Sysco is a giant conglomerate that has swallowed 250 companies.As we were distracted.
There are only 3 national suppliers.
Cheap exploitable suppliers.
They have lobbied for 40% of lower wages for truckers because their lobbies take advantage of deregulation.

I watched this a few weeks back, quite a shame. I wish there was a way to find a easy to peruse list of restaurants that source from someone other than Sysco. Right now, the best route is going to their website and hoping they market the fact.

I'm as guilty as everyone else at doing this, but Sysco is just the easy name to remember and say. There are a few other similar suppliers that do the same thing. US Foods comes to mind. I've lamented for years that we're piling into restaurants and paying out the nose for what is mostly a frozen product from Sysco that gets dunked in the fryer for a few minutes. It's really obvious if you pause to think about it. Remember when no restaurants had "battered fries" and then suddenly every other restaurant had them? It felt like an overnight change. Really, it was just Sysco and US Foods adding a new popular option. Also, notice how the appetizer section of the menu at every restaurant looks (and tastes) exactly the same? When one restaurant gets a new appetizer it seems like everyone else does too.

This monopoly has to end. We can't have an exploitive company ruining our food.

I won't name them restaurant, but I remember the moment I realized restaurants aren't all that. I ordered some wings and I literally watched the cook walk to the neighboring grocery store, 5 minutes later comes back with a bag of Tyson frozen wings and a bottle of sauce. They turned out good and I ate em. But it was just like a "damn" moment. I didnt realize.

I still patronize some restaurants, but I don't really expect a higher quality product just cause I walk in and am seated.

A few years ago, a friend and I checked out a new BBQ place that had gotten some buzz in the local press. I had to use the men’s room, took a wrong turn, and ended up in the supply room——-stacks of large cans of Sysco BBQ sauce.

True story. A number of years ago I was eating dinner at what was then a very popular pizzeria in Kearney. (Not there any longer, but whatever…) It was August, and I ordered some pizza and a salad. As I perused the menu I glanced out the window at a grocery store directly across the street, and a roadside produce stand that advertised they had tomatoes. The waitress returned with my beer and informed me that the restaurant had run out of tomatoes, so I couldn’t get any on my pizza or in my salad. I’m sure I shot the waitress an incredulous look, and said something to the effect that “How can a pizzeria run out of tomatoes at 6 pm?” She replied “Our truck didn’t arrive today.” Not yet finished, I responded “Oh my goodness, look! There is a produce stand right across the street. Next to a grocery store! They have tomatoes for sale. Problem solved!” She looked at me and said “I don’t think we can do that.” I offered to walk across the street and pick up a few tomatoes if the restaurant would reimburse me. My offer was not accepted.
Yes it was funny, but also terrible sad.
