Bad start for them this year, but he had good records in years prior. That certainly seems rash.

Wisconsin fires Chryst; names DC Leonhard interim coach
Wisconsin fired head coach Paul Chryst on Sunday after a 2-3 start to his eighth season leading the school where he played, in the city where he grew up.
Wisconsin fired head coach Paul Chryst on Sunday after a 2-3 start to his eighth season leading the school where he played, in the city where he grew up. The surprising move comes a day after Wisconsin lost at home 34-10 to Illinois and former Badgers coach Bret Bielema.“This is certainly not a decision that’s taken lightly,” athletic director Chris McIntosh said at a news conference. “It’s not a game-by-game decision. This is a decision that’s based on where we’re at as a program.” Chryst was 67-26 as coach of the Badgers after being hired away from Pittsburgh. But the program has been backsliding. Chryst had double-digit victory seasons in four of his first five years at Wisconsin while winning three Big Ten West titles. The Badgers have gone 15-10 since.

This quick firing is ridiculous. Frost deserved to go. But Chryst had considerably more success at Wisconsin and firings like these are disturbing for College football and sets a dangerous precedent. Hope this blows up in Wisconsin's face they don't deserve success when you treat successful employees this poorly. Shame on the Badgers.Uffda wrote: Sun Oct 02, 2022 7:42 pm Wisconsin fires Paul Chryst five games into eighth season; Jim Leonhard takes over as interim coach

Well, technically if you're not winning 12+ games a year, you're not getting it done. But what the schools seemingly don't realize is that 9 win coaches aren't a dime a dozen either. So it's all or nothing.

Dude was making $5.25 million a year. A few respectable big ten title game losses isn't going to keep you employed at that salary very long.
Stable genius.

To what somebody said a few posts back, the West is wide open still. I'd be exuberant if they just win the West games left. That'd make 7-5. Heck, they might have room to go 4-2 in the West for a 6-6 record and go to the title game and get slaughtered.

I never watch them when they're on Friday. I don't understand why they play games on any day other than Saturday. But I always associated teams that play on Friday, Thursday, or even Wednesday with teams that nobody cares about
But on a quick look, there have been Friday, even a few Thursday games peppered in throughout games this century. Of course, they always play on Black Friday, but that's a given and I don't really count Black Friday games. Again, I don't know why, must be some sort of scheduling rotation. But I think I've found if you're a good team, you're only playing on Saturday. For example, Alabama hasn't played on a non-Saturday this entire century, aside from two Black Friday Games.
As long as the Huskers stay irrelevant, they'll continue to get scheduled on off-days.

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
Listening to ESPN radio yesterday while driving and a commentator was talking about how much $$$$ is in college football and how ridiculous that colleges are paying millions of dollars for coaches to not coach for them. They said from 2010 to this year the amount is somewhere around $500,000,000 million that public universities are paying coaches not to coach. And they though if they added in private universities, the total would probably be at least $700-800 million.Cermak wrote: Mon Oct 03, 2022 9:33 am

Okay, I get the west coast teams playing on Friday, as their night games would start at 9pm our time, and a "night game" would start at 5pm their time. Logistically wouldn't have room for them on Saturday night.Greg S wrote: Wed Oct 05, 2022 4:50 pm Last Friday you had Washington playing at UCLA. Re: Nebraska Football 2022
Wisconsin(like Nebraska once was) has been known for a strong O-line and stout defense. Their O-line has struggled this year too giving up 12 sacks. Thanks largely to Another Grant and Ajay Allen one of the few categories Nebraska actually leads Wisconsin is rushing yards per game. Wisconsin's defense is 8th in the BiG10 and has been outscored 89-31 in conference play. It's a stop the hemorrhaging mentality. I'm not saying I completely agree with Chryst's firing but this is the reality of power 5 college football today.
On a related note anyone care to bet Mel Tucker will still be employed by Monday?

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
Huskers favored only by 3 at Rutgers tomorrow. I bet only because they travel. Rutgers may be worse than Nebraska. Every offensive stat is double or more in favor of Nebraska. Rutgers defensive stats are better, but I think that's cause they played a bunch of nobody's aside from last week, and it seems like the Husker defense has slightly improved. Over/under is 50.5. I say the Huskers score the majority of those points.

If they take care of business as you'd historically expect against Rutgers, Purdue, and Illinois, they'll be 5-3 headed into the "gauntlet" of the last four games. Needing to win only one more game for a bowl will be a great position for them and they'll have much motivation. Just can't slip up against any of the more "beatable" teams.Cermak wrote: Thu Oct 06, 2022 4:31 pm Pretty much a must win for Nebraska as the schedule gets harder next month.

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
35-14 sounds appropriate for Rutgers. Purdue and Illinois I imagine will being favored over Nebraska as they should at this point. I think NU has perhaps a more realistic chance of beating Wisconsin and Iowa. I believe the Purdue, Illinois, Minnesota stretch will determine the potential for a winning season. A 5-7 or 7-5 record is equally reasonably attainable. If they split the different at 6-6 does Husker Nation advocate for Mickey?Busguy2010 wrote: Thu Oct 06, 2022 7:09 pmIf they take care of business as you'd historically expect against Rutgers, Purdue, and Illinois, they'll be 5-3 headed into the "gauntlet" of the last four games. If they go 6-6, I vote yes, keep him. Because so far in this coaching cycle there either is not a big slam dunk hire (10+ million type proven coach) that will come here, the other decent up and coming coaches have either said no already, would have no good reason to come here, or may not work out anyway (Frost was an up and coming coach and a slam dunk at the time too). If Joseph can get the program to a bowl game, which hasn't happened since 2016, especially given the circumstances of this year, I'd keep him.nebport5 wrote: Thu Oct 06, 2022 9:11 pm 35-14 sounds appropriate for Rutgers. The Wisconsin job opening up also complicates things for Nebraska, I never expected that job to open up this season. It's currently a more attractive Job than Nebraska. But they may keep the well respected interim coach they have. The Nebraska job in my opinion is the second best job currently open.
If Mickey wins 6, I would keep him as well, it won't be easy to win 6 since the team is so used to losing and the program has fallen so low. Frost was an epic disaster, I question if he will ever be a head coach again at least at the power 5 level. On a side note Adrian Martinez name now being mentioned as a possible Heisman finalist. As he is running wild in the Big12.

Both jobs are comparable. One thing that impacts Wisconsin is they've been tighter with the purse strings. Bielema was really frustrated when he left because they wouldn't spend on assistant salaries. It would be interesting to see the money available to each athletic department. Wisconsin obviously has the same conference money as NU but not sure they compare in other areas.

Both Wisconsin and Nebraska are comparable jobs, I would give Wisconsin a slight edge because of its success in recent years and the school is closer to large population areas like Chicago-Milwaukee corridor. But overall both jobs are similar in many ways. I'm pretty sure the Badgers will elevate their interim coach to Head Coach at seasons end.

Wisconsin has a better image to recruit to and more support from a bigger state. It is in Madison which is politburo liberal and this might put off anyone who isn't really leftist or fond of group-think and why a lot of my fam there just gives the whole area an eye roll and can tell you detailed recommendations for bars and restaurants in Door County, Appleton, and Milwaukee, but can't name a good place in Madison. That would wear out a lot of people.

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
I'm glad. I wasn't able to watch, but I listened. It could have gotten out of hand pretty early, and how embarrassing that would have been if it had. I checked out for a while and was surprised to see the Huskers went up 14-13 at that point, and doubly surprised they held it long enough to win. That's not how you want to win, but its a win. And to cue off Cermak, I do believe Scott Frost would have found a way to lose the last two games. On top of that, Scott Frost spotted them two losses, so really, they should be 5-1.
The performance the last two weeks doesn't inspire much confidence in me... They are still the Huskers, as evidenced by the fumbled victory formation snap to end the game. I really feel it will be a miracle if they get to 6-6 now.
These next three games are a really mixed bag. Purdue, Illinois, Minnesota. The Huskers are on that level where this could more easily be all losses, or somewhere between, than all wins. Its also the most important and most opportune stretch of the season left to be had.

Oh, and I know, really nit-picky, but it looks like they may be decidedly back to the stripes on pants and black shoes look. I think that makes three weeks in a row. I never cared for it. The one thing I liked about the Scott Frost era was that they dropped the stripes on the pants and the black shoes. It was a really clean look. All red bottoms and all white tops at home, flip it for away. That looks like that may be the one thing I miss.

Here's a fun (and embarrassing) fact: Mickey Joseph's .66 winning % (2-1) already surpasses that of Scott Frost's tenure at any point. It took until his 18th game when they beat Northwestern in 2019 to reach his peak winning percentage of .44 (8-10).

Good game for defense last night. After the blocked punt and Rutgers got the ball for first and goal at the 9, I thought it was close to inevitable that they’d get a TD. Obviously holding them to a field goal was critical.
Second week in a row defense pitches a 2nd half shutout.
