Growth and expectations of more growth prompted the Omaha-based Securities America to plan a new 87,000-square- foot headquarters in the Southport area of La Vista.

The three-story building scheduled to open in February 2008 will be near PayPal's two buildings and a professional office complex, reinforcing the corporate image of the area that recently became home to a Cabela's store.

I just recently heard of the Osaic name change. I thought it was Securities America rebranding. I didn't realize they were purchased.

If they're anything like their former neighbor PayPal was, they're bringing in new hires as fast as they're doing layoffs. That never made any sense to me.

I used to work at a gas station that sold Powerball tickets and I would occasionally banter with the regulars about it. Two things customers said to me always stuck with me:

Me: You know your chances of winning that are like 1 in 300,000,000?
Them: Still infinitely higher than the chances of people who don't play.

Me: I could just light your $2 on fire if you'd like. The outcome would be the same.
Them: It's not about having a real chance at winning. You pay $2 for the dream! From now until the drawing I get to fantasize that I have the winning ticket and what I'll do with all the money. That's worth $2.

I used to go to Vegas pretty much monthly. Two things:

One, they put ATMs right near the craps tables. I watched a guy hit the ATM for $200, bet it, lose and then hit it up for another $200. Repeatedly. I finally looked at him and said "I tell you what. You give me the $200, i'll tell you you lost and we'll both be happy.

Two, what would it take for winning to change my life? $1000? Nope. $10,000? Nah. $100,000? A little. A million? Maybe, but what are the odds? I probably have some bricks with my name on them as the donor. When I realized that I quit going.

PS, evidently working at a growth company in Omaha is kind of like that. Who would have predicted that Hammocks.com would ultimately be bought by Walmart & pretty much vanish? Same with others. The odd one out is the one that stays in Omaha. Start, grow, get hot, get bought out, leave. Nobody saw Enron coming. It's not just Omaha.either. Sprint in KC? Meredith in DSM, though there are still some jobs there.

Thanks! I'll manage. In Osaic's case, I doubt they're replenishing the back-office workforce. I'd say more, but I'm in a non-disparagement agreement.

As for the lottery, I treat it like entertainment. (My wife treats scratch-offs like exercise). I assume the $ is gone. Like Vegas, I know I'm going to lose money, but the slower I do so, the better.

Pretty much. Critical mass, and Omaha can't achieve it. Neither can KC, and STL died in the 70s.

Only companies I can think of that will last for decades to come are FNBO and UP. Look at Nebraska Furniture — wouldn't surprise me if their headquarters is in Dallas before too long. Maybe Mutual/Omaha, but growth/startups? I think their lifespan is about ten years.
