Forgotten Omaha

I've lived in Nebraska all my life, but only in Omaha for half of it(20 years). I know some of you have been here for much longer, like when West Omaha really was after 72nd. I hear stories that I've never heard recently and wanted to know what else you guys have.

Primarily there was a post on the Omaha subreddit talking about a man that vanished, but turned up in Omaha and became a personality in the area.



Another one that I'd never heard was the murder of Jane McManus. The surprising thing for me was where the house resides...right on the corner of Pacific and 67th as I drive by here almost daily.

What other Omaha history do you have that many might not know about?

Wow. I hadn't thought about this one in awhile. Dumb college freshman me went to the state pen the night of Otey's execution in Lincoln. Me and I have no idea how many hundreds (maybe thousand plus?) of other dumb college kids, supporters/protesters, and general onlookers. At midnight. On a weekend. The first week classes were starting back up. My roommate ended up on the front page of the Daily Nebraskan's coverage... crowd surfing at an execution. It was effing nuts.

Sooooooooooo glad social media and camera phones weren't around for that.

Edit: It was page 8/9, not the front page. In my defense it was 31 years ago. But that's my roomie's shoes at the top of the photo.

I was a kid in the neighborhood that happened in. Lived on 68th between Howard and Leavenworth. For a time until the murder was solved, we couldn't play outside without someone's parent being there.

It was an eventful neighborhood in the 70's as we also got hit by the big tornado in May of 1975.

I remember the panic when the Joubert murders happened, as well. Was just a few years younger than the victims. I rememebr the neighborhood being largely free-range children and then not a single kid outside overnight. And it stayed that way for YEARS...
