Omaha House seat)?

I support wind energy, but don't think for a second this guy is spending $60 million if he does not have a plan to make it all back and then some.

-I tell you what I do KNOW. This year has been the coolest in at least 5 years. The Arctic ice cap is bigger than it has been in a long time. If the worldwide temp. fluctuates by a tenth of a degree either way, you can say "See. I TOLD you." Thus, you need to get the updated talking points and quit calling it global warming.

Arctic ice cap still at risk: NASA

Mar 18, 2008

WASHINGTON (AFP) — The polar ice cap over the Arctic Ocean was slightly bigger last month than in February of last year due to a harsher winter, but the ice sheet is still shrinking overall, NASA said Tuesday.
"The area of perennial ice decreased," he said in his report of measurements of the polar ice caps taken by NASA's ICESat satellite.

The polar ice cap consists of seasonal ice that expands and shrinks with winter and summer, and perennial ice that never melts.

Meier said perennial ice was "an indicator of the long-term health of the ice," adding that "it's not looking very good."

damn we went a long ways from gas prices....

by the way did gas drop 20 cents per gallon today -- two days after the largest drop in oil prices in 17 years.

The ice caps have been stable this past year because of La Nina. Our so called COLD winter was actually normal in the US and world wide.

I called it 4 months ago that gas prices would start falling closer to election time just like it did in 2004.

Interesting video freedom fighter. In my post I did mention I'm for "some" oil drilling in the states (including offshore).

Joeglow, you bring up good point that I hadn't thought of before; his profiting from this. I thought he was to trying leave a legacy behind (he is 80 yrs old). Honestly I don't care if he's using this to get richer, I do care about his message and ideas though.

Yeah, who would have guessed it... the billionaire is in it for the money. Ya think? As if the oil companies are only in it to fund their humanitarian efforts.

If we reduce our dependency on oil (domestic and foreign) and get wind energy started as a legit secondary source of energy and Pickens makes a bunch of money, what's the problem? Sounds like win/win/win to me.

So after 4 days gas, I noticed on my way to work that gas had finally dropped 10 cents after jumping up 20 cents over night. On the way home 10 hours later i see the price has jumped back up 10 cents -- so I checked the news --- Oil went up a whole $1.88 a barrel because of FEAR that Hurrican Gustav MIGHT do something.

sounds like FEAR Speculating to me.

I know panic buying isn't going to help the situation, but it would probably be wise to top off your tanks today or tomorrow as it looks like this sucker is heading right into the Gulf.

http://money.cnn.com/2008/08/28/news/ec ... /index.htm

Experts say that oil infrastructure is much better prepared to withstand a big hurricane than it was in 2005 when Rita and Katrina wreaked havoc in the Gulf.
CNN.com wrote:With Tropical Storm Gustav setting its sights on the Gulf of Mexico, oil facilities in the region are facing their first major threat since 2005, when Hurricanes Rita and Katrina knocked out nearly every barrel of oil production and sent prices soaring to then-record levels.

But this time around, if Gustav intensifies and heads into the Gulf as expected, experts say reinforcements have made production far less vulnerable than it was three years ago.

Drilling rigs and production platforms moored to sea floor in the Gulf had been attached with eight lines, and are now required to be moored with 12 to 16 lines.

New rigs were built higher above the water, and old rigs were strengthened, according to Andy Radford, a policy advisor at the American Petroleum Institute.

And pipelines, which carry most of the oil and gas from the production platforms to the shore, now have to be buried deeper beneath the sea floor, said Barbara Shook, a Houston-based analyst with the Energy Intelligence Group.

"The industry is probably in the best shape it's ever been in because of what they've learned over the last few years," said Shook.
However, don't expect this to affect the price of oil or the price at the pump. That will continue to fluctuate indiscriminately for no |expletive| reason whatsoever.

Oil prices tumbled to $111 a barrel Monday as Hurricane Gustav weakened along the Gulf Coast and posed less of a threat to oil drilling and refining operations. A stronger dollar also helped send oil lower after crude gained nearly $3 to trade above $118 a barrel in anticipation of Gustav's hitting Louisiana.
OK - how long before gas drops from $3.59 back to $3.44?

It may be a while, when prices fall is when retailers make their cash grab, they won't lower it until their competitors start lowering theirs.

But but but but but I thought the only thing that affected the price of gasoline was the free market, ie supply and demand and the cost of raw materials. And since the demand for oil didn't change since last night but the cost of oil dropped 6%, the price of gasoline should drop 6%, too, right? I mean, that's what I've been told.

Or are you telling me there may be other factors involved and that the people that told me the free market dictates the price of oil and gas might not be 100% correct?

The price of oil just dropped (to $105 per barrel). Another 'day after Labor Day' miracle.
