Tonight's celebrity birthday trivia question on Entertainment Tonight was "which national news anchor got his start in Omaha, Nebraska?" Of course the answer was Tom Brokaw.
And of course I was a little irritated that they included "Nebraska" at the end of the question.

Unfortunately the group pictured in hoods burning crosses is from Nebraska. I wish they would say where in NE so I never go anywhere even close to there. Being gay, biracial, and liberal that would be like killing 3 birds with one stone. Or truck or bullet or whatever.

I read this article not even thinking that would be a picture from here. Looks like it was taken in Little Mexico. I remember seeing other pics and I was suprised at the turn out.

I think their goal was to make Nebraska seem exclusively rural while highlighting their point to the "modest lifestyle". They definitely made it seem like Omaha and Lincoln were non-existent.Stargazer wrote:I'm almost afraid to listen to this one... just looked at the video (at work)... nothing but tractors, corn and rural main street.

Was browsing around the Pop Sci web-site. There was a video advertisement for "America's Power" - a pro coal organization - on the side bar with a guy touting coal in front of what looked remarkably like the Old Market. Clicked on the ad and sure enough, it was.
http://www.americaspower.org/factuality
Their "Factuality Tour" promotion is a series of videos showing how coal gets from the mine to the power plant and why it is still a good source of energy. So far they have toured six spots, three of which are in the Omaha area. If you click on the little bulletins around Omaha on their map, a list of videos, photos, and articles will pop up regarding the MidAmerican Energy Power Plant in Council Bluffs, the Tenaska Headquarters, and, most interestingly for you train nerds, the Union Pacific Harriman Dispatch Center.
The videos are hit or miss as far as making Omaha look good since they filmed in winter.

When you consider Kiewit's role in coal... UP's... Mid American, Tenaska... all the coal fired plants around here... I guess you could say that we are something of a hub for coal.
Does that give us a 'black eye' ? I think I'd rather be Iowa with all of those wind turbines in the background.

Sounds impressive... but I'm sure it's a tiny drop in the bucket compared to the coal they haul. Do they have any dedicated lines to the wind turbine factory?

Absolutely, UP hauls way more coal than wind turbines, but relative to the overall wind market, UP is the transportation leader. UP made a conscious decision to penetrate this market and has been successful in doing so.Stargazer wrote:Sounds impressive... but I'm sure it's a tiny drop in the bucket compared to the coal they haul. Here is a shot of one of UP's trains at an unloading site. UPDS, a subsidiary of UP, coordinates the full movement of these trains from onload to offload. It is a really solid program.

I saw an ad for it on CNN and instantly recognised the Old Market in the background. Either way, its neat to see us used as a part of an ad campaign...TitosBuritoBarn wrote:Was browsing around the Pop Sci web-site. That's really cool. Susie Buffett seems so down-to-earth.
