I think Patton isn't going to regret the $5m he is guaranteed to get from the Wolves for his first two years, and the likely 10-15m he'll make the rest of his career. For guys that come from his lower-income home situation, jumping to the NBA makes more sense - if he had broke his foot offseason before his third (redshirted first year) Creighton season and not developed further in the NCAA, he is making 100k/year playing in Italy.

What I understand about Thomas is that he has some more financial flexibility, and if he doesn't get a first round draft grade this year, I bet he stays. He plays in a top-3 NCAA league, will get seen more against elite competition, plus Foster graduating will give him the ability to showcase more of his offensive ability. Foster profiles in the NBA as a 6th man or spot starter on a quality team unless he makes another big leap, Thomas profiles as an elite 3-D wing if he steps his shooting up another notch. For him, a senior season showcase makes sense, and he won't cost himself anything if he gets injured. For JP, 3 more years of risk didn't calculate out.

From a financial standpoint, everything you’ve mentioned about JP makes obvious sense. Can’t and won’t argue that..Cash in while you can and take care of yourself/family..

But, man.. Patton’s game wasn’t NBA ready when he took the leap last year and from the looks of it, it still isn’t.. Perhaps it never will be.. The NBA/Twolves were dropping coin on potential. Sometimes it pans out sometimes it doesn’t. Regardless, I still think he could have used one more “year of risk” in college developing his game against elite competition. Who knows, maybe he wouldn’t have broken his foot if he stayed at Creighton..

Oh well. In the end, at least he got paid...

It was announced earlier this week that Patton would finish his season with Minnesota after the Timberwolves G League affiliate, the Iowa Timberwolves, failed to make the playoffs.

Imagine having these injury issues while staying another year at Creighton and falling out of the first round guaranteed money. If anything this supports getting paid as soon as you can.

Agreed. Even if he never plays another NBA game, he can stretch that money for decades comfortably.

The theme seems to be “at least he got paid”.. I get it. But he’s supposed to get paid to play basketball. The Minnesota Timberwolves paid for potential.. They’ve seen no return for their investment. JP was not mentally or physically ready to play in the NBA. Maybe he’ll get there. The tea leaves I’m reading are very cloudy for that..

If he had had these issues at Creighton I think the getting paid part would be seriously in doubt. To me this is exactly why you turn pro if you can go in the first round. We don't know yet if he can play in the NBA because he really hasn't been healthy enough to showcase his talents (or lack there of).

If he had stayed at CU and had these inuries, I don't see a team drafiting him in the first and guaranteeing the money.

Wow. And he still has problems with his left foot.

“In June, The Athletic's Jon Krawczynski reported that Patton would be out through most of the fall while recovering from left foot surgery. His latest injury will likely prolong the recovery.”

While the Timberwolves said after Patton's surgery in September that he was out indefinitely, Patton told NBC Sports Philadelphia that he "definitely" plans to play this season, though he's not sure of an exact timeline.

I agree...

But as so many argued a couple years back when he bailed to the NBA draft before he was ready- He got paid! So apparently that trumps any sort of legendary linage he could have written had he stacked up a meaningful college career with the Bluejays...

In my view, Patton is going to have a chance to be a solid bench contributor/spot starter for the right team. The way the modern NBA is going, he probably doesn't make it as a regular starter unless he manages to get his 3p% up into the high 20s or 30s, but if he improves his defense, his rebounding rate keeps the same growth curve for another year or two, and he avoids any more major injuries, he'll get there. Think Clint Capella or Steven Adams (which is part of why the Thunder picked him up)
