Any chance our region is able to capitalize on the wave of investment in the chip manufacturing industry? Chip manufacturers are probably going to reinvestment in existing locations, and there are no nearby chip plants, so it's a long shot. Similar to trying to get an auto plant; we are too far from existing parts manufacturers/end users to be competitive in landing projects like this.First new memory fab in the U.S. in 20 years will create an estimated 17,000 new American jobs
BOISE, Idaho, Sept. 01, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Micron Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: MU), one of the world’s largest semiconductor companies and the only U.S.-based manufacturer of memory, today announced plans to invest approximately $15 billion through the end of the decade to construct a new fab for leading-edge memory manufacturing in Boise, Idaho. This will be the first new memory manufacturing fab built in the U.S. in 20 years, ensuring domestic supply of leading-edge memory required for market segments like automotive and data center, fueled by accelerating adoption of artificial intelligence and 5G.
This is the first of Micron’s multiple planned U.S. investments following the passage of the CHIPS and Science Act, and represents the largest private investment ever made in Idaho. Co-locating the new manufacturing fab with Micron’s R&D center at the company’s headquarters will enhance operational efficiency, accelerate technology deployment and improve time to market.
With the anticipated federal grants and credits made possible through the CHIPS and Science Act as well as the incentives provided by the state of Idaho and the support of the governor, the new fab will create over 17,000 new American jobs, including approximately 2,000 direct Micron jobs, by the end of the decade.

So 17,000 temporary construction jobs, and then 2000 actual new jobs.the new fab will create over 17,000 new American jobs, including approximately 2,000 direct Micron jobs, by the end of the decade.

TOP STATES FOR BUSINESS Ohio Governor DeWine says Intel delay on $20 billion chip plant is about ‘leverage’
Another major chip factor, but this time in the midwest! It's amazing how much land places have to have ready for this type of project. Facebook Data center in Sarpy is something like 150-200 acres. Leaders have always said we lack megasites to get massive factories. If 1000 acres is what we need, we are kind of out of luck. It's difficult getting that much land under a single ownership around the metro.Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine still has high hopes for Intel, even after the company announced that its plan for a massive semiconductor plant east of Columbus could see its scope scaled back or construction delayed.
“I truly believe that this is the Midwest’s time. I believe it’s Ohio’s time,” DeWine, a Republican, said in an interview.
Intel said it was canceling a July 22 groundbreaking ceremony at the site while the company waits for Congress to pass the CHIPS Act, which includes $52 billion in assistance to the U.S. semiconductor industry to revitalize a key segment of the domestic supply chain.
“The idea of delaying a ceremonial announcement, this sucks,” Intel CEO Patrick Gelsinger told CNBC’s Sara Eisen during an appearance Wednesday at the Aspen Ideas Festival.
...
He said another draw was the region’s infrastructure, including a 1,000-acre site in rural Licking County, east of Columbus, with ready access to the massive amounts of water needed for a modern semiconductor plant. Included in the $2 billion in incentives Intel stands to collect in Ohio is nearly $700 million in infrastructure improvements.

Ground was broken on this plant on Sept 9th.
