It's tough to say when it will happen.. not soon though. I'm perfectly happy here, and I've found that inner fortitude. Thanks for that philosophical bit though... :)

Me too!

And Finn is correct about that 15.6% growth rate. Omaha grew at a 1.34% clip in 1 year. A positive spike as this rate far outpaces cities such as Minneapolis, Denver, Kansas City, Oklahoma City and Tulsa for the year..

Lets look a bit closer into Omaha's metro numbers:

2000 Census population: 767,041
2004 Census estimate: 803,301..

Omaha has added 36,260 to it's metro population since 2000 and the 4 year growth rate equals 4.73%. So overall through 2004, Omaha is growing at about a 12% clip. If the growth spike seen between 2003-2004 continues, it is very possible Omaha could grow by about 15% by the 2010 census. But the current 12% clip is very healthy and right at the national average..

..Ciao..LiO....Peace
Actually, when you add the numbers up correctly, Metro Omaha's growth rate for the decade so far has been 4.5% (803,201 for the 8 counties + Dodge county on 4-1-2000 compared with 839,867 fifty-one months later in the 2004 census). That works out to about a 10.6% growth rate if carried out over a full 120 months (10 years). That would take a 9 county metro area to 888,260 on 4-1-2010. Remember, these figures (except for the 4-1-2000 numbers) are estimates, not based on an actual official census, which happens only once every 10 years.

For the heck of it, at a 10.6% decade growth rate for the forseeable future, metro Omaha (9 counties) would get to 982,415 in 2020 and 1 million in 2023. Gosh, the World-Herald actually did the math correctly! Stop the presses!
Once again, the correct growth rate for the Omaha MSA (not CMSA) is 4.73% for the 4 year period between 2000-2004..It may be 4.5% for the CMSA but not for the actual 8 county metro area..FYI..

You guys have the same problem as Des Moines, you exagerrate everything around the area to add an extra 200,000 when you know the reality of people who work, live, and consider themselves part of Omaha metro is much less than the so-called "CMSA" that includes counties that have nothing to do with the metro.

You really think counting towns over 30 miles and connected by nothing but FARMLAND like Fremont are part of the metro? Please, give me a break.

Omaha Metro is Douglas, Sarpy, and Pottawattamie counties. The combined population of those three counties roughly equals 680,000 depending on which county census you use.

Saying you guys are 880,000 metro is innaccurate and misleading...someone should be honest enough to say that 880,000 is very off unless you count all of eastern Nebraska which your CMSA is stretched to.

Omaha's MSA is 803,801..CMSA is 840,000..

According to the 2004 US Census estimates..

I don't know anyone who is peddeling a 880,000 number..Although it's not far off..

Lighten up..

Roy,

Omaha's metro population is what the census bureau says it is (790,000) CSA (820,000). Nobody is claiming that it is 880,000. Maybe you're confused by Cowboy's 2010 projecton of 880,000?

Besides, every metro in the country is inflated by the inclusion of outer counties. That's why contiguous urban population stats are lower than metro population stats. Denver is certainly not immune from this kind of inflation.

And if you think this board is full of inflationists, you should check out the reaming DTO has gotten for including Lincoln's numbers as part of Omaha's in his sig.

Actually edsas, the 2004 metro estimate for Omaha is 803,801 and the CSMA is 840,000..FYI..

And YES. The Omaha metro population may very well end up at 880,000 for 2010..My projection is 850,000 on the low end and 880,000 on the high..

There's nothing unofficial about the 2004 figures. They're estimates in both cases.

I think Cow Ror is being a (Hater) as i like to callem. Here in Atlanta sometime you drive 10 min from downtown to the west and your in country town with nothing around you really. You drive another 10 miles your in another city with urban sprawl. It sometimes goes in and out of heavily populated areas. There are people who live citeies and counties away from DT Atl almost into tennesee and definatly into alabama that are included in are CSA. Why, because its all one region where people work play and live. When I look at Omaha and lincoln I see them consolodating sooner than people think only because now Omaha is being advertised all over the country as a place that is great to live and raise a family and once people come and visit they see your improvments and go tell everybody about it. Look how all of a sudden boise idaho just hit a big boom of growth within a few years. I see Omaha and Lincoln being like Raliegh-Durham, NC. Even though they have more people the distance between the two cites is similar to omaha-lincoln and eventually it created one metro for them.

Actually Raleigh and Durham are considerably closer than Omaha and Lincoln... but DTO, more importantly here... note it's called >> RALEIGH-DURHAM << ... not 'Raleigh' or 'Durham'. You can update your graphic anytime with 'Omaha-Lincoln'.

If this is to happen, there has to be a cohesive marketing effort between both cities. This means not forgetting to include Lincoln in marketing efforts, even though Omaha is the bigger, badder city.
