Late Run Leads Men's Basketball Past Villanova
Bluejays win sixth straight thanks to game-ending 6-0 run

A 6-0 run in the final 30 seconds lifted the Creighton men's basketball team to a 66-61 win over Villanova on Saturday evening before the 12th-largest home crowd (18,509) in program history. The victory, Creighton's sixth in a row, came in the first meeting between the schools since Villanova won the 2022 BIG EAST Tournament final over the Bluejays at Madison Square Garden last March.

What a great game, 12th largest crowd, 18,509!

I was worried after being down 60-61, but the Jays scored the last 6 and got the win!

After last weekend, I stated that was the best crowd all season, but last nights was the best this season and probably the best crowd we’ve had a couple of years.

I didn’t get there to see the opening tip but late in the game when Creighton made their run, it was deafening in the arena

They won but not the best shooting night for Kaluma and Scheierman. Good that Alexander was hot.

Woohoo!! Tough stretch coming up in terms of short turnarounds between games that aren't easy. Health and momentum will be key, especially whenever their next loss and/or blowout win comes. Gotta have a short memory and keep grinding.

#23 Men's Basketball Returns to AP Top 25
Bluejays ranked for sixth time this season

The Creighton men's basketball team is ranked for the sixth time this season, coming in at No. 23 in this week's Associated Press Top 25 poll. The Bluejays were ranked in the first five polls of this season, most recently No. 21 on Dec. 5. The Bluejays are also 16th in the NCAA's NET rankings. The USA Today Coaches poll will be released later today. Creighton is 11-3 all-time when playing as the nation's No. 23 team. Creighton's most recent No. 23 ranking came on Feb. 10, 2020. Two days later Creighton won at No. 10 Seton Hall, 87-82.

Creighton returns to the court on Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. game at Seton Hall (15-9, 8-5 BIG EAST). That contest can be watched on FS1 and heard on 1620 The Zone and 101.9 The Keg.

That is the thing I worry about with Creighton, especially with their past history and only really playing 5 guys a ton of minutes. They have to stay health.

That makes sense since usually the highest crowds are during the conference schedule, and 2020 was the year Covid disrupted attendance.

The crowd has been great the past 2 games, excited to see it hopping again, especially facing Hurley and UConn.

Surprisingly, not ranked in the Coaches poll but somehow Clemson remained. (the Jays have the most votes for teams that aren't ranked)

Either way, hopefully the Jays can keep stringing some wins together to get more people's attention.

Creighton returns to AP Top 25, UConn game sold out

For the first time since early December the Bluejays are back inside the AP Top 25. After winning six straight the Jays are ranked 23rd despite a NET ranking of 16, and that’s the poll the NCAA Selection Committee uses. The last time Creighton was ranked 23rd it played at Seton Hall two days later, which coincidentally is the same situation this week. Three years ago on February 10, 2020 the Jays beat No. 10 Seton Hall, 87-82 and no doubt they will be looking for the same result Wednesday. That will be a 5:30 p.m. central start on FS1.

The Jays also have announced a third consecutive sellout, the UConn game this Saturday will be a packed house. There are however limited standing room only tickets available Friday morning at 10 a.m. at the CHI Health Center Omaha box office. Student section tickets for full-time Creighton students can be claimed at the box office Saturday at 11:30 a.m., 90 minutes before tip. This will be the fourth sellout of the season.

After the huge attendance night on Saturday, avg is finally above 17,000 for the year:

Through 2/5/23
Rank School Average
1. Kentucky 19,775
2. North Carolina 19,381
3. Arkansas 19,006
4. Tennessee 18,212
5. Syracuse 17,907
6. Creighton 17,010
7. Kansas 16,300
8. Indiana 15,756
9. Illinois 14,951
10. Purdue 14,876

On a side note, I just saw a timelapse of Wells Fargo arena in Des Moines from this past weekend (rodeo, basketball and hockey prep) which looked pretty cool, but so glad that we have a regular schedule of events for Creighton that brings in over 17-18,000. Between the 2 rodeo events, basketball and hockey, that was probably still not even as many people as CHI gets for Creighton games.

What a 2nd half, jays were up 4 with 7 to go and completely shut down hall and Baylor got hot hitting 3 3’s.

19 turnovers, yet we win by 13 on the road

Great road win for the Jays and fantastic last 15 minutes..

Baylor S came up huge with clutch 3’s (making up for his multiple turnovers).. Great defense down the stretch. Not only did the White and Blue have to overcome the Pirates, but also some of the worst officiating I have seen, especially in the first half..

Props to Mason Miller and Reef, who made solid contributions off the bench..And the Jays out rebounded the Hall 36-13 I believe, which was also huge..

7 Big East wins in a row. First time ever..On to UConn at home this Saturday..

Creighton- 75
Seton Hall- 62…

I think the biggest thing with officiating is that most people can agree we just want it to be called consistent. This game was everything but. Like I mentioned earlier the first five minutes there wasn’t a single foul called, after that there were 20 fouls called in the final 15 minutes of the first half. And the second half there were only four fouls on each team until the very end, when Seton Hall fouled a few times.
Kalkbrenner couldn’t get anything in the lane because he was getting hacked every time. And then for Seton Hall, there was at least once where they shot a three and there was a clear foul by Creighton but no call. I don’t understand how they have three refs and not a single one can see a blatant foul.

All in all, I’m glad to come out with a victory

I wasn't able to tune in until late in the first half so I missed some of the reported officiating shenanigans. It got a bit hand-wringy midway through the second until Scheierman dropped those two 3s, but the dub made my Addy's wings that much tastier! Can't wait for Saturday.

Yeah the officiating in the 2nd half was better. The biggest thing was the inconsistency. There was a play where the Hall player completely ran into Mason Miller causing the ball to go out of bounds, but no foul call. There was also an instance where Hall was shooting a 3 and Nembhard clearly fouled the shooter with no call. Just mind-boggling how 3 refs and they can't see those calls.

This is a crazy stat (obviously it means nothing but funny how they look these things up) about Trey Alexander and how he has performed with Jim Jackson calling the game:

Trey Alexander's Stats
Jackson Status PPG APG RPG 3FG% FT%
With Jim Jackson 17.9 4.0 4.3 .457 .829
7 game totals 125 28 30 16-35 29-35
Without Jim Jackson 8.7 2.3 3.8 .328 .813
52 game totals 453 121 196 41-125 104-128
