Sounds like Keisei will only be a part of a small part of the Spain trip. Assuming he will be back home during it or something with his national team (not sure they gave a full reason).

Also talked about injuries:

Blaise Keita: doesn't sound like he will be ready to do anything for a while.
Juwan Gary: was good to go yesterday.
Josiah Allick: sounds like his ankle may be ok to play on at least part of the Spain trip.

It might be a blessing in disguise to have Keisei miss a part of it. We already know what he's capable of and his role. Will be good to get the newer guys acclimated and the extra playing time.

Greg

Thanks for the summary

No problem. One other name they brought up was Ramel Lloyd. Talked about how he was highly rated coming out of his school, playing big time basketball with the likes of Bronny James. He took the road less traveled anymore and redshirted (his choice) his first year. Spain will be the first time anyone outside of the team will get an extended look at him. I am kind of excited to see where he's at.

At one point, I had heard that there will be no way to see any of the games played in Spain. Live or delayed. No streaming option. Do you have any info on that that I may have missed?

I haven't though it seems like they have been kind of piecing together some streaming on the volleyball trip in South America. Maybe they can do similar with basketball?

I saw somewhere that Nebraska will be hosting some sort of mulit team event this winter. I know they did one last year but it didn't work so well.

Hopefully the athletic department is in charge of this one or at least more involved. Last season's was a mess. No promoting it. I don't even think it was included with season tickets.

I would not say that The Huskers hosted anything. What happened last year was a privet promotor that put on an event in Lincoln, and Nebr participated. Total flop on marketing, and it was not even offered as an optional add to the season ticket packages. I understand why it was not part of the package.

If something is done again, I do not see how it could be worse than what took place last year.

Can’t imagine the same promoter would do it again, but if they are, I would assume they learned their lesson. Will know soon enough I guess.

Another possible recruit. CJ Wilcher’s brother is asking out of his letter of intent from North Carolina. Nebraska and UCONN were the other finalists. 4 star ESPN Top 100 player:

Just listened to Robin Washut's segment on the Connor Happer show from a couple days go. Highlights.

Keisei Tominaga. Where he got to ring the bell at Indiana Pacers NBA workout for hitting at least 20 of 25 3's. Larry Bird was there watching when it happened. So cool. Keisei is missing the Spain trip because he left for Japan. He will be training and trying out for Team Japan, to play in the FIBA 2023 tournament in August. Sounds like he is all but assured to make it. Bummer he can't make the Spain trip but playing at list level of international competition for the summer is freaking fantastic for his development and can only pay dividends for NU next season.

On the recruitment of Simeon Wilcher. Robin thinks Nebraska will be a strong draw for him similar in vein to how we got Trey McGowens with Bryce McGowens. He's attracting a ton of interest but NU is in the thick of it.

For Mike Sharavjamts (according to this his nickname is "Mongolian Mike." Sounds like a visit is being scheduled soon.

Connor asked with Nebraska having 2 scholarships available if these could be the final 2. It doesn't sound like that will be the case. Wilcher is a point guard, and even though Mike Sharavjamt is listed as a forward and 6'8, Nebraska would use him as a point guard, similar to the way Sam Grieisel was used last year.

Good update on where things stand.

https://hailvarsity.com/basketball/hoib ... olarships/

Dayton transfer Mike Sharavjamts committed to San Francisco over other finalists Nebraska and Memphis on Friday, leaving the Huskers still sitting with two open scholarships.

The team is already on campus going through workouts. While the coaches will continue to do their due diligence with the players remaining in the portal and those that enter late, with each passing day it seems more likely the Huskers stand pat with their 11 scholarship players and four walk-ons.

Earlier this month after Keisei Tominaga announced his return, Hoiberg said he feels good about where the rester stands. That starts with the group of returners with more than 50% of the team’s scoring set to suit up again next season.

“I feel very good about our roster with getting the guys back that had a big impact, especially once we had the injuries. That experience that our guys gained in that area in roles that maybe increased as the season went on with Jamarques [Lawrence], with Sam [Hoiberg]. C.J. [Wilcher], I thought, finished the season playing his best basketball.”

Juwan Gary is part of that returning core as well, and he’s continuing to progress toward full health after his season-ending shoulder injury and subsequent surgery. He still has a few weeks until he’s cleared for full contact, but he’s doing everything else on the court. Blaise Keita is a couple weeks out as well.

As big as Tominaga’s return is, however, what kind of season Nebraska has in 2023-24 will largely be driven by the newcomers who are stepping into some big shoes left by the departing starters.

“You look at adding the types of players that we did, getting experience at our point guard position with [Ahron] Ulis,” Hoiberg said. “Brice Williams, to me, was a huge pickup for us because of versatility. He finished off last season playing incredibly well and won one of the postseason tournaments where he was the MVP, a guy that shot over 40% last year at over 6-7 … And then the other additions with Rienk [Mast], with Josiah [Allick]. Those were huge for us because of how we play and I think the skill level and the unique skill set that those guys bring to the table as well. So I really think this is a group that has versatility.”

Ulis won’t have too much of an adjustment to make going from one Big Ten team in Iowa to another, but the other three transfer are coming from lower levels. Williams played in Conference USA at Charlotte, Mast played in the Missouri Valley a Bradley and Allick played in the Mountain West at New Mexico (after three years in the WAC and Summit League at Kansas City). Production translation from those levels isn’t a given, but Hoiberg is confident in the players they added for multiple reasons.

“Can they match up physically I think is what you look at first and foremost, and you’ve got guys that have size,” Hoiberg said. “And then you look at what they did and their production against the Power Five when they did have matchups against those those schools. Then it’s just all about how they fit into your system. We feel that everybody that we’ve added to our roster does fit with how we play, and that, to me, is more important than maybe the level where they were at because all those guys put up great numbers and had very good production where they were, and we think that that will translate because they’ve got the size, they’ve got the strength and they fit with with how we want to play.”

Nebraska lists Williams, a wing capable of playing multiple positions, at 6-foot-7 and 215 pounds. Mast is 6-foot-10 and 240 pounds — a little undersized against the likes of Zach Edey, but strong enough to hold his own against most of the bigs he’ll see in the Big Ten. Allick, who is capable of playing either frontcourt spot depending on the matchup, is 6-foot-8 and 235 pounds. Even Ulis is 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds at the point guard spot.

For more on the transfers’ production against high-level competition, read last week’s Padding the Stats, and for more on how the newcomers fit, look at their film studies.

All the transfers have played at least three season of college basketball, but Nebraska also has some freshmen joining the mix in 2023 signee Eli Rice and redshirt freshman Ramel Lloyd Jr.

“Eli Rice has come in and he’s measured almost 6-8, and a kid that I think has a very bright future,” Hoiberg said. “Freshmen obviously have a big learning curve, but the fact that we have these two months leading into the Spain trip and then get some valuable experience over there. Ramel coming off his redshirt season, he’s made big gains in the weight room over the summer.”

Nebraska had some big holes in the lineup to fill, and Hoiberg did that with multi-position players who fit his system. While the roster may not be completely full, the Huskers seem to be in a good spot heading into a busy summer for the Huskers who will be departing for Spain in late July.

“Everything’s coming together and again, I think we’ve got different lineups that we could put out on the floor,” Hoiberg said. “We can play small, we can play big and it’s been a good offseason for us.”

He’s the big mystery because no one outside the program has seen him because of red shirt. I think some fans have forgot about him because of that. They have talked about him some on 1620 because he was so highly rated. They noted it was his choice to red shirt, coaches were good having him play last year.

Him and the new NIL players are what I am moat interested in to see for the games in Spain in July. I think it was a real good sign he didn’t go to the transfer portal. He must be comfortable with his standing on the team. Might also be why they don’t seem to be scrambling to fill final 2 scholarship spots.

A possible addition but I would put it as a very long shot as Paul Mulcahy name is being mentioned to a lot of big name programs. Almost a who's who in men's college basketball.

Yes, this is worse, however, his other DUI was 20 years ago. I’m going to guess he still keeps his job. Although, if they really want him gone, they weakened his contract so much last month that nothing really stands in their way anymore.

West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins will resign after DUI arrest, per reports

The Bob Huggins era at West Virginia is ending in an ugly fashion.

The longtime Mountaineers head coach told his players he will resign after a DUI arrest in Pittsburgh on Friday, according to Stadium's Jeff Goodman. CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein also reported Huggins has resigned.

They just signed several top players out of the portal. Had a tremendous off season. Nebraska was a finalist for one of them. Feel bad for those players as it’s probably too late in the game to switch this offseason.

Coaching search interesting too. Promote an assistant? Name an assistant as interim for fill season? Or try at an to make a permanent outside hire. If they go that route I assume they’d have to hire an Assistant from another team (or an unemployed coach). Can’t imagine a head coach leaving for this job after rosters are essentially set.

Keisei won't be the only Husker playing in the FIBA tournament this summer. New forward Reink Mast has been invited to play for the Netherlands:

Nebraska forward Rienk Mast will look to help the Netherlands qualify for the 2024 Olympics later this summer, as he has been invited to join the senior national team for the first time since 2019.

Mast, a 6-foot-9, 240-pound forward, will be with the national team from late July until following the team's FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament in Istanbul (Aug. 13-20). The schedule includes national team camp as well as exhibitions against Israel (Aug. 4) and Ukraine (Aug. 7). The teams in the Netherlands pool in Istanbul includes Sweden (Aug. 13), Belgium (Aug. 14) and Croatia (Aug. 16). The semifinals are set for Aug. 18 with the finals set for Aug. 20.

Mast will be making his second senior National Team appearance and first since 2019. He played in the 2019 Basketball World Cup qualifier averaging 4.3 points and 2.7 rebounds per game in three contests. He also played for the Netherlands at the U18 and U16 levels earlier in his career.

Mast is the second Husker selected for his nation's national team camp this week, joining Keisei Tominaga, who was named to Japan's roster on Monday.

Last year at Bradley, Mast earned first-team All-Missouri Valley Conference honors, leading the school in scoring (13.8 ppg) and rebounding (8.0 rpg) while shooting 51 percent from the floor and 35 percent from 3-point range. He ranked second in the MVC in rebounding, fourth in field goal percentage and 11th in scoring, as he finished third in voting for MVC Player of the Year. Mast totaled nine double-doubles, including 14 points and 12 rebounds in Bradley's NIT loss to Wisconsin. He had a career-high 30-point effort against Northern Iowa in the MVC Tournament.
