KOIL Omaha radio broadcast from 1962

[Omaha Cowboy]

I find these Kennedy Era radio broadcasts fascinating. This one is from Omaha AM radio station 1290 KOIL. The date- March 12th, 1962. Basically 60 years ago. The radio commercial spots are equally fascinating and a couple made me smile (especially the Hinky-Dinky Supermarket spot). A different time and a much different world. And just for fun, I was 7 months old on March 12th, 1962, lol. Enjoy this-

I remember in 1970-71: when I was 9-10 years old, listening to the Top 40 rock/pop format on the “Mighty 1290” KOIL..

Omaha radio didn't invent top 40. We are guilty of worse. The "Elite 8" format. This was invented by Storz Broadcasting when it was discovered that even cutting the playlist to the top 40 was too expensive in terms of records and management of the records for the DJs. The Elite 8 format also was in response to the marketing data showing that people rarely listened to the radio for more than 15-30 minutes, so the Elite 8 records would be DJ programmable and cover the time most listeners were turned in

Yes, they also still had "personality DJ's" well into the 70's and early 80's.

I remember winning prizes from KOIL on the phone a couple of times in the early 70's. I rode my bike from Sunset Hills to 90th and Indian Hills Dr to pick up my Partridge Family T-shirt!

Around about 1968, I was an altar boy in the 8th grade getting ready to serve the 6am mass, and responded to an on-air contest——-“if you are the fifth caller, you will win tickets to see Ike and Tina Turner at Rosenblatt Stadium.” I won. Unfortunately, the concert was cancelled due to Tina’s miscarriage, or so I found out later.

Speaking of early 70’s KOIL memories.. Do any of you remember the KOIL Wrap Rap folder? You could pick up at Baker’s or Hinky-Dinky.. It had some real cool psychedelic artwork on the front and back, I remember using that folder for school in the 4th grade, lol…
