Omaha vs Denver - February 25, 2022

Omaha takes care of business! Demolishing #3 Denver, 5-1!
Omaha 19-13 Denver 21-7-1

Omaha Jumps on No. 3 Denver Early in Win

On the eve of his 19th birthday, Ty Mueller started a celebration of his own. It was impromptu in nature, and his guests included a crowd of 5,215 at Baxter Arena. Mueller scored twice in the first 14 minutes as Omaha raced to a 3-0 lead on No. 3 Denver Saturday in front of an energized fanbase. The quick start sent the Mavericks (20-13) to a 5-1 win over the Pioneers (22-8-1) in an NCHC series opener.

Late Penalties Prove Costly in Loss to DU

In the record books, No. 3 Denver left Baxter Arena with a 5-2 win over Omaha on Saturday. The Mavericks, however, felt like their NCHC series finale with the Pioneers was there to be taken.

Omaha (20-14) held a 2-1 lead until Carter Savoie scored on a power play with 9:03 left to pull the Pioneers (23-8-1) even. Consecutive penalties on the Mavericks, the second of which was a five-minute major, set the stage for the final result. Denver scored twice on the ensuing power play to pull in front.

Omaha up to #19
Omaha will play #7 Western Michigan this weekend in Michigan (First round NCHC playoffs)
Omaha has beat #3 and #5 in the past two weekends
Former Omaha assistant, Former Lancers Head coach Mike Hastings' Minnesota State Mavericks still hold the #1 spot.

Omaha Opens Postseason at No. 7 WMU Omaha

This Week
Omaha begins postseason play in the best-of-three National Collegiate Hockey Conference quarterfinals against No. 7 Western Michigan. Games are scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday (if needed).

The Teams
Omaha made a push at the end of the season by going 4-2 against No. 8 St. Cloud State, No. 3 Denver and No. 4 North Dakota. It claimed seven of 12 possible NCHC standings points against the league co-champions over the past two weekends after sweeping the Huskies the week before. It has seven wins vs. Top 10 teams.
Western Michigan bounced back from being swept at North Dakota by taking two games from Miami to end the regular season. The Broncos are a lock to make the NCAA tournament after a strong regular season. They enter the postseason sitting fifth in the Pairwise rankings, assuring them of at least an at-large bid.

UNO's Saville signs with the Las Vegas Knights (they had drafted him in the 5th round of 2019, and held his rights). Several other UNO players just signed with NHL and AHL:

We now head into a very critical offseason for Coach Gabinet.

Yeah, some big skates to fill across the board. I think Austin Roden had some good games in goal this year and could have a good senior year next year.

Others going pro:
Brandon Scanlin (New York Rangers)
Taylor Ward (Los Angeles Kings)
Nate Knoepke (AHL's Rochester Americans)
Brannon McManus (AHL's Abbotsford Canucks)

Austin Roden entered the transfer portal just before Saville signed with the Knights. Not sure if he knew that was coming? Will be interesting to see if he changes his mind now if he didn't. Haven't heard anything lately on him.

Supposedly our new arriving recruit, Simon Latkoczy (from Slovakia) is really good. I do hope Roden has a change of heart.

UNO took some hits this off season.

That's a bummer. Was kind of hoping he'd stay but figured he probably knew Saville was leaving before he announced (even though Saville's announcement followed).

UNO hockey's season ended earlier than the Mavs' wanted, but Gabinet sees plenty of positives

Catching up with UNO hockey coach Mike Gabinet these days isn’t easy. He’s busy on the recruiting trail as he works to rebuild the Mavericks’ roster.

Unlike this past season when almost everyone returned, Gabinet will have several holes to fill for the 2022-23 season. A combination of factors — graduation, turning pro, the transfer portal — has led to at least 10 players moving on.

Former Omaha assistant, Former Lancers Head coach Mike Hastings' Minnesota State Mavericks are heading to the National Championship Game at the NCAA Frozen Four! I was there the night Hastings and the Lancers won the USHL National Championship, it would be cool to see him win an NCAA Championship.
