Florida has escaped it so far, wonder if it will remain that way. Pretty impressive. Much of Texas is freezing with temps they have not seen this cold in decades.

The high of -6 today and the low of -18 for tomorrow have to be some of the lowest in recent memory.

January 1st of 2018 was a high of 0 and a low of -20, but before that day, you have to go all the way back to January 4th 2010 to find a low as cold as tonight's.

It is too hard to find data for the low highs, but I wouldn't be surprised if a high of -6 for today is the lowest high temperature at least for the stretch mentioned above, if not this century or more.

They’re going to be hurting across a wide swath of the south, especially Mississippi, with a lot of ice bringing down trees and power lines. They’re saying some people may lose power for 1-2 weeks from 1/4” to 1” of ice.

I don't think it got as cold last night as they were predicting. I thought it was supposed to be close to -20 but I think it only got down to -10 (still very cold but not near record levels)

Is that a weather app? I find that most of the time those are pretty inaccurate. I just looked at wowt's website and its -7....once again still very cold.

I have the weather channel's app on my phone and my in laws live in Cedar Rapids, IA and there are so many times it (like right now that it shows its completely sunny and it is more overcast there than it is here)

So the low was officially -15 and the high was officially -3 for February 15th.

Technically the high yesterday was -1 at midnight, but the temperature went down throughout the day, and the high that most of us saw was -7 around noon.

NWS is forecasting -21 for tonight (February 16th)... David Keller was talking about -28. Either way the record low of -12 for today went down and the record low of -18 for tomorrow is going down... We are practically already there.

Isn't there a not-so-scientific thought out there that says a volatile winter precedes a volatile severe weather season? Or am I just making that up? Either way it seems really believable now. We've had several years of relatively quiet winters and relatively quiet severe seasons, now BOOM, we have this winter... I'll just say for now I wouldn't be surprised if we finally have a more active severe season.

Agreed. I don't want to get too crazy, but the severe season has been a real snoozer for several years. They were issuing several tornado warnings for possible tornado conditions every year and then like flipping a switch it turned off. I think our last tornado warning was that June 16th 2016 storm that gave us the Bellevue tornadoes.

I don't hope for tornadoes but I do hope for a little something interesting. The criteria for issuing a tornado warning was pretty liberal and we haven't even had one of those pseudo-tornado-warnings. Just looking for a little something interesting this year. Even if only just more rain, thunder, and lightning.

It was June 16 2017 actually... But that makes three severe season since our last tornado warning. And like I said, they were pretty liberal in issuing them, we just really haven't had a whiff of severe weather since then.

The NWS reported -23 for Omaha. Maybe they are going off a different airport that may be closer to you. "Omaha" (Eppley) reported -23 that morning.

This graph shows that in an average winter, Omaha gets about 19 inches of snow. This winter is 40 inches so far. Just last winter we only got a foot.

Well that escalated quickly. Already looks like at least 3" and doesn't look like it will slow down for at least a couple hours. Coming down heavy. Also is a weird looking snow.

About 4” already in northeast Douglas Co. They’re saying 4-8” total now and issued a Winter Storm warning. Hard to believe it will still be in the 40s tomorrow, unless the snow is being caused by a warm front coming in.

Gotta love it... All the winter storms have way outperformed the forecasts. Hope that trend continues into the severe season.

With any luck, hopefully we’re well on our way to busting the drought with all of this moisture fueling more storms well into the spring and early summer.

According to that graph above, after today's snowfall we should be at about 46".

I measured 5.5" today and that stuff was WET. In an earlier post, I mentioned that 10:1 is a rule of thumb to estimate how much rainfall equivalent moisture is in snow. Most of our snow has been pretty dry, but today's snow totally makes up for the rest.

So I think we can reasonably estimate that we've gotten the equivalent of 4-5" of rainfall from our snowfall this winter, putting us at 8-9" behind still, using last year's data. But I think they just shelf the data every year... So we are probably ahead for this year so far, but still pretty far behind overall. It would be interesting to know where we sit for every 5, 10, 15 etc. year period.

One of the strangest snow fall total maps I've ever seen. Usually the measurements go up gradually as you go from south to north or west to east, not into a rough "circle" as pictured here.
