Massive City Budget Shortfall

Post by John Q Taxpayer »

I see our fair mayor is laying the groundwork for once again burdening the already overburdened tax payers of our fine city. After running to remove or mitigate the restaurant tax when dispensing of former Mayor Suttle - this one decides golly darn this this is a new found windfall to hide yet more inefficiencies. This one got used to the crack that was the restaurant tax and used it for general funding of city function. Now I’m a conservative Republican whatever that means but this hippocrit has got to go. You know how you can tell if a politician or political leader is lying ? There lips are moving. Sorry Jim Stothert - you made your bed - time to lie in it. Let’s get the recall started on this one. Any media members with half an ounce of credibility should be all over this thing but I doubt we’ll hear a peep.

Sorry Jean Suttle - can’t give you a pass on your poor choices.

Signed -

I will not be getting no food stamps. No unemployment. No food pantries. No $1200 stimulus check. What I will get when this whole thing unwinds is to pay two or 3 times the restaurant tax I am paying now. I probably get to pay a higher cell phone tax and sales tax and any other taxes they can think of. I was going to get stuck no matter who the mayor or president was. It is written in stone.

I sound mad but I am not. I'm actually over it. Still not liking it but I'm resolved to my fate.

On a positive note it brings tears to my eyes to see the good work those food banks and their donors are doing. Truly a bright spot in this nightmare we are living.

Well the city and it’s infrastructure can decay because there’s no money to pay for anything, or we can face the reality that COVID-19 poses challenges to every single aspect of life and we’re going to have to just take the brunt of those problems.

The City needs to the opposite. Moratorium on restaurant taxes until there is a semblance of industry recovery.

In a bout of idiocy ... did a City really need to put out the brine trucks on Thursday? Did the City really need to clear the top deck of downtown parking garages that haven’t seen a car in 30 days. Even the previous light snow.

Bulletin! Due to social distancing, and, every major employer not a hospital being closed, we will not be sending out brine trucks. Weather forecast calls for all snow to be melted by noon tomorrow anyway. Stay home! Use this as an excuse to self isolate. Note: we will clear around hospitals.

The outside pools are closed all year. Can't say that I disagree with the Mayor here given the cost of just filling them and getting the chemicals right. Got to say also that the number of drownings in the Platte and other rivers might go up given the lack of swimming pools this summer. After 2019's flood, the bottom of these rivers is going to be scoured and trenched deeply.

Oh, the irony. Lots of riots have been about underserved communities. So the poorest among us won’t have the money to get kids to a cool place like rivers or day trips.

Come on Mayor ... use your noodle. Figure something out.

The indoor pools are open or opening. That includes the pools in North Omaha. Once again, Southwest Omaha which has a lot more working class areas than you might realize is not going to get anything.

“the city’s three indoor pools at Montclair, Mockingbird Hills and Common Ground Community Center”

None of these pools are in North Omaha. I see Common Ground-Elkhorn, Mockingbird- approx 102 and Mockingbird and Montclair - 132nd & W Center. I would say N. Omaha S Omaha and MidTown aren’t getting anything.

Kellom pool was closed and demolished in the late 1990s. Omaha list only 3 indoor pools and 2 probably serve the SW are better than the North area.

Five of the city’s 15 outdoor pools are scheduled to open July 1 after a group of donors pledged to cover the roughly $700,000 cost of operating them, Mayor Jean Stothert said Monday.

The pools are spread across the city: Roanoke, Elmwood, Hitchcock, Miller and Zorinsky.

Suzzie Buffet called the mayor on her home phone Thursday night and said open the pools no matter what it costs and we will pay for it. Final answer!

Whether it’s Sherwood or the Scotts, who cares? Good for who ever did this. That’s a ton of cash that will make tense city a little cooler.

Hah! This Mayor is a addle minded as they come. Even a dimwit would have found a way.

I’m happy some of the big money people finally stepped up and put their money where their mouths are. Although, the cynical side of me says nothing is free.

Suttle would have opened all of them and just ran in the red all summer. Kicking the can down the road.

And then “be forced” to tear some out in the republican voting areas due to budget shortfalls.

Here's a article concerning possible funding coming from Douglas County's stimulus package. The County is offering up to $25 million to the City will hopefully be matched by the State. There are also further details about the vote and related topics to debate about.
