Does it really matter if you are getting on a charter plane and saying in a Hotel and being in another city how far away it is? One cannot predict the level of sickens at any location when this will be played (if) They will not all be a bus trip away and even then that only changed one aspect and in some ways can rais the possible exposure on a bus for more hours than a plane.Busguy2010 wrote: Wed Aug 05, 2020 10:41 am Curious... Re: Nebraska Football 2020
I mean playing a team in a known hotspot that has a known number of cases... I wouldn't feel too comfortable about it if I was a player. The issue would be teams in locations of lower exposure playing against teams of higher exposure, and the higher level of cross-contamination that would almost inevitably occur. The distance isn't the issue. Compartmentalization is the concept. It's working perfectly for the NBA, not as great for the MLB, but I'm sure the MLB is still better off playing their regional schedule.nebugeater wrote: Wed Aug 05, 2020 11:35 am it really matter if you are getting on a charter plane and saying in a Hotel and being in another city how far away it is? The cross-over matchups are Ohio State, Michigan State, Rutgers, and Penn State. Ohio state and Michigan State are still close enough, but Penn State is a bit of a stretch, and Rutgers is as far away as possible. Still think it would have been better to play within divisions, and add 4 non conference, but in-the region matchups. Could have been something like:
South Dakota State
Kansas
Iowa State
Oklahoma
Purdue
Wisconsin
Illinois
Northwestern
Iowa
Minnesota
I understand the complications of going out-of conference, but I think in a perfect world, if limiting the effects of the virus is the goal, keeping it regional as much as possible would be ideal and might be even preferred by the fans (revisiting old matchups).

Hard to believe in 1 month Nebraska will be playing football. Those first two games almost look like must wins for the big red. The stretch of games after that is going to be brutal. I’m optimistically thinking 5-5 when I look at this schedule. And 6 wins would be fantastic. This will be the first time Nebraska’s started the season on the road in quite a while.

I still belive there is a good chance there will be no or very few games played.

If Nebraska goes 6/4, that would be the equivalent of a top 25 finish. This is pretty much all the tough teams except Michigan.

Only 2 wins likely, the rest are toss-ups or likely losses. I'll be prepared for a 2-8 season, if there is any season at all. Not going to be juiced up about the 'Skers any time soon. I had no reason to believe they'd win 6 of 12, let alone 6 of 10 now.

I’m with Smucker on his main point.. I just don’t see the need to force feed college football down our collective gullets in 2020.. Especially when we’re smack dab in the “uncertainty zone” of a pandemic we have NO handle on yet.. If college football does happen this Fall, then it’s all about the almighty cash grab..and I don’t want to hear the Big 10 commish or any Big 10 AD’s opine that “safety of our student athletes is our primary concern”.. That would be a total load of BS!..GrandpaaSmucker wrote: Wed Aug 05, 2020 10:04 am They just released the Big 10 schedule and Nebraska is supposed to play at Rutgers 1 month from today on Sept 5th. I don't see that game being played but I'm thinking now and I know thinking seems to not be allowed during the pandemic. If Rutgers just shut down because over a dozen players are positive then how is it it possible that they safely play Nebraska so soon. The level of stupidity is shocking. The first home game for Nebraska is against Wisconsin on Sept. 19th. I give the chances of that game happening no better then 50/50! If they do play I'll take the Badgers for the easy win.

In fact, I’m at the point where I’ve written off 2020 completely as a dumpster fire..and as it relates to all sports (pro and college) until we break through to the other side of Covid-19..and have effective treatment which is helping stem the tide (think, hopefully, summer of 2021)..we table them all until such a time..

It is difficult to go all-in on football when you risk the potential of playing goes -poof- in your face. Still optimistic though on a much better outlook for covid19 past this month -IMO-.

For a reminder, according to CDC data (https://data.cdc.gov/api/views/9bhg-hck ... ormat=true) for the week ending 8/5, the total number of Covid19 deaths for people in the US up until age 24 is 270. This is less than half the number for that group with deaths due to pneumonia (covid19 unrelated) at 549. I don't know how, in a purely statistical basis, it can not be stressed that the covid19 threat presented to people 24 years and younger is NEGLIGIBLE (consider a total of 29,486 deaths for that age group).

Reports: Big Ten preparing to punt college football for 2020
ESPN reported that the commissioners of the Power Five conferences — the ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-12 and SEC — met Sunday to discuss the possibility of sports this fall, just days after the Big Ten schedule and additional SEC opponents were announced. Sports Illustrated, also citing anonymous sources, reported that the Big Ten presidents are moving toward postponement, with an eye on convincing other Power Five leagues to join them in a joint announcement.

I could completely understand why college football wouldn't go though, given classes and such... I want to believe the NFL will find a way to make it work, but the challenges are really difficult. It will be interesting. I'm only holding 50/50 hope for the NFL. But that's better than my hope for college football. Oh well... Less time and money spent at the bar and more time spent doing other things I like. I think it'll be alright.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Sun Aug 09, 2020 9:05 pm Agreed.. Reminder, as of 8/5/2020 CDC data https://data.cdc.gov/api/views/9bhg-hck ... ormat=true
and 2019 Census data https://www2.census.gov/programs-survey ... able1.xlsx
shows that of males between the ages of 15-24, 143 have died as a result of covid19 out of a census count of 21,261,000.
This breaks down to 1 in 148,678 deaths. To visualize this gets difficult as the matrix is very large (385x385). I know this goes straight in and out of peoples' ears anyway but here you go, cancel football-

Yeah, they aren't worrying about the dead players. They are worried about the dead fans, most of whom are old enough to be in at least 1 of the high risk groups.

Completely disagree. You don't think the athletic department (and the players) would take the route of playing games with no fans vs not playing at all? This is not about players' families & friends either (at least at NU) as those players could absolutely quarantine themselves for the duration of the season (they already have from early April-June according to Rob Zatechka on DocTalk). This is probably the reason why NU is forceful in wanting to play as they have put in serious preparation for it.

The players won’t be the problem. They are the attraction and the fans are the risk. Say they limit to 50k. That is still a bunch of folks in one space. You get some COVID going there and ESPN rips them a new one.

I'm not saying 50k, if it comes to it they would go zero. Barry Alvarez already floated that earlier at Wisconsin. NU will take TV money over no money (should get pretty good ratings given the limited selection).

Its one thing when people like you are so crazy and stupid that you would suggest that we just schedule our own games now....but when Scott Frost is talking that nonsense on TV then he needs to go as soon as we can dump him. That guys nuts. Don't these crazy people realize that when they say that stuff they are going against the medical experts and the Big 10 and every bit of science we know? Scott Frost did not work out at all. I actually wanted Scott Frost to come here and ignored the warnings from experts who said Frost was a risky pick. They were right and I was dead wrong.NUub wrote: Mon Aug 10, 2020 5:13 pm I'm not saying 50k, if it comes to it they would go zero. Barry Alvarez already floated that earlier at Wisconsin. Just last week Moos was saying they were thinking they’d only cut attendance down to 60,000 to 75,000. They’d have to cut it down to 15,000 to 25,000 to even come close to proper social distancing. I have no idea why the stupid Big 10 did a sudden about face on the season but you can bet it is not because they are worried about the players well being. I suspect it has everything to do with they are afraid if it all blows up and players get hurt or die then they fear the players will sue them into the dirt! What college football really wants is for Trump to pass a bogus law protecting them from liability just like he did for the packing houses.

Re: Nebraska Football 2020
If football is cancelled this year, it's going to be a huge hit. I think it's the right decision, but so many universities will be in big trouble without that revenue. I think the NCAA may have to be willing to think in ways it's never thought before. They may have to consider loosening minimum requirements for total sports offering at both the conference and D-1 level.
This may be a new normal. If there's no football this year, there's no guarantee that the economy will be in great shape next year to the point where schools will be selling out games. If that's the case, I don't know how these universities will be able to continue to justify offering 20+ sports. The olympic sports have generally been dead weight for many decades. They don't really justify their own existence. I could see a bloodletting being needed and proper given everything that's going on.
Really, I think that schools and conferences should focus on the top 5-6 men's sports that really matter for their fanbase/league and start with that. Then, offer as many women's sports as it takes to become Title IX compliant. The rest is basically superfluous.
At Nebraska, one could argue the only sports that "matter" are: Football, Basketball, Baseball, Volleyball, and Wrestling. You start there and build out enough to make it sustainable and Title IX compliant.
At UNO the sports that "matter" are: Hockey, Basketball, Baseball, Soccer, and Volleyball.
Really, if it weren't for league/NCAA mandates, I could probably cut a good 15 sports between UNL, UNO, and UNK and remain Title IX compliant. Hard decisions will need to be made and the league and NCAA will have to show a flexibility they've never shown before.

You know the players have been nose to the grind for months expecting to play, right? They are not running scared and hiding under their training tables, they've already put in a lot of preparation and made sacrifices. Many will face bouts of depression over the prospect of not playing football this season.GrandpaaSmucker wrote: Tue Aug 11, 2020 8:59 am I suspect it has everything to do with they are afraid if it all blows up and players get hurt or die then they fear the players will sue them into the dirt! What college football really wants is for Trump to pass a bogus law protecting them from liability just like he did for the packing houses.

We'll havet to see how it plays out with them being the first people that have had to make an adjustment or sacrifice in any way over COVID-19. Thoughts and prayers to them all.NUub wrote: Tue Aug 11, 2020 10:23 amYou know the players have been nose to the grind for months expecting to play, right? Yes. It's the best of times for everyone else but the poor downtrodden football players. Everyone else is living it up and they are out there sacrificing for all of us.Big E wrote: Tue Aug 11, 2020 4:17 pmWe'll havet to see how it plays out with them being the first people that have had to make an adjustment or sacrifice in any way over COVID-19. No one else will ever know the struggle they are facing.

I knew Scott Frost was going to embarrass Nebraska and make us look bad the second I seen him talking that trash about us just scheduling our own games......Sure enough tonight on ESPN we got what we had coming. I agree with the announcer on ESPN 100%. Nebraska is out of line going against the Big 10.
