2022 Fall Color Thread

Happy first day of Meteorological Fall!

Just a reminder about the timing of Omaha's Fall Colors.

First Colors usually show up around the last week of September.
Peak Colors usually happen the last week of October.
End of Fall color is usually the second week in November.

Some years we get a double peak one earlier in October and one Late October.

Can’t wait to start seeing Fall color in the next few weeks..Another reason why October is my favorite outdoor weather month in Omaha…

I have noticed some of the Maple trees in my neighborhood are already starting to look a bit lighter green. Very subtle and very early, but I do see it.

Noticed quite a bit of Sumac turning red around town. Also if you are up on a hill like I680 and Pacific looking towards regency, there is definitely a small tint of yellow starting on the trees.

Looking at the highs for the next 3 days, I suspect this will accelerate a bit.

I think once we head into the 2nd week of October, we’ll start to see color in full effect..and I can’t wait for that. October in Omaha is my absolute favorite weather month of the year …

I went to Talladega Alabama this past weekend and drove through Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama. LOTS of trees. I've never been down that way before. I wasn't expecting much color just yet, and there wasn't much, BUT what I did notice is that a lot of the leaves are already brown. You'd probably have to go down there in about 10 to 14 days to see if it came through, but I'm kinda thinking it will be a light year.

When I got back, I noticed my maple tree suddenly started dropping leaves while I was gone, and it hasn't turned red at all. It is usually the reddest tree in the area. I'm thinking the drought has a lot to do with it. Both here and there.

What did the back to back hard freezes do to the fall colors?

I was surprised when I flew back in to Omaha yesterday how much fall color was left on the trees and many trees were still green. That said, today’s winds probably aren’t going to help the situation.

I did notice all the ash trees around town are completely bare. That’s too bad because they have some of the best yellow around.

Yeah, the 2 consecutive days of an early hard freeze last week, along with the crazy winds yesterday, have put a bit of a damper for our Fall color this year…

Not sure about that, its just different. Its actually nice noticing other trees we don't normally notice some years.

Sure the Ash, AP Ash, and Locust trees didn't have a good year, but the Pin Oaks are as orange as I can remember in a long time, other oaks are looking nice and yellow, there are some verities of Maple that are looking spectacular right now, and lots of burning bushes and crab-apple trees that are looking really bright.

I went over to Fairmont Park in Council Bluffs the day before we had our first hard freeze, and got some spectacular photos, mostly yellows but also oranges and reds. I will try to share some pics from there as well as from the Field Club Trail a few days ago.

Had a meeting in Nebraska City today. Still pockets of color all along the way, but plenty of bare areas too. Along the Platte River there were lots of yellow cottonwoods.

I'm just not seeing it this year... Yes, there's a few trees with color, but the vast majority of what I'm seeing is green, brown, or bare, or luckily yellow. This year just downright sucks compared to its potential. I give this year a C, at most. I went up to Valentine last week, went through Fremont, West Point, Norfolk, etc. All those places along the Elkhorn River were better than what I've seen around here, but it still wasn't great.

I have seen a lot more colors in neighborhoods this year. Seems like individual trees have good color but any forest areas are already blank for the season.

I have been very impressed by the fall colors this year. At this time the colors along the highways are almost done but the color in the city is spectacular. Today i .took a drive and what i saw was the best i have ever seen here. In Council Bluffs the color in Scarlet Oaks , Cogleywood and Forest Drive in the hills were so beautiful. Also a drive through the cemetaries was quite nice. Fall is my favorite.

My Maple tree finally is getting its usual color now that half the leaves are off it. Looks good, but it took forever compared to normal. I can say at least as far as I can see from any window in my house, there is not much color. I'm used to seeing much more color in my immediate field of vision.
