N-92 (West Center Road) - N-31 (204th Street) to US-77 (Mead)

Post by BRoss »

NDOT is going to be having an open house on Tuesday, May 5, 2026 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Yutan Veterans Country Club (1581 Yutan Rd, Yutan, NE) regarding plans to widen N-92 from 204th Street to Mead along with the stretch of US-275 along 240th Street between Center and Dodge. It is tentatively slated to start in 2032.

I learned from this that there is a very short link - L-28E - that is the curve from where US-275 splits off 240th Street near Center.

NDOT wrote: Identified as Mead – US-6/N-31, the proposed project would expand the existing two-lane highway to a four-lane highway along three highway segments. The proposed segment of N-92 would start just east of the U.S. Highway 77 (US-77)/N-92 junction and extend east to the N-92/US-275 junction. The proposed segment of US-275 would start approximately one mile north of the US-275/Nebraska Link 28E (L-28E) junction and extend south and east to the US-275/U.S. Highway 6 (US-6) junction. The segment of L-28E would start at the L-28E/US-275 junction and extend south and west to the L-28E/N-92 junction.
Proposed project costs are estimated at approximately $250-$300 million and would come from federal and state funding sources. Construction could begin as early as 2032 depending on available funding and may occur over multiple construction packages.

So they’re spending the money to modify Dodge and 275 now just to come back and change it in 6 years?

I'm guessing the roundabout they are putting in will remain the same. The notice says it will start about a mile north of the junction of US-275 and L-28E, which is a bit north of Center, and going south from there.

I'm thinking the right northbound lane will end at the slip lane that goes to the eastbound Dodge ramp and the left lane will continue to the roundabout and northbound US-275 ramp.

With this project not slated til 2032, I don't think there'll be an re-work.

I saw engineers out today at Skyline and West Center.... did anyone attend this open house? Are they planning on doing this work earlier than 2032?

lol, no, still 2032: https://dot.nebraska.gov/media/mejn3ct5 ... -final.pdf

Why are they doing open houses for projects this far out that have this little impact?

This project is an enormous waste of money. The roadway could be kept as a 2-lane road but with roundabouts added.

Traffic speed is not a priority here. Putting in light signals at intersections like Skyline and 275 will be unsafe with the way people drive 70mph+ through the area today. Larger roundabouts with a bit more of a curve to them are the safest thing for the area, and there should be 3 or more of them from Sanctuary Ridge to the Life Church area to really slow down traffic in that stretch.

I don't see a problem with expanding the road. They are wanting to keep ahead of further Western Expansion. With the 204th corridor is getting built out suburbs are only going to keep on growing. With the Elkhorn River, I would think 240th will be the next major N-S street. Yutan may be borderline suburbs by 2050.

It's going to be extremely expensive and difficult to build any major developments past the Elkhorn River. The sewer infrastructure would need to be built from scratch, and it's a massive flood plain, unless we're forgetting Waterloo, Fremont, etc. essentially being islands for several days during the 2019 floods.

Good point, but do you think they would just not have any major streets/developments past 204th? Maybe development just jumps right ahead to Yutan and they build more Lakes in this area.

And it looks like they're currently planning on just a 2-way stop at Skyline and West Center, and no improvements by the Life Church / Privada further east.

My biggest concern: they're making these improvements seemingly with the goal of increasing traffic speed *while adding more lanes*, and I think we're going to see really unfortunate accidents at Privada + Skyline with entire families getting killed in a gruesome collision. I still want to rip out the weird interchange at 204th and West Center... the area is not a freeway. The speeds that people drive up 204th are reckless, and if we four-lane West Center, those same overly aggressive speeds will appear on West Center. Just imagine a family leaving Life Church (and they almost all turn left out of the Life Church) and getting t-boned by a car heading 75mph westbound as they're finally free from all the stoplights of West Center. It's inevitable.

I don't think anything major would be particularly insurable without major infrastructure work that the city seems uninterested in undertaking. More lakes is probably accurate.

From what I can tell, it does look like flood risk drops off pretty quickly west of the Platte river.
