Drove by the former Julio building on south 13th street and there was a new sign up that said "Poke coming soon".

Also the building on 12th and Harney finally passed its inspections and is currently being built out for a July opening of "The Gatsby".

With this new Poke place opening, The Gatsby, Monster Club, Thunderhead brewery, Ika Ramen, and the new Berry and Rye it seems like the old market is getting a nice refresh of some new stores. It also got me thinking if there was any other hidden places in the old market that would make for another new cool restaurant or bar. Does anyone know what ever happened to the old Underground Bar underneath the French Cafe? I think it closed a few years ago and never re opened but would make for a pretty cool underground bar.

Gosh, that is stepping back a few years. Even I am having difficulty recollecting where those restaurants were located. Is that along Howard Street, west of 11th?

I'm pretty sure it was on the South side of Howard midway between 11th and 12th.

Monster Club opens tomorrow, 11 am to 2 am. Still no signs that the employees will be in monster garb...they posted a hiring blip and didn't mention anything about being willing to dress up. Darn.

To be clear, you two are talking about 2 different things.

1. Beercade 2 (same people behind the Benson Beercade) which is on South 13th
2. A new bar / arcade (similar concept) going in to the old market

And just like that, Friday was Galleria Circo's last First Friday. The owner decided that after only 3 months to pull the plug. I suppose the person who holds the purse strings gets to call the shots. Sad day because we had a lot of potential and we were just getting started. Had a really smart and talented curator and terrific art.

This will be called Godega Market & Coffee Bar and there website says that they are "Reinventing the neighborhood corner store". Should be a good addition to the old market in the old Juliet location.

I'm not sure why you're less than thrilled. Granted, I'll likely never shop there either, but that doesn't mean it's not good to have a youth draw in the area. Give them something to do besides skateboard next to my bedroom window.

Agreed! Great idea to have something like that to pull in a more diverse crowd to the Old Market. Mixing up the tenant directory is a good thing for an urban area.

Omaha business owners help reduce inner-city decay with new stores in Old Market
Across the nation, it’s a problem facing larger cities: Businesses moving out of downtown areas are leaving behind empty storefronts.

“Clothing, handbags, shoes.”

Sarah Dacorta took a chance five months ago when she opened her vintage clothing shop, Sunrise, near 11th and Howard. She came to the Old Market because there was an available space.

“People are just wanting to shop local, and so it’s sustainable, so it just makes a lot of sense,” she said.

Dacorta’s from upstate New York, where she’s seen inner-city decay.

“We need to really work on keeping our downtown vibrant,” she said.

There are more open properties here: Right next to Sunrise, an open space; and just down the street, Michael’s restaurant sits vacant.

Becky Uchtman has only been in the Old Market a week. She’s putting the final touches on her high-end flower shop, Matilde.

She knows about deteriorating areas moving here from Los Angeles, so she quickly made friends to help her find this space.

“For the people that are pulling it together and trying to reinvent themselves and reopen small business, there’s a new support for the kind of business model, and we’re all kind of scratching each other’s back. It’s a new start,” she said.

The city is careful to try and make sure businesses are ready to find success here.

On Tuesday, the Omaha City Council delayed a decision on a liquor license for the Mouth of The South restaurant in the Old Market until the owner can show the old property on North 30th St. has been sold. The restaurant is opening a second store near 11th and Farnam streets.

“The expectation is that people take care of their properties... especially in a sensitive place like a business district.”

David Kerr and Nate Flick understand that quickly replacing businesses that leave helps stem the tide of urban decay. They’re opening a small grocery store on the corner of 11th and Howard streets.

“Yeah, I think it’s important for most neighborhoods in general but especially for the Old Market because it is Omaha’s prime possession and its jewel. The longer these businesses are empty down here, the harder it seems for them to bounce back a lot of the time. So when we saw this space come available, we jumped on it so quickly.”

Revitalization in other areas — Benson, Blackstone, Dundee, Florence, and south Omaha — can reduce inner-city decay and retain the flavor of each neighborhood.

Uchtman said there’s another reason: “Why would you want to be in a strip mall when you can be here?”

Godega Market is scheduled to open around Christmas. Matilde opens in early November.
There is a link to the Godega Market, but it's to an Instagram post.

A new restaurant just opened in the Old Market called Indian Bistro, run by a chef who has cooked for dignitaries like India's prime ministers.

Chef Shambhu Singh wants to win Omaha hearts the best way he can — through their stomachs.

"My food, I know, basically 13, 14 years to Omaha, so people like my food," Singh said.

His son, Amit, said this restaurant is the product of more than 30 years of hard work.

"He's here in this market. It is easy to bring people from all over Omaha and once they will come here, they definitely will come here and try his food," Amit said.
These are the same folks behind Maharaja in Miracle Hills and Maharani at the Inner Rail. When I used to work at North Business Park, a couple coworkers and I enjoyed the lunch buffet a few times at Maharaja. Good stuff. BTW, Indian Bistro is located at 1010 Howard, where The Oven used to be.

It would have been nice if Channel 3 had bothered to give an address for the restaurant. From looking closely at the video it appears to be in the same location as the Indian restaurant The Oven was located.
Glad to see another Asian restaurant in the Market. I do wish the area had a Thai or Vietnamese dining option.

Swap the petrol for fancy fuel for people(coffee) and Godega sounds like a smaller, sexier, bougie Cubby's. It may work until if and when there's an actual grocery store in DTO. I wish them all the luck.

It could possibly work even then. Bodegas and konbini (in Japan) work so well because they sell the things you need randomly, without having to go really anywhere. This is why I am at the DGX fairly often.

I think this could be a great thing!
