Most likely because this area is going to be one of the new entertainment districts where you can legally carry your drink outside from one establishment to the other.

Looking at the webcam, looks like they started installing rebar for the supporting columns on the first floor today. It is as tall as the elevator shaft is currently.

Steel going up on the west end!!! Plus, a lattice crane boom visible on The Yard site a few blocks back.

Yes, but it is really reserved for the feats of strength. They have the Andre the Giant award for anyone who can consume over 100 beers during Festivus.

So they poured the floor for the capital side today, the pillars for the hotel side and elevator shaft are already cured. Not seeing much at all on the apartment though...

You can see it on the construction cam....there is steel going up on the apt side.

Just drove by the apartment side of this development down 12th st. and was amazed at how fast the steel was rising. The crane was dropping two beams per lift. I also took the opportunity to drive around the rest of downtown and midtown, and while I know of all the developments from this great forum, until you actually get out there and physically see them, you really can't grasp just how much is going up right now. Awesome development in the downtown/midtown core!

First place I went after I got my brakes fixed, after a stop at Benson's Localmotive...

Now if I can get my laptop's electric plug to work (charge up my laptop) I can use my camera's photos again... These were cell phone pics.

That is weird, in the latest images from the construction cam, the form for the elevator shaft has been removed. If you back to this morning you can see it there, but now it is gone.

I was thinking the same but in the second pic you can see all the rebar on the southwest portion of the building. Maybe only the northwest section is steel and they will use concrete on the southwest portion.

They will most likely use steel throughout the entire apartment project. If you check out Coyote's second photo from his March 6 post you can see that the southernmost line of columns has rebar round them. Sometimes engineers will encase structural steel in concrete to increase rigidity of a structure. This technique can be used to provide a more open feeling space by reducing the need of diagonal bracing like K braces. It appears the they will use the same concrete encased column idea on the second line of columns to south of the completed steel structure. It doesn't make sense to change your structural system for half the building. This could result in added engineering and construction costs and issues with differential settling and building cracks.
