Yankee Hill is selling a 50-acre portion of the golf course, southeast corner, and reducing their footprint substantially, while keeping it an 18 hole course. Par is reduced a few strokes but but will be reduced by over 1,000 yards. It will reduce both property taxes and maintanance costs for the club. Chateau Development is the potential buyer and is planning to build an apartment complex. If the sale goes through, its a huge parcel of land for multifamily residential.

I think for Omaha, we have a glut of courses in our metro. I think some could and probably should follow suit. I am sure there are struggling courses in the city. Like Yankee Hill, they can sell a portion of the land to reduce overhead, while retaining a useful course for patrons. Once developed, the portion sold should increase the property value and lead to additional property taxes (except for Miracle Hills, which is still not annexed).

Plans call for a 5,400-yard course that would play to a par of 68 or 69. The current par-72 course is a little more than 7,000 yards.

Isn't a par of 72 for 18 holes the "standard"? Seems like that might turn off a few die-hard members if they got to a smaller, non-typical layout.

That is correct. Just look at the business that Elmwood Park Golf Course does compared to Benson or Johnny Goodman. Nobody likes to play short courses unless you are with your 6 year old...and at that point you should hit up Warren Swigart or Westwood.
