Kellogg Omaha Plant - CLOSED

Post by Guest »

I have heard from a few people that work at the Kelloggs plant in town that the company is considering shutting the Omaha plant down. The talk was Kelloggs was downsizing and labor disputes which they locked a plant in Memphis out over were looming at more plants including Omaha. If it went down wouldnt bode well for Omaha in the long run since they have been a big industrial employer for Omaha.

Kellogg's union workers could face lockout
KETV wrote:In October, Kellogg’s locked out more than 200 union employees in Memphis, Tenn., for not agreeing to the company’s proposal. Kellogg's wants to cut pay by $6 for new employees, make them all part-time and not pay them benefits.

In Omaha, 500 Kellogg’s workers with the BCTGM Union worry what's happening to their southern colleagues will happen to them in May when the union contract expires.

This February 10th article in the New York TImes regarding the Memphis lockout provides a more in-depth picture on the situation.

Labor Battle at Kellogg Plant in Memphis Drags On

I think this opening sentence in one of the paragraphs speaks mountains of truth:
As often happens in labor disputes, the two sides have vastly conflicting versions of what is happening.

Sounds like they're closing a similar sized plant in Ontario.

Need to read the comments by the readers of this KETV story. Reading these there is no middle ground on the side the people posting are on.

http://www.ketv.com/news/kelloggs-emplo ... t/26007568" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Kellogg's employees brace for the worst and hope for the best; worried the company will lock out union employees like it did at its Memphis plant last year.

Kellogg's union workers could face lockout

A national labor dispute could affect hundreds of jobs at an Omaha plant, and the apparent options are tough for some union workers to swallow.
More

On Thursday, workers installed gate locks on the perimeter fence at the 96th and F streets plant.

Some people are pretty proud of themselves. Having a degree is nice but frankly there are lots of jobs that require one to limit the pool, but don't really require one to actually do the job. There are lots of jobs that are hard, nasty, and even require a lot of skill that deserve a better wage than they get. Sometimes the suits really do fantastic work and deserve big money but most may as well be equivalent to a laborer, doing what they are assigned in the best manner possible. They both should have a decent wage you can raise a family on.

The union rejected the company's recent labor agreement proposal. Kellogg management according to rumors is threatening to close one to two plants.

Kellogg workers reject contract changes
Jennifer Bowman, BattleCreek Enquirer wrote:Kellogg Co. said it “must take steps now” to sustain its cereal business after union employees overwhelmingly struck down proposed changes to their labor agreement over the weekend.

Only 21 of 1,289 votes cast last week were in favor of the proposal, said Trevor Bidelman, president of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union Local 3G in Battle Creek. The proposed contract would have affected employee health care benefits and wage adjustments for employees at the company’s four U.S. cereal plants — in Battle Creek, Memphis, Tenn., Lancaster, Pa., and Omaha, Neb. — as Kellogg grapples with poor cereal sales.

Similar article from the World Herald, I have heard from some people working there that they could get locked out by corporate at any day now after the union voted this down. Sounds like a mess

Omaha Kellogg's plant workers walk out on strike

Maybe I'm overly cynical but I'm sure there's a non-zero chance that strike moved this location to the top of the 86 list.

Been there a long time
Employed many people with well-paying jobs.
Had many local contracts support what happened there.
Used a lot of grain grown in this region.

But sure, tear it down because it is an "eye sore."

I hope the building finds a new owner who can, at some level, positively impact the local economy. I understand that this may be difficult for a somewhat specialized business, but I cannot see anything going in the location that will have as big of an impact as this plant has had for 50+ years.

What do you suggest goes there that will have as good or better the local impact on the economy? Serious question.

Be interesting to see what happens to the property. The Kellogg sign viewed from I-80 is an Omaha fixture, but that will be gone in a few years. Probably one of the more impressive looking manufacturing plants in Omaha just by its sheer size.

I can't see many businesses wanting/needing a 52 acre property at least in this day and age. I'd say down size and update the facility then sell off the rest of the property.

The strike was national across all of their plants, to my knowledge. It seems like the main thing going against it was the plant itself was old and out of date.

Yeah, I just heard a story yesterday about a Tyson plant closing because it's reached its end of usable life and modernization through building a new location is more desirable. They could get new economic incentives and have a more modern plant that does not need as many employees.

Nobody is knocking the building’s importance and what it did for the community. Not sure how suggesting they redevelop the site could send someone on a tantrum, but here we are.

Let’s just leave it empty as a monument to the past m’kay?

Where did you see "leave it empty as a monument"? The suggestion was to find a new owner who at some level could positively impact the local economy. It was even qualified to say it could be difficult.

It's very large and completely flat with Railroad Tracks. Hopefully Omaha the the Chamber step in and get it shovel ready for a big time industrial development. We don't have a property like this anywhere in Omaha.

Most of our flat areas are in flood plains, this is not.
Much of our new industrial areas are not rail served and can be difficult to get rail access.

This was my first thought as well. Rail, interstate, surrounded by homes (workers). Central location in the US.
Hopefully not a warehouse but instead some light industrial. Assembly line for something.

Omaha hasn't "bagged the elephant" in decades. The Western Electric plant was a huge win for Omaha. The Class facility was to a lesser extent. But Omaha hasn't had a serious inquiry since. Micron, BMW, Mercedes, all failure to get.

A long time ago Omaha scored the "Big Four", Armour, Swift, Cudahy & Wilson beef processing plants. They employed thousands.

The loss of Kellogg's & Bimbo came out of the blue but in truth it's understandable. Old facilities.

Not even a bridesmaid anymore. And available land is less and less available.

Just wondering if Kellogg's approached Omaha leaders with some kind of wish list. Hope Mayor Stothert has something to say. It would be a shame if this slipped thought the community's fingers.

While this industrial park is important to Omaha, it hasn’t aged particularly well and is a bit of an eyesore I’ve always thought.

It stretches for a good distance along I-80. And for people driving through Omaha especially those who have never been to Omaha before this is one of the main impressions they get of the city.
That’s something to consider when the time comes to redevelop the former Kellogg property.
