More specifically, the plan estimated up to 16 single-family homes could be built, along with 48 townhomes, some with live/work models. The plan also envisions up to 76 condos, 184 apartments and mixed-use structures with leased commercial space. A 1.5-acre park at the landing of the pedestrian bridge and a smaller neighborhood park are also planned.

A Nov. 30 deadline has been set on bid responses with construction on the $60 million investment to begin in 2013.

Late on a chilly Sunday afternoon, I hiked around the River Edge's Great Lawn amphitheater. Wide curving sidewalks were under construction between the bike path and both end of the amphitheater’s staircase.

Just don't get in after a heavy rain. I have gone water skiing in the river many time.

. On a serious note, this park is looking great. They did a nice job with all the trees and the hardcapes on the river side of the levee. Does anyone know if the road to Harra's Casino is open yet under the 480 bridge?

Playing With Fire is coming back to the riverfront, but it will jump sides to Iowa.

The annual free concert — typically featuring big-name blues, jazz, soul and funk groups — will take place May 27 at River's Edge Park in Council Bluffs.
Acclaimed soul and funk group Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings will headline the concert. The band headlined Playing With Fire in 2011, the only year the concert was away from the riverfront.

A powerful vocalist, Jones has been compared to Etta James and Bettye Lavette.

“Everything we do is gonna be from the soul. We like that sound,” she told The World-Herald in 2011.

Soul-rock group Vintage Trouble, local funkers Satchel Grande, local blues artist Mojo Bag and Savannah, Ga., singers M2J will open the show.
River's Edge Park is at the foot of the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge in Council Bluffs. Playing With Fire will be part of the park's grand opening festivities, which begin with a free Beach Boys concert on May 25.

COUNCIL BLUFFS — Officials unveiled grand opening plans Monday for the new River's Edge Park that graces the Council Bluffs riverfront.

The park will officially open Memorial Day weekend with two weeks of events, May 25 through June 8. The festivities, called Loess Fest, will kick off May 25 with a performance by the Beach Boys. Other performances will include the Omaha Symphony, on May 26, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, on June 8.

The new park also has an amphitheater to accommodate up to 1,100 people. Larry Foster, Council Bluffs' director of parks, recreation and public property, said that with people sitting or standing on the great lawn, performers could entertain a crowd of up to 10,000.

Parking also was added to provide access to the park.

A two-lane park road begins in Harrah's Council Bluffs Casino & Hotel parking lot a half-mile away and connects to a 150-stall parking lot inside the park.

Titled Rays, the eight-minute interactive light display will run on the hour and half-hour, he said. It’s a $500,000 installation by artist Dan Corson and funded by the foundation, Tulipana said.

We were over there on Friday afternoon. I noticed there were a heck of a lot of electrical things yet to be installed. Must be part of the interactive display.

What exactly is this interactive display? All the electrical things you are talking about are now hooked into galavanized utility poles so whatever it is, it appears to be permanent. There are no lights on them yet and it seems the park already has plenty of regular lighting so it should be interesting.

It will project an 8 minute light display using the great lawn as the "screen."

The lawn will also feature an interactive light display, called “Rays,” by artist Dan Corson. Using 16 light projectors, it will colorfully illuminate the area around the lawn after dark, with changing light patterns visible from Omaha.

Cool...I wonder if this will be laserlights or something else.

Crews were installing the lights for the interactive display today. They look like concert lighting and like they will produce a very powerful beam. This thing should be pretty cool.

Council Buffs City Council to vote on new art for River's Edge Park

The council will be asked to give the go-ahead for the installation of a 65-foot-tall sculpture by Mark di Suvero in River’s Edge Park, across the Missouri River from downtown Omaha. Specifically, the art piece by the internationally-known sculptor will be located on the southwest corner of the park’s expansive Great Lawn.
The sculpture, approved on a 6-2 commission vote in February, would be painted with di Suvero’s signature orange color and will feature a kinetic – or moving – piece at the top.
“The foundation has agreed to pay for its acquisition and installation, and pay for amenities around the sculpture like lighting, benches and landscaping, like a little plaza,” Foster said.

Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings cancel Loessfest show

The renowned soul/funk group was set to perform Monday in a Playing With Fire concert at River’s Edge Park in Council Bluffs as a part of Loessfest, a grand opening series of events at the park.

“Sharon and the Dap-Kings are all tremendously disappointed they are unable to appear and trust fans will understand. They hope to see them at another show soon,” read a press release.
The release cited “an urgent family matter” for the cancellation.

Just drove by a little while ago, the stage is by the river with the seating area facing downtown Omaha.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to make it....we were moving into our first house today, but apparently there were an estimated 17,000 watching the concert.
