IWCC plans new student center
A two-story student center will rise at Iowa Western Community College in the next few years and should be ready for occupancy during the 2010 academic year.
Meeting on the college's Shenandoah campus Monday afternoon, the board of trustees voted unanimously to move forward as quickly as possible in obtaining bids for construction of the 71,000-square-foot student center.
The board also voted unanimously to move forward as soon as bids can be obtained and approved with construction of 72 additional units in the Reiver Suites student housing complex that would hopefully be ready for occupancy in the fall of 2009. The new dormitory rooms would complete an existing Reiver Suites complex that was designed for future expansion. With utilities already in place, construction is expected to move forward quickly.
Plans call for the new student center to house the culinary arts department, a cafeteria, bookstore and the campus library and will be the first step in plans to expand the facilities that focus on health care careers. The new student center, which will face southwest toward the Reiver Suites, will be built adjacent to Lewis Hall, the campus building that houses child care, engineering technology, deaf interpretation and computer-aided design, among other specialties.
"This is the first domino, if you will, that has to happen for the expansion of the school's nursing and health care programs," IWCC President Dan Kinney said.
Voters in December approved a $22 million bond issue that would pay for renovations, new classrooms, lecture halls, examination rooms and labs. The college would add space for a new library and bookstore, and would also build simulator laboratories that will enable students to complete clinical experiences. Long-range plans also call for additions to the Art Center to provide more space for the music and arts programs.
