After a decade at 2566 St. Mary’s Ave., Completely Kids has outgrown its home but not its neighborhood.
The organization, which aims to educate and empower children and families, has started an $11.3 million project to expand and renovate its headquarters. The project is expected to be completed by May 2019. Until then, the nonprofit’s offices have moved to a space in the Omaha Tower on 72nd Street near Mercy Road.
The expansion, which will add an additional 13,000 square feet to the 16,000-square-foot building, will allow for classroom space for parents to take classes to help them learn English, learn budgeting or study for the GED. Those courses can help break the cycle of poverty for families, Parker said.
The project is expected to be completed by May 2019.
The renovations and expansion also will add a commercial kitchen. The current building has a small kitchen but lacks a stove. For the past 10 years, hot meals have been prepared with just a microwave and hot plates.
The larger cooking space will be used for healthy cooking classes and will allow for an expansion of the weekend food program, which provides bags of food every Friday to elementary and middle school students who may otherwise have little food for the weekend.
