Replanting Trees

I have a question. I was talking with my parents and my in-laws who moved here from Minnesota and Missouri, respectively, and both states have a law that states when developing land, when you take out mature trees, you must replant 1 substantially sized tree for each tree you remove. Apparently this is not the case here in Nebraska, as nearly every time land is developed it appears they just rip out trees and don't replant many in their place. This just makes me sick to my stomach sometimes, seeing all the nice trees around town just being ripped down in the name of urban sprawl.

Does anyone know if there is or every was a law like this in Nebraska?

Not sure about "Nebraska", but Omaha all the local municipalities around it do. Some are quite strict.

Could you observations be linked to the Emerald Ash Borer in some way? We have (had) a lot of Ash trees around here, but they are pretty much guaranteed to be extinct. Just pointing out that Ash trees could account for a lot of removal.

I would contact the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum. Really high level of expertise and access to less common trees.

Replacement trees must be an approved species.

Existing Tree = Replacement Trees
<4” diameter = 1 tree
4”-9” diameter = 2 trees
9”-18” diameter = 3 trees
18”-27” diameter = 4 trees
27”-36” diameter = 5 trees
36”-48” diameter = 6 trees
>48” diameter = 7 trees

3.1 to 6 inches = 2 trees
6.1 to 9 inches = 3 trees
Over 9 inches = 4 trees

I know where I used to live many years ago in Cedar Rapids Ia the replant requirements had a clause that if it was not possible to plan on the property they were removed from they still needed to be planted but could be elsewhere. Had to be somewhat nearby. Do not remember all the details. Does this come in to play here?

Yes, some of the trees removed for the development on the south side of 192 and Dodge were mitigated in the park with the lake on the north side of 192 and Dodge. I believe there were so many trees that needed to be planted it made sense to put some over at the lake.
