I think I'm missing something, so where's the new Stokes opening up at? They have the best fish tacos, so awesome to hear that they are doing so well.

I walked by during lunch today and they have a section of the sidewalk barred off for patio seating. They have some decorations up on the inside and it looked like they were setting up the dining room area. The handicapped entrance on Howard St looks completed. The whole place looks great. I can't wait for it to open.

The Stokes out west here always has a packed patio on nice days, what a great addition.

After dining at the Indian Oven last evening my partner and I took a leisurely stroll up Howard St., to see the progress at Stokes. Well, they are OPEN...and doing great business. It is a very sophisticated, urban looking restaurant and bar. A nice addition to the Old Market. I can't wait to check it out.

BTW, nothing beats strolling the Old Market in the evening as a soft snow is falling. I did feel sorry for the horses having to be out in the cold, however. They didn't seem too happy.

I ate there Friday with the girlfriend. The food was some of the best Mexican I've had. The place was packed from wall to wall for the two hours we were there. Bar service was very average, but our waitress was very good. I'd definitely go back...

I have eaten at the original Stokes a bunch of times, and never considered their food to be "Mexican." I particularly love their steamed mussels in red sauce.

I think its southwest inspired contemporary dining.

I have never eaten at Bobby Flay's Mesa grill, but I am guessing its along the same lines.

I was referring to Midtown Charlie's comment. :D

I think it will be a long time before one of the celebrity chefs branches one of their restaurants out to little ol' Omaha. Wolfgang Puck has probably gone the furthest. I believe he has ventured into markets the size of Denver and MPS.

Warm colors, southwestern flavors help downtown restaurant feel like a hearth
Omaha World Herald wrote:On a perennially dark stretch of 12th Street, the sign for the new Stokes glows a soft ember-orange. And, although its brick Old Market space (former home to Crawdad's furniture shop) has more inherent charm than the original Stokes, the décor keeps the same theme: New Mexico meets Napa Valley meets Pier 1. Ditto for the menu. Although specials differ from place to place, the menu's the same as the original Stokes': predominantly southwestern, with glimmers of French, Asian, Italian and American. And, based on two recent visits, the southwestern fare and the wines are what shine. It wasn't exactly quiet, but nearby tables were at different heights to help minimize the noise. And the sound was more cocooning than headache-inducing. Although there were two flat-screen TVs in the nearby bar area, a little Mayan mama in that metal scrollwork thoughtfully screened them from our view.

The food is good, and imaginative by Omaha standards. The atmosphere is great. Great margaritas. Prices range from $10 to about $40 for a meal (drinks extra), evidencing their wide menu range.

I've never eaten at Stokes and probably never will, but that is a HUGE improvement for that corner.

Now if they can just put in apartments above Stokes and above Delice, and fill in that small crappy parking lot next to Little King with apartments, that corner will be perfect!

I just got back from Stokes in the OM. Here's my thoughts on the place.

Decor

Very nice. The booths had pillows which is a nice touch. There is a southwestern look to the place but it's subtle. More southwestern chic.

Service

One of the things I love about working down here is that I get to the places right when they open and their is no one else there so it's always good no matter where I go.

Food

I ordered the Alamos pasta. It was mostly ok. It tasted good but for the price I would have expected more than I got. It came with a soft tortilla and the pasta seemed to taste better rolled up like a taco than just plain pasta.

Dessert

Holy |expletive|! Bananas Fargo is my new heroin. It was so good that I just wanted to take a spoon and shovel it all into my face. But like I said since I get there early, no one was around so I did it anyways. :)

We were out celebrating my B-Day last night and we stopped in Stokes for another Drink and some Desert after dinner at Vincenzos. The Bananas Fargo was Amazing. My mom also got the daily special desert, another banana creation, it was great as well!

I thought that too, but there is a bit of unused space in the Old Market right now. It's nice to see some of it put to good use.

I think its going to be great for Stokes! They have a great party room at 114th and Dodge and something they are really lacking out downtown.

1. Lunch time its just used as additional tables to handle the lunch rush.
2. Friday night rehearsal dinner parties for weddings.
3. Holiday parties for downtown businesses.

I was trying to think how many places in the market actually have room for a larger party? Upstream, Spag Works, Sullivan's

Blue's top floor, and there's an undeveloped space behind Roja (that used to be part of the Cactus cafe) that will eventually likely be converted into a party room as well.

For bars you could include O'Connor's upstairs and (all a portion of) Nomad. I think Urban Wine also has a room but I'm not sure how big that space is.

Well did the diversity in Old Market offerings increase? No. Not to start a shi+storm but this is just "sprawling" businesses in the Old Market.
