I've long thought that a 2pm close on the Nebraska side of the river would cut down on a lot of DUI's crossing the bridges at 1:00 to hit the Iowa bars for one more drink or a six-pack to go. That was pretty common thirty years ago -- I haven't been out that late more recently. <YAWN>

Basically a law that expires in one year. She wanted to extend drinking until 2 but then the council would have had to re pass the ordnance after a year if they wanted to keep it at 2.

Its political BS that governments do all the time to "save face" in front of their constituents. They do it with taxes all the time. Lets tax this for only a year, then next summer when everyone has forgotten about it we will make it permanent.

I noticed that Hy-Vee on 50th in Center has dropped the no booze before noon on Sunday rule. Anyone know if pretty much everywhere has switched over to this yet?

I skimmed across an article recently about Nebraska and Iowa relaxing some sort of alcohol laws, must have been it. Of course, I didn't read the article.

Unless that Hy-Vee isn't in the city limits, they shouldn't be selling alcohol before Noon on Sunday's. Cities, towns, villages and counties have discretion on Sunday as to when to sell. Most prohibit sales before Noon. I think unincorporated areas of Sarpy allow beer, but not hard liquor before Noon. I'm too lazy to look it up though.

Omaha Ordinance:

Sec. 15-2. Closing hours for licensed premises.permanent link to this piece of content

It shall be unlawful for any person on any property licensed to sell alcoholic liquor at retail purposely or knowingly to sell or distribute alcoholic liquor, or to permit any person to do so, during the following periods of time:

(a)
The sale or distribution for consumption off the premises on any day between the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m.; or
(b)
The sale or dispensing for consumption on the premises on any day between the hours of 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m.; or
(c)
On any Sunday the sale or dispensing of alcoholic liquor, other than beer and wine, for consumption on the premises or off the premises, shall be prohibited between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon.
(1)
The hours during which a holder of a special designated permit may sell or distribute alcoholic liquor, other than beer and wine, on Sunday shall be established by the city council at the time the permit application is considered.
(2)
Nonprofit corporations holding a Class C or Class I license under R.R.S. 1943, § 53-124, shall be permitted to sell alcoholic liquor for consumption on the premises between the hours of 12:00 noon on Sunday and 1:00 a.m. on the following Monday, but such nonprofit corporation licensee shall not sell or dispense alcoholic liquor on more than six days each week.

(1) No alcoholic liquor, including beer, shall be sold at retail or dispensed on any day between the hours of 1 a.m. and 6 a.m., except that the local governing body of any city or village with respect to area inside the corporate limits of such city or village, or the county board with respect to area outside the corporate limits of any city or village, may by ordinance or resolution (a) require closing prior to 1 a.m. on any day or (b) if adopted by a vote of at least two-thirds of the members of such local governing body or county board, permit retail sale or dispensing of alcoholic liquor for consumption on the premises, excluding sales for consumption off the premises, later than 1 a.m. and prior to 2 a.m. on any day.

(2) Except as provided for and allowed by ordinance of a local governing body applicable to area inside the corporate limits of a city or village or by resolution of a county board applicable to area inside such county and outside the corporate limits of any city or village, no alcoholic liquor, including beer, shall be sold at retail or dispensed between the hours of 6 a.m. Sunday and 1 a.m. Monday. This subsection shall not apply after 12 noon on Sunday to a licensee which is a nonprofit corporation and the holder of a Class C license or a Class I license.

(3) It shall be unlawful on property licensed to sell alcoholic liquor at retail to allow alcoholic liquor in open containers to remain or be in possession or control of any person for purposes of consumption between the hours of fifteen minutes after the closing hour applicable to the licensed premises and 6 a.m. on any day.

(4) Nothing in this section shall prohibit licensed premises from being open for other business on days and hours during which the sale or dispensing of alcoholic liquor is prohibited by this section.

No, actually the law changed a few months ago with a vote from the city council. Hence, liquor before noon is kosher now.
