UNO hockey goalie making national headlines sits down with FOX42

Another good weekend for the UNO Hockey Team. They are ranked 16th in the nation and took both games at Miami of Ohio this weekend. In a sit-down interview, fox 42's Bill Steckis reports the team's top goalie is making national headlines. He's one of the best goalies in all of college hockey. Simon Latkoczy was named the national goalie of the month and goalie of the month for the conference.

“What did that mean to you?" Steckis asked. "I was thinking about it yesterday. There is only six months to the college hockey season, so you are one of only six goalies to get it. It's very special, but I couldn't do it without my teammates," said Latkoczy. That's the humble approach he takes every day at practice and on game days. His coach has seen the work ethic from the first skate of the off season. "He has had the same attitude all season long which speaks to his mental toughness. I could not be happier for a guy like that who puts in the work and has a great attitude. He's played some great hockey," said Mike Gabinet. That great hockey has opened up the eyes of NHL executives. He's not eligible for the draft, but he can sign as a free agent.

"I know it's all about UNO hockey right now, but in the future the free agent route is right there for you," said Bill. "I think it's an advantage for me one of 32 teams can pick me and not just one if I was drafted. All I can do is my job and get better every day," said Latkoczy. The work ethic comes from his upbringing in Slovakia. 89 of his countrymen have played in the NHL since 1958. He would like to be the 90th. "So the hockey there is a big deal," said Bill. "It is. I would say in my country soccer and hockey are the two most popular sports but in my city it's hockey. So, all these big names come from my country, and I want to play with them. They are my friends that I can't see every day," said Latkoczy.

I really hope we get good crowds for the playoffs. Playoff tickets were included with season tickets so at least you have a base number to start with.

Since it’s any seat for $17, the club section (103-106) sold really fast and then the normal season ticket holder areas (114-118, and 216) are mostly sold. The rest is fairly open so far.

Just a quick estimate. About 300 seats left for tonight's game. Saturday looks like just more available than Friday. Big Weekend!

It would be a very very long shot, but UNO isn't mathematically eliminated from the regular season championship. If UNO wins out, Denver and Western Michigan split this weekend and then both Denver and Western Michigan get swept next weekend, UNO wins the league.

UNO Hockey routs St. Cloud State on senior night
After losing 6-2 Friday night, the Mavs repaid the favor, taking down the Huskies 6-2 on Saturday at Baxter Arena.

Behind a sold out crowd at Baxter Arena, UNO hockey celebrated senior night with a 6-2 win over St. Cloud State in the regular season home finale. After the Huskies won game one of the series on Friday night by the same score line, the Mavericks repaid the favor on Saturday night. UNO closes out the regular season on the road next weekend with a two-game series at North Dakota.

Yeah I am very surprised North Dakota hasn’t bought all available tickets. They must be really down on their team. They traditionally travel like Nebraska fans.

I would love to go to the Frozen Four this year. Not one of the newest NHL arena's but might be my current favorite of those I have been too. Their outdoor festival area is great, they have a fantastic bar area that's open to everyone on the upper level (it's outside, very large, with great views of downtown) that's great to go between periods, and the inside even from upper levels has great views of the ice.

Down year continued for the NCHC. None of their teams made it to the Frozen Four. Opposite of the Big 10, they got Michigan and Minnesota in, along with Ohio State one win away in the Elite Eight.

Jon Martin remembered for starting Omaha hockey's first-goal tradition — throwing fish on the ice
