...Yet
With the switch to intel, macs are already becoming very upgradeable. Even the new intel mac mini can have it's processor swapped (finally!). The only limitation right now is the motherboard firmware keeps you from using any motherboard you want.

So much for the RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer) superiority claim.

DO NOT get this thread locked with gearhead garbage. Take it to CNET or some other live-in-my-parents-basement Mecca. Every one of these threads devolves into inanae bickering over .01% FPS tweaks and how my $9000 machine is better than your $900 laptop.

DON'T DO IT.

*sigh* You mac people don't even know what GPU means.
I did know what it meant, but your right, I don't play games and I didn't know that PC's had video cards with 4 GPU's on them. That is why I asked...
Is there a GPU with four processers for PC?
Microsoft genuinely wants to help the consumer by responding to the things consumers tell them they want.
Yeah, cuz we have been screaming for abusive DRM on all of our software and hardware. Just SCREAMING for it!

No offense..But the dialog in here is getting pretty silly..

I know, I know, I just can't let an Apple dig go unchecked

Back to topic.....

I found out the Apple student discount for Aperture is $250 (%50 off). Can the Apple Store come any sooner?

I just read that Rockbrook camera was opening a store at Legacy. With Best Buy's move to Village Pointe, and Apple store at Village Pointe, and a Specialty Camera store in Legacy, West Omaha is becoming a Mecca of Electronics retail for Omaha. Could all these shops start to give NFM some real competition? Would us Hummer driving Suburbanites take our gas mongers all the way to 72nd and Dodge for our electronics needs?

This is an interesting question and observation..Indeed with more intense high profile competition locally, it will certainly provide Omahans with some flexable options as it relates to these businesses competing for our electronics dollars..

It may even incite a good 'ol price war or two..

I wouldn't be totally surprised if NFM stops carrying Apple products once the Apple Store opens. I have no idea what kind of movement they get there, but I know the Apple Stores have driven smaller Apple specialists out of some markets, but not necessarily by anti-competitive means - they're just better than some small stores. Some smaller retailers have actually thrived by offering services the Apple Store doesn't, and then benefitting from the added exposure.

My brother works at NFM and looked into the friends and family discount for me. He was told that the margins on Apple computers were the slimist of all the PC manufactuerers they carry. I don't know about peripherals. They weren't able to give me any discounts. I have to take his word for it, but if that is true then I wouldn't be surprised if NFM did quit selling Apple computers.

I'm curious what CompUSA will do. They have a somewhat polished Apple retail section in their store (Much nicer then NFM's hit and miss Apple layout.) I know once the Apple store is open, I will probably not see the inside of CompUSA for a long time.

Best Buy does carry the Mac Mini and iPods, being so close to an Apple store will probably hurt sales in those two segments for Best Buy.

Aside from the ipod, Apple represents a tiny piece of the consumer electronics pie. This new store won't make but a tiny blip on the charts of Omaha's other retailers. It will be cool to finally have one though!

I think you might be suprised. Apple has done a brilliant job at marketing themselves to young art and design students and grad. My girlfriend got one (of her soon to be three) degrees in Graphic Design at Creighton. Everyone of her friends who was a GD major (probably 45 or so) now owns Apple.

And from personal experience as an art and film major, I'd rather use Photoshop on my Apple than on my PC (I have both, with a copy of Photoshop on both).

There's a reason Apple's stock has more than doubled in the last year.

I agree with that when it comes to personal computers, but I think it will make a dent with MP3 players and accessories. Apple stores carry a HUGE selection of iPod gear. With iPods costing upwards to $350+ more of the West O crowd will buy from there local Village pointe specialists then drive to Best Buy or NFM.

I think the combination of specialty electronics stores (rockbrook camera, best buy, Apple, EBgames, etc) will make a dent, not just the Apple store alone. Especially when retail at 72nd and Dodge is in a limbo sort of state (Crossroads mall refrence).

As in "Aside from the ipod". :)

Apple barely has 2% of the PC market (100% of the art/design student market? :P). Mini Coopers are cool to, but it will be a very long time before any appreciable number of people own them.

Apple barely has 2% of the PC market
In the US, it is closer to 4%
I don't want to go down the road of another off-topic argument again, but Lexus has about 4% of the American automobile market, and think how often you see a Lexus. (4% doesn't seem so insignifigant now does it?)

Well that's the result of those 'better to look good than feel good' suburbanites simply >paying closer attention to< the expensive Lexus models out on the street. I guess if the 13 year old girl some Apple pedophile is talking to (just a random example, not in any way suggesting that Mac users, artists, or graphic designers are pedophiles), also notices and admires his Mac through his webcam, then Apple users can have that same visibility. :P

The Apple section at CompUSA will remain unchanged. It will still have an Apple employee working there.

I am a certified Apple Product Professional and I am excited for the store to open.
