A bought a copy of NCAA Football 2010 for my X-Box a little while ago and "Omaha! Omaha!" is one of the things the QB yells out when you call an audible.

So I am in a small grape farming town in northern California. We are at a bar and the bartender was "throwing the bones" yelling Omaha. We asked him what he was doing and that was the "audibly" for his regular customers to ditch the chick they were hitting on...

this may belong in any number of sports threads, but today on ESPN Radio, Freddy Coleman was asking listeners to call in with the one sports venue they would most have liked to attend a game at. He said his own top choice is "Rosenblatt Stadium". Didn't say it was in Omaha or Nebraska or anything like that. He said it with conviction, like he expected everybody to know where it is, already.
Later, he interviewed the South Carolina coach and asked him his thoughts about playing in the last college world series in the stadium. The coach replied that they talked about the history of "Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium" every day of the series and after they won, they made it a point to scoop up some infield dirt.

I'm actually kind of tired of hearing outsiders talk of Buffett being the only driver behind Omaha's success. It's not as if our other 4 Fortune 500 companies came here after a Berkshire shareholder meeting or something... and the shareholder meeting itself actually contributes about as much to the local economy as any rather paltry local employment which Berkshire adds (certainly, outside of NFM). It would be nice if Warren would occasionally 'grant us' one of his acquisitions headquarters... now that would have an impact on the local economy.

Yeah, Ole Warren doesn't exactly go out of his way to shop locally.

Even so, Omaha does have a rather diverse business community. The medical community/industry probably has FAR more to do with Omaha's income base than anything Buffett does.

Flying to Frankfurt a week or so ago, I saw a 2 page Omaha ad extolling the virtues for businesses in United Airlines' Hemisphere's in-flight mag this month. It's by the "Greater Omaha Economic Development Partnership", which I've never heard of before. http://www.selectgreateromaha.com/index.aspx

One of my BIGGEST pet peeves is when people see an article they don't like, and rather than discuss the merits, you get "OMFG Faux News is teh hackery" or "MSNBC is a leftist tool."

People will just illegally import TP from Iowa or Gretna or somewhere, just adding to the traffic congestion and road wear and no added wheel tax revenue. Maybe I could bring it in each day on my way to work and sell it on a dark, early morning street corner

Here's a couple I've picked up lately:

*The Big Bang Theory character Penny, who lives across the hall from the two main characters, is said to be from Nebraska. In a recent episode when someone hacked Sheldon's World of Warcraft account, they all went to confront the guy and Penny proclaimed she would show the thief "how we do things in Nebraska" and kicked him in the balls.

*The instruction manual for SimCity 4 Deluxe suggests building sea ports to increase industry but qualifies that you could skip them if your city is located in Nebraska.

*A recent episode of Criminal Minds had the team traveling to Omaha to track down a troublesome kid who was taken to "North Omaha Medical Center" as a part of the former age limit-less Safe Haven program but then tried to escape back to his home in Newton, IA by hitchhiking and killing his drivers.
