Nebraska gets massive boost to 2024 class with Dae'Vonn Hall and Isaiah McMorris commitments

Matt Rhule and his staff are keeping two of the best in-state prospects home. Nebraska has landed commitments from wide receivers Dae’Vonn Hall and Isaiah McMorris from Bellevue (Neb.) West. The high school teammates committed to Nebraska together over social media ahead of their official visits this weekend.

Nebraska landed commitments No. 16 and 17 when in-state wide receivers Dae’Vonn Hall and Isaiah McMorris announced their commitments to the Huskers. Hall is a four-star recruit and the country’s No. 60 wide receiver. McMorris is a three-star and is the No. 75 wide receiver in the nation.

Hall and McMorris combined for 152 catches last year, 2271 yards, and 26 touchdowns as juniors last season at Bellevue West. The two also excelled in track together as well. Hall ran a PR in the spring of 10.62, and McMorris recorded a PR of 10.65.

Bellevue West to Nebraska pipeline is strong as McMorris and Hall commit to Huskers

While in Lincoln on their official visits to Nebraska, Thunderbird wide receivers Isaiah McMorris and Dae’vonn Hall committed to the Huskers via Instagram live. Hall and McMorris are ranked the number two and three high school prospects in Nebraska, respectively. The two receivers are joining their quarterback Daniel Kaelin in the Huskers class of 2024 recruiting class after Kaelin committed to Nebraska in May. Kaelin is ranked as the number four prospect in the state.

Last season, Kaelin tossed 36 touchdowns for the Thunderbirds, 25 of which went to McMorris or Hall. With the addition of McMorris and Hall, Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule now has five commitments from in-state recruits in the class of 2024.

Huskers add 2024 kicker to walk-on class
Nebraska adds 2024 kicker to walk-on class.

Nebraska football has placed an emphasis on specialists since Matt Rhule took over in Lincoln, and added another option in 2024 in walk-on kicker Nico Ottomanelli. The Old Tappan (N.J.) kicker/punter has visited Nebraska multiple times since Rhule and his staff took over — most recently visiting for a specialists camp in June. The 6-foot-2, 170-pounder is the No. 87-ranked kicker by Kohl’s kicking and received the opportunity at Nebraska earlier this week.

On Sunday, he officially announced his intentions to join the NU program as a walk-on in 2024.

I know that the announcements are meant to make us think that Rhule is kickin butt on the recruiting trail, so after a quick google, he kind of is. As of February, Nebraska was ranked 24th; if they can string together a few solid wins in a row, I think it will really help to improve their rank for 2024.

Tony White's just got a big pay raise. Fantastic news for the program.

After guiding Nebraska football to its best defensive performance in the Big Ten era, Husker associate head coach/defensive coordinator Tony White has signed a restructured contract. White has been a nominee for the Broyles Award in both 2022 and 2023, an honor given to the nation’s top assistant coach.

Under the terms of the restructured contract, White’s annual salary has been increased to $1.6 million per year for each of the two remaining seasons on his contract.

“Tony White has all the attributes you look for in a coordinator or assistant coach,” Nebraska Head Coach Matt Rhule said. “He builds great relationships with his players and fellow coaches and is an elite teacher and communicator. We made great strides on defense this past season, and I look forward to continuing to work with Tony as we move forward and build this program.”

The 2023 Nebraska defense was the nation’s third-most improved unit against the run, and ranked as the fourth-most improved in total defense. Eight Nebraska defensive players earned All-Big Ten recognition for their play this fall.

“I am proud of what our players accomplished this year and am excited to build on that success moving forward,” White said. “It is a privilege to have the opportunity to coach at Nebraska, and to work for a great leader in Coach Rhule, and I feel honored to work alongside our defensive staff every day. Go Big Red!”

The statistical milestones for the Nebraska defense in the first season under Rhule and White in 2023 included:

Nebraska allowed 303.5 yards per game in 2023, the best total defense average at Nebraska since 2009. Nebraska ranks 14th nationally in total defense, the program’s first top-25 defensive ranking since 2010.
The Blackshirts rank eighth nationally in rushing defense, allowing just 92.9 yards per game, which is Nebraska’s best run defense since 1999. Nebraska held eight of 12 opponents to less than 100 rushing yards in 2023.
Husker opponents were held to 14 or fewer points in eight games in 2023, and Nebraska ranks 17th nationally in scoring defense at 18.3 points per game. That is the program’s best scoring defense average since 2010.

That's about the best news we could hope for. I thought I heard vaguely he was attracting some head coaching interests, so I was a little worried. That defense alone gives reason for hope. Only with better ball security we might actually see 9 wins again soon.

Yeah he got interviewed for the San Diego State job, where he had coached for a while. His name was mentioned for another job but I can’t remember which.
