WASHINGTON — After steep price increases that sparked concerns about inflation earlier this year, many prices have fallen lately. Oil and other commodity prices are down sharply since midsummer. Housing prices have continued their long slide.

Meanwhile, consumer spending has slowed, and the economy is shedding jobs at an increasing rate. Credit markets are nearly frozen.

The confluence of trends has some economists worried that the country could be headed for a debilitating cycle of deflation: a period in which weak consumer demand, falling prices and tight credit ignite a downward spiral of still weaker demand and still lower prices. Under this scenario, as some businesses are strangled, joblessness increases, feeding the cycle.

That's kind of my point here, rising prices = bad, falling prices = bad, at least according to some media outlets. What gives? Not to be cynical or anything, but it will be interesting to see how the slant on economic reporting goes in a few more months....

Well since no one can afford gas OPEC has decided to reduce the amount of oil output and jack the price up. Oil dependency. Yay!

Gas is down to $2.09 at at least two stations in CB this morning (QT-17th & Broadway, Eddy's-East Broadway), so yeah, if prices keep going down, we'll hit $2 before election day.

2.14 in Nebr at Bucky's @ 13th st & I80 this AM at about 5:30

Also 2.15 at the two stations at I 80 & 370. That to me is an indicator of more prices dropping. They are NEVER the leaders on the way down and this was lower than all others except the above mentioned. It was 2.24 in Gretna.

$2.07 at most gas stations in Council Bluffs this morning. That's 25 cents drop in one week, over $1 drop this month!

1.99 in Gretna this AM and 1.97 at the two stations at 370 & I80 this morning.

Only card needed is a Debit / Credit card since most of the stations were pay at the pump only at the time of day I drove by !!!!

I was driving along I-80 from Ogallala to Omaha this weekend and I noticed something unusual. I was driving my usual speed above 75 (read: I have never received a speeding ticket) and only one single semi passed me. Now usually in the past they have passed me going 80 or higher but not anymore. They were all going 65 or 70. I was just wondering - was their a decision by trucking companies to save gas costs by going 65?

I drive the interstate a lot between Lincoln and Omaha. The self imposed reduction is speed of the 18 wheelers has been going on for may trucks for about a year. I think I have read where some of the larger trucking companies have programed their trucks to max out speeds at a much lower rate than in the past. All in the name of fuel economy.

Indeedly-doo. On another related note, gas has stuck at $1.83 for more than 36 hours now in CB, I can't remember the last time gas was at one price without changing in that period of time.
