Another close loss. At some point these have to start going our way? There's a piece missing to this team, something. So very close to being a good team, but...

Another tough loss for the Jays. They actually have 6 of the next 7 that are winnable, so the season isn't over yet.

Up by 5 with little time left and they blow it.
Another stupid in bound pass gone awry for a basket.
Say goodnight to this season.

This is a mental thing, which is on coaching. The talent is there. They've been close against some top teams in the country consistently, we just start going stupid with 3 minutes left and it's baffling.

Yet another sickening loss. I don’t know anymore Coach Mac.. I just don’t know..

What I did know, is when Mitch Ballock threw a perfect inbound pass to Xavier to tie the game in regulation, I knew the Jays would blow it in overtime :koko: ...

Yeah I think we all thought the same thing....how could they find a way to blow this one too.

I hate it, I really feel like the guys are giving their all as was evidence on the last possession with the tie up, but they just don't have enough talent. I also don't understand why all of the shooters are so reluctant to shoot the ball. Martin is the only one actively looking to shoot the 3. Hopefully the upcoming strong home schedule will give the guys some confidence.

If the talent wasn't there in some capacity, most of the games would look like the Nebraska game or the first Butler game. Instead they've gone toe to toe with some top teams, but |expletive| the bed with poor decisions within the last 3 to 5 minutes. This is a reoccurring pattern with McDermott.

Wowza. Something has to give right? If you hang with teams up until the final 5 minutes, often times winning at that point...then poop it away, that's...I just don't know what it is besides bad coaching and a poor mental state of the players.

Is it DRock they're missing badly?

The fabric of reality is that the coaching is darn good and without that good coaching this season could of been much uglier with the talent level as limited as it is. As long as coach Mac is running a clean operation then it would serve Creighton well to hang on to him for as long as they can.

Creighton employs one of the best sports psychologist in the nation. They are young. They finally realized they had to put (Fr) Zegarowski at One, and put Mintz at Two. Zegarowski breaks his hand. (So) Epperson was doing well at the Five until his back goes out. (Fr) Froling can only play minutes at Five. Krampelj is still gun shy on his knee which took him out last year. (So) Ballock has had Sophmore moments. (So) Ty-Shon has been playing with a bad shoulder. They are fortunate that (Fr) Bishop lost his red shirt because they really needed his contributions. The team is built to play full speed, and really on finding advantageous switches when half court. They struggle a little when they slow it down, but almost beat Nova that way. [snarky]They are young which must be McDermott's fault since he let their best players go pro too early.[/snarky]

While I do hope you're right, and once truly believed it was just a youth problem, we can't just look at this year as a standalone. The mid-late season collapses, the failures in close games (decided by 5 points or less), and to a lesser extent the lack of tourney success even with one of the better players in recent CBB history point to something else, something more systemic.

This year I see flashes of a truly awesome team, but then something happens with 5 minutes left to go that makes me say "where the heck did the other team go?!". It seems to happen every year, but this year is particularly pronounced due to, as you mentioned, the youth. I don't think Jack Stark can fix that in-game bit (even though we all know he's a secret Husker plant to sabotage the Creighton program har har har   ).

Even the injuries that seem to happen every single year around this time are strange, but that happens to every team.

Guess we'll see next year, at least I have some hope that it'll be better since we lose basically no one from this team. I would love to see them salvage this season and make the NIT for the experience.

I agree with you Martin.. We’ve been talking about a lack of mental toughness with this team for more than 3 seasons. There are several variables which have contributed to the Jays “down year”.. as Coyote has made very clear.. But even when this team was having an “up year” talent wise, they’ve wilted in the clutch, especially in the NCAA Tournament..

My opinion is, next season, if the Jays are still making boneheaded mental errors down the stretch in close games, especially at home, it’s time for coach Mac to experience what the “Hot Seat” truly feels like...

Agreed, but it bears saying again that I really, really want to be wrong on this one. I would be happy to eat crow on my reservations against McDermott that I have said here, next year.

I want this team next year to shock the fanbase and be the one to take it to new heights. I truly believe, and who knows I am probably wrong here too, that they have the talent across the board to do so. I just am very jaded by the history of what has been accomplished or lack there of over the past 5 years.

They had a great win last night against a Depaul team that is far more talented than they have had in recent memory, so that should be celebrated. Let's see if they can take care of Georgetown at home and maybe sneak another couple out against Providence and Depaul at home. If they somehow shock Marquette, I'll be even happier, naturally.

Believe me, I like coach Mac and want him to succeed.. It’s just maddening as a fan to know that several of his teams, within the past 8 or 9 seasons, were good enough to advance to the Sweet 16 at least..and every time, has failed to do so. It’s obvious the fan base craves Sweet 16 experiences and even an Elite 8 or two..

Hopefully, we’ll see improvement the end of this season into next year...

I am confident if you wait a couple weeks Tim Miles will be available without having to buy out a contract.

Of all the great shooters at CU I am surprised it was Booker Woodfox.

Creighton has made a three-pointer in 844 straight games,
a first half trey in 215 consecutive games
and five or more trifectas in 64 contest in a row ...

It is Booker Woodfox, although Kyle Korver hit one in 27 straight games and then didn't attempt a 3 in a game breaking the streak, but went on to hit one in 20+ games after that.

H E L L Yes!!!!..

Finally! Mental toughness..on the road, against a top 12 ranked team.. Did the Jays force turnovers? Sure did..and scored 18 points off of Marquette turnovers alone.

Great GREAT win. Nice coaching job by Mac and the staff.. Now let’s build some momentum and take this home :thumb: ...

Did anyone else have a heart attack or several?

What an amazing win, and now we need to close out the final two. Then...March is within reach.

I really hope this is the sign that they've turned a corner. Their defense is toughening up, and they aren't wilting. Just keep building.

Martin Krampelj was a BEAST in this game.. This is very much the type of win the team can build on...

Point well-taken: McDermott's Jays now understand that defense can deliver wins

Loved the effort. Jays had a great game plan and were feisty defensively. It looked like an Altman team with the active hands. I thought for sure Marquette was about to pull away with 4-5 minutes left. But Creighton forced some turnovers and got points off them.

Good defense leads to good things in other areas too. When you rely on threes, that's pretty much your fate. But with Mac's ability to coach offense, he could become a real force if this active defense becomes a bigger part of his game plans.

Creighton's defense was the game changer, with some 15 steals, forcing 22 turnovers.
That 10-0 run down the stretch was great end of the game effort.
Ty-Shon Alexander's record 32 consecutive games with a 3 came at the right time.
Creighton has now beaten multiple ranked teams in each of the last five years
Creighton is now 15-30 under Greg McDermott against top-25 teams, compared to a 18-115 mark before his arrival
Creighton is now 5-13 under Greg McDermott in top-25 road games, compared to a 2-63 mark before his hiring
Creighton's 10 wins over top-25 teams since the start of 2016-17 trail only Villanova (17) among league teams
Creighton's four top-25 road wins in the last three seasons trail only Duke, Kansas and Virginia nationally.
Who'se saying we need a new coach now.

Amazing how a few wins can change perspective.

Great win for the Jays. Now they need to take care of business in the 2 games this week and have a strong showing the Big East tournament.

It's important to keep perspective here. While this win was fantastic, and sorely needed, I am not yet ready to back down from my reservations I have towards coach McDermott. Not saying he should be fired, but we need to be able to question things here.

For me, I want to see that the defensive effort these past few games is a permanent trend rather than an exception. I want to see success in March (doesn't need to be final fours, but christ, a Sweet 16 once in a while would be nice? Instead of one and done). Mental lapses late in the game, while we will never be 100%, I need to see a continuation of what we have seen these past few games in terms of a team that is prepared for the full 40 minutes.

So far, over the last 3 games, the team has shown great things, just need them to continue. Let's finish these next two games positively, and then win a game or two in the BE tourney, build momentum going into the off season unlike so many other years in recent memory.

IIRC McDermott recently named Paul Lusk "Defensive Coordinator", who is doing a great job, their game plans have shown a greater emphasis on D.

To steal one of your recent reactions to one of my posts- Yes. 1000 times yes!..

As I’ve stated here, I like Coach Mac. I want him to succeed. But the point of CU advancing to a Sweet 16 is completely valid.. as I realistically feel Mac has had 4 teams legit enough advance to Sweet 16..and one of those 4 good enough to advance to the Elite 8.. and that team couldn’t advance past the round of 32 (the others were one and done).. The way I see it, no Coach is above criticism.. I give coaches credit when it’s a job well done. But will question their game management decisions when the team stuns it’s fan base with a mind numbing loss..

So in the end, I’m liking this 3 game winning streak and defensive commitment and intensity. Let’s hope the Jays can finish the season with 5 straight wins and build huge momentum heading into the Big East Tournament...
