Not too bad a drop at all. Only one notch to 14th..
I expected worse- maybe down to 17th. So I’m pleased to see this. Although I’d REALLY be pleased if the Jays somehow won the Big East for the 2nd straight year

Good to see not a huge drop off. Also, Kansas's win over Baylor was huge....I so wish we had that game back.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Mon Mar 01, 2021 12:38 pm Not too bad a drop at all. Only one notch to 14th..

Re: Creighton Basketball 2020-2021
Glad to see only a one spot drop as well.
Still don't understand the AP's love for the Big 10. It is the best overall conference but to have 4 teams in the top 7.
Iowa has 3 losses to teams at or barely above .500 yet they are ranked 5th. No way should they be that high. If they would actually call a hook on Garza, Iowa's offense would be much less lethal. He hooks the defender on almost every possession.
I think the Jays are ranked appropriately, but Ohio St has lost 3 in a row and is still 8th. At least their losses are to better teams than Iowa lost to.

Villanova is the favorite to win the Big East Tourney with Creighton close behind. $10 on Creighton to win the Big East Tourney gets you just $20. $10 on Creighton to make the Final 4 in the big dance wins you just $50. I don't think any of those bets pay you enough for the risk but their odds show the experts think Creighton has a chance.

Welp, That was an interesting turn of phrase from Coach McDermott. That isn't a good look right now, and definitely not a distraction that needed to be added to the pile.

On Feb. 27, after an emotionally tough loss on the road, I addressed our student-athletes and staff in the postgame locker room and used a terribly inappropriate analogy in making a point about staying together as a team despite the loss," McDermott tweeted.MadMartin8 wrote: Tue Mar 02, 2021 5:48 pm Welp, That was an interesting turn of phrase from Coach McDermott. "I immediately recognized my egregious mistake and quickly addressed my use of such insensitive words with the team," McDermott added. "I have never used that analogy, and it is not indicative of who I am as a person or as a coach. I am deeply sorry."

It's a bummer that while it was said on Saturday, it's coming out today... so the lockeroom immediate apology apparently wasn't enough to fix the issue. It's also a bummer that this one incident might overshadow the other work he has done to empower his players in speaking in regards to black lives matter, etc.
Just not a good day.

But from what I understand, he is getting roasted by former players such as Justin Patton and Maurice Watson Jr on Twitter..so that only helps to fuel the fire onto this situation..
From an on court basketball standpoint, heading into their biggest game of the year, this is clearly a happenstance that is totally unwelcome.. I’m pretty much at a loss for words..which for me, is an unusual occurrence..
I wonder, out loud, if coach Mac is going to be asked to resign...

While Patton and Watson may be grilling him on twitter (Watson doesn't surprise me, Patton I haven't seen and I guess I don't really need to).. I think Zegarowski's dad came to his (McDermott's) support somewhat, which is interesting.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Tue Mar 02, 2021 7:37 pmThe use of that word was absolutely inappropriate by Mac. Furthermore, admittedly while I haven't been on this earth for as long as some of you have, I have never in my life heard that turn of phrase before...and I haven't talked to anyone who has...which kind of makes it even worse. With all the focus on BLM and with the current climate, I just can't contemplate a scenario in which you don't watch your words, even in the 'heat of the moment' after a loss. It would just suck if this sunk the season.
Edit: And like you, I wonder if this would mark the end of his tenure here. Of all things to sink his career, I would have NEVER in a million years think it would have been because of this.

And yes. This could cause irreversible damage to a CU program that is now high profile, in a power 5 conference and playing against teams located in most of the largest media markets in the country.. BAAAD form..and I haven’t even mentioned recruiting yet..
I think the outcome in tomorrow nights game against Villanova will speak volumes on Mac’s tenure as head coach of the Jays...

Yeah, my father hasn't ever heard that phrase either. Neither has my grandpa. I want to think that it was a misuse of words, but of all words, why the heck would you use that one?Omaha Cowboy wrote: Tue Mar 02, 2021 8:06 pm

Gosh, I don't even want to think about the potential impact on recruiting. Go figure, the best recruiting class ever and it could go down the drain over something incredibly misguided. That's the most Creighton-y Creighton luck ever.
As for damage to the program, I don't know necessarily about irreversible...but certainly not good in the near term. I think that the overall damage all depends on how Bruce/the powers that be, AND McDermott respond to the issue in the coming days and weeks. Ugh, my head hurts over all of this.

Re: Creighton Basketball 2020-2021
This entire situation has blown up nationally..
So yes, this could have the makings for irreversible damage depending upon how the university administration handles this, not only for the future of the Jays basketball program, but for recruitment of students to Creighton University..
What a stain and an embarrassment. Tom Shatel, in his column this morning, does not agree with a dismissal of Mac. I understand where he’s coming from..but after sleeping on this, I don’t see how the administration can come up with a solution other than asking for his resignation.. Looking at the big picture. And it pains me to say that...

Resignation might be the only option left unfortunately. 8 or 10 years ago I would say he could recover from this with a heartfelt apology. But not now, not in today’s world. Very bad Choice of words, career ending perhaps.

When you win as often as McDermott does you can get by with just about anything. If Omaha can easily forgive an armed white man for shooting an unarmed black man in the street down in the Old Market they sure are not going to care about a few racist words uttered by an emotional coach. Seriously this guy is not in any trouble at all as long as he watches what he says in the future.

That's where I am at this morning as well. Even 5 years ago you might be able to survive this with an apology and no slip ups thereafter. With the current climate? I am not sure.Cermak wrote: Wed Mar 03, 2021 8:31 am Resignation might be the only option left unfortunately. 8 or 10 years ago I would say he could recover from this with a heartfelt apology. I think a A LOT of it depends on what the current players say (I do wish we could get their thoughts), and what if anything other coaches/media say, and how long it stays in the spotlight (beyond the hacks in the World Herald, I mean the national media). If it's a special on an ESPN round table, you're pretty much sunk.

Re: Creighton Basketball 2020-2021
I am very saddened to hear of this news. I have met Coach McDermott numerous times and know that he is a great man (he invited us to sit on the bench during the pink out game while my son was battling cancer, and he even used him as motivation during the halftime speech)
I don't know what will come of it and it was an absolute terrible choice of words. I have never heard of this phrase being used.
I do however, hate the society in which we live. Everything is held under a microscope and examined over and over again. I am not condoning anything racist, but people do make mistakes, I am sure that everyone of us has. As long as it is a sincere apology and never happens again, I would love to see Coach Mac stay at Creighton. I just think that everyone is so quick to judge others, but never actually looks at our own faults. The internet magnifies this and people are able to comment and hide behind their words so many times. Hopefully the players are on board and accepted his apology as well. There should be some sort of reprimand, but that should be left up to Rasmussen and the university.

Re: Creighton Basketball 2020-2021
I agree with pretty much everything you all have contributed here..
Had this happened in the 90’s, with no social media driving the bus, Mac would likely easily survive this slip up..
I also believe Mac is a good man and not racist. His choice of words, obviously, was a GRAVE mistake..
My mind, sadly, believes the direction the university will go is asking for his resignation.. My heart hopes the team speaks up- both in voice and level of play on the basketball court..and shows solidarity and support of coach, understanding he is human and made a mistake..
Tonight’s game outcome, like I stated last night, might be a huge factor in what lies ahead for coach Mac and his future as the Jays head basketball coach...

Agreed. Unfortunately Twitter has become the court of law, and those with no connection to the program from thousands of miles away lose the context of all that Mac has done that is good. The good doesn't excuse the weird inappropriate phrasing, but it would ideally give him one more chance to make amends.skinzfan23 wrote: Wed Mar 03, 2021 9:11 am

I agree with your comments as well. It would be nice to hear from the players on how they feel as well. Was this just a slip up or was it something more serious that maybe has occurred in a different form earlier. I believe the players could help shed some light, although they must have taken it personally if it had to come out the way it did.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Wed Mar 03, 2021 9:31 am

I am curious to see how the players respond tonight in the game. I think that will say a lot for how they took it.

I do like this quote from Shatel's article speaking about the players reaction:
"If all is well, let’s hear it. If not, let’s hear that, too."

Re: Creighton Basketball 2020-2021
I wonder if a few game suspension is worthy in this scenario for McDermott. If it truly was a slip up, I would much rather see that than the university and community losing a great man who has given so much to this community.

But then it also says some players wanted to boycott, that is if this is to even be believed.. Be curious to see how this all unfolds.

What an absolute mess.. One week ago, all we needed to think about, and have fun with?- Scenarios on court which would lead the Jays to a Big East crown.. Now, insinuations of some players wanting to boycott..
It’s a nightmare none of us, even using our wildest imaginations, would have conjured up...

I think at this point I am leery on believing anything in regards to this situation that isn't from the players themselves. Jay Williams from ESPN is where the report of the 'some players wanted to boycott' and Rob Dauster (in the video) is whom mentioned the resignation attempt. Not sure if I quite believe either just yet, but we will see.
Either way, it's a complete cluster. If it's not a season ending injury to a key player, it's something stupid like this. We just can't catch a break.

I just hope the team is able to come together and play with unity and cohesion like Creighton is accustomed to. I hope they are able to forgive and show the world why Creighton is different.

Josh Dotzler has a FANTASTIC article in the Omaha World Herald (it's behind their Pay Wall, but it's about Josh Dotzler's thoughts on the situation, and he references the learning that his white father needed to do to understand what his mother, an African American, goes through... That synopsis doesn't do the article justice, apologies):

This piece written by Josh Dotzler, hits the nail square on the head.. Extremely well written so that anyone from any racial/ethnic background can understand and appreciate the point and perspective..Brad wrote: Wed Mar 03, 2021 1:41 pmHaven't got a chance to read it yet, but a co-worker said its very well written.MadMartin8 wrote: Wed Mar 03, 2021 1:11 pm Josh Dotzler has a FANTASTIC article in the Omaha World Herald (it's behind their Pay Wall, but it's about Josh Dotzler's thoughts on the situation, and he references the learning that his white father needed to do to understand what his mother, an African American, goes through... Re: Creighton Basketball 2020-2021
We’ll friends, not good. Not good at all..
After starting with a 5-0 lead, the Jays have completely fallen apart. Part of this is Villanova.. But part if it is ice cold perimeter shooting, lack of defense, and no inside game. Points in the paint minimal.. Christian Bishop just played his worst half of basketball of the season with 3 turnovers..
Bench players got tons of 1st half minutes. The Jays are simply getting out worked and out hustled by Villanova..
Absolutely the worst half of basketball by the Jays this season..
42-23 Villanova at the half...

Great run in the 2nd half...currently 12-0. Missed a couple of 3's now which could have cut into the lead even more. Gillispie for Nova is out for the game (hate to see, something with his knee)
At least the guys are showing some fire now.

Run got up to 17-0. Just under 3 min to go and down by 8, prob not going to get the comeback but love the energy this half.

Re: Creighton Basketball 2020-2021
Great comeback attempt.. Had the Villanova lead cut to 5, but could not get any closer.. Three straight good 3 point shot looks for Ziggy- all misses..Some crappy officiating down the stretch added to the “fun”..The Jays can’t even buy a free throw this season.. Not a good sign moving forward..
This game highlights the inconsistency of the Jays entire 20/21 season- all the pluses and minuses were on display tonight..
The first half sleepwalking incident saw the Jays down 19- their largest deficit of the season..and ultimately too much to overcome. Hopefully CU can close out the season with a revenge tour victory over Butler..
Oh well..
Villanova wins 72-60...

Great comeback and too bad that one or two of those 3's from Z didn't fall. DJ provided a great lift and spark in the 2nd half.
Not sure what happened to Mahoney....did he quit? Only played 5 min in the 2nd half and he didn't have it (again) I know there was some tension with him at the beginning of the season about Creighton not releasing a statement about all the riots and other stuff going on this past summer.

Not sure about Denzel.. He came out nailing a 3 to open the game..then seemed to disappear..skinzfan23 wrote: Wed Mar 03, 2021 9:35 pm Not sure what happened to Mahoney....did he quit? It was telling the number of bench minutes being much higher than normal.. But the overall team had an asleep as the switch first half..as good as they can be, and showed during the 17-0 2nd half run, the inconsistency this team displayes does not make me feel very food about any NCAA “deep run” chances in the tournament.. Anything can happen though..
I just hope the Jays can finish strong and avenge their OT road loss to Butler about 6 weeks ago...
