CPKC Stadium - Downtown KC Soccer Stadium

Post by strangerthings »

$70 million privately financed soccer stadium with 11,000 seats. Main tenant is KC NWSL and will also hold concerts, collegiate games, and international matches. This is the first women’s soccer stadium in the world.

This is awesome. When the Royals did the redo of Kauffman there was some push back locally from groups that were mad they didn't build downtown (which might obviously be happening next). I always wondered why Sporting didn't look at building downtown (I know they got money from Kansas) or at least get pushback on going to the suburbs vs downtown.

This looks really nice.

This is cool. Will make their bid to get high level World Cup matches in 2026 way more likely.

It looks like the KC street car will run right next to the stadium as seen the the renderings.

I'm trying to place this - based off the bridge, would this be west of Bally's on the other side of I-29?

In some ways, I'm kinda surprised that Sporting wasn't pushing to move downtown with the notion that Sporting KC 2 and the womens team would get Children's Mercy Park. That kind of seems to be the way things work these days. A roughly 10 year old stadium wouldn't fit their needs as they try to move downtown to maximize revenue. This surprises me. Kinda feels like they would have said, "if anyone gets a new stadium in this town, it'll be us."

Budget is now $125 million. 11,500 seats up from 11,000 originally announced. New roof is curved but the new renderings lack a lot of material detail. 2024 opening

That looks incredible especially for a women's club and the location is perfect on the riverfront. I think with this and Des Moines getting a Soccer Specific Stadium this will hopefully put the pressure on Union Omaha for a DT spot.

Drove down to KC Monday. This stadium looks just incredible as you cross over the Missouri headed into downtown. Was shocked at how cool it looks.

$800 million in development planned for this area:

The Kansas City Current and Port KC have announced an $800 million development project near the riverfront.

Port KC, which owns the Berkley Riverfront development and surrounding area, are partnering with the Current to develop 10 acres near Berkley Riverfront Park and the Current’s new stadium.

The project will include office, retail and residential space and will be built in phases over 10 years. The proposed 2 million square feet of development will include approximately 1,000 multifamily residential units, with 10% of those being at 50% of the area median income.

Hopefully they can do something about all the industrial area surrounding this development and this project being an island surrounded by highways, multiple train tracks.

Greg,
Any thoughts on the royals new stadium possibilities down to 2 sites, one of which is on the other side of the river from this in North KC? Doesn’t seem like a very good spot for a new stadium. Seems very heavily industrial.

I think the East Village site (the one in traditional downtown KC) is a heavy favorite. Not enough details on the North KC site. I do think if the North KC one ends up being chosen, you will see a street car extension to it (and beyond). There's been a lot of talk about going that route anyway (in addition to the current extension to the Plaza, Westport and Brookside).

It also seems like this development, and the new Hotel Origin will be connected and continue growth towards RiverMarket. I assume these are all connected by trail on the river front?

What is the target income bracket for the tenants of this development? Maybe some people like the look of being surrounded by an industrial park on both sides of the river, then again KCs riverfront is mainly an industrial park along the Missouri river. On connectivity the streetcar should help somewhat.

I'd say it's probably not as much to do with an income bracket so much as a social bracket. There is a certain charm about blending industrial elements with green spaces, and there's also the $800M development going up around the stadium that will have bars and restaurants. Couple that with the street car line, I think the surrounding industrial components will have less of an impact than if it was just built in the middle of a bunch of factories

I've been to that specific riverfront area many times and would not consider it industrial at all. Dog park/bar, tons of apartments, huge park and a river. I don't really notice it to be industrial. It's also really close to the area around Vietnam Cafe that is being developed / remodelled.

This is what I mean by surrounded, all the orange highlighted areas are industrial areas but I do see what you mean, though that Southern area with amenities is divided by industrial buildings, train tracks and multiple highways. Still I can't help but imagine the view from one of those apartments, industrial buildings in a 360 view with two loud highways on both sides and trains that most likely will blair the horn when crossing the street.

Looking north you see park then the river and trees in the horizon. The north bank of the MO River is covered in mature foliage blocking what is mostly low-rise industrial in NKC. The flood wall on the north side of the river, behind the trees, blocks sound from the industrial northWest and SW view is downtown. Directly south is a bunch of trees in/around the rail tracks. East is the bulk of the industrial actually in view and the modern bridge blocks much of it too.
.
Really the complaint would be the trains. I can't say I've ever noticed the highway noise but trains yes.

Check out this new project in KC if you want to see something with a highway view. Take a look at 3D view

The industrial area to the north, NKC, is also poised for a major redevelopment. It's one of the 2 sites being considered for the new downtown stadium (granted it's not the favorite). The Royals owner was really impressed by the leaders of NKC and what the developers of that area have shown him, as he initially wasn't considering it at all. He did say that even without the stadium, that area will be going through a major transformation/redevelopment.

Trees cloaking is better than nothing, right? Though upper floors will still see the industrial park. Pedestrians have to cross several barriers to reach this island, with both car infrastructure pedestrian bridges and the streetcar; an industrial park is still what people will see going to and fro the area.

I looked at the 3d view of that apartment and I have to say. this area looks like it was a vibrant area, that has the scars of being destroyed by a highway. There are too many intersections built for fast moving vehicles right in front of this apartment complex that was wedged in, this area is hostile to pedestrians; replacing this intersection with a roundabout would make this area more pedestrian friendly.I also looked at the top view and looking at this area makes me claustrophobic looking at all those ramps and fast moving roads encircling this area, I can only imagine the noise pollution...

Maybe KC residents somehow think that car infrastructure and highways splitting neighborhoods is pretty to look at, I am glad that here in Omaha, we did not jump into the bandwagon of destroying neighborhoods with highways; as seen in southern cities like KC, Tulsa and the Texan cities, sure we have a few but we are planing on taking part of i480 down because it wastes too much space and its not pretty to look at.

You should check it out in person. The Riverfront Park was an old industrial dump and a Missouri Pacific Rail yard. Does not feel nearly as bad as you would think and there is a lot of development down there.
