Portion of Omaha’s Dodge Street to have lane closure for one year

Omaha drivers can expect to see several lane closures, including one affecting a portion of Dodge Street. According to Omaha Public Works, there will be several lane closures on different streets beginning Monday at 9 a.m. Dodge Street between North 38th Avenue and North 40th Street will be restricted westbound in the outside curb lane for building construction. The lane closure will be in effect for one year.

Dodge has basically become one continuous lane closure maze, and not for the first time. I do not understand why the city simply doesn't care about restricting lane closures as much as possible, especially on the single-most important street in the city.

Or maybe it's a great opportunity to point out that, much like the Lakers over extend their reliance on LeBron, Omaha relies way too heavily on throughput via Dodge, and if that single street is hampered everything goes to shhiii. If you think about it, major ways to get out of downtown west to 72nd include.....Dodge. That's it. NW Radial is okay, but you still have to crawl through Benson if you want to reach Maple.

Gotta improve and diversify ways to get around. Yes, some of that includes car-centric infrastructure, but we also do a poor job of prioritizing transit - dedicated bus lanes on both surface streets and the freeway, imagine if CB's 1st Ave trail existed down the Leavenworth and California St/Underwood corridors. If one street (Dodge) gets restricted and everything goes south then it's time to reassess how you're moving cars/people.

Private developments impacting local traffic in Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Driving around Omaha seems to be getting trickier, especially on Dodge Street during rush hour. Most major roads heading east or west in Omaha are under construction somewhere. “I will literally leave through the back ends of Lowes just to avoid Dodge Street. I would go pretty far,” Brenda Villarraeo of Omaha said. Long-term lane closures remain at 72nd and Dodge while Crossroads is redeveloped, the roads around it are widened, and improvements are made to infrastructure.

The Dodge street closures wouldn't be as bad as it is, if the city had any coordinating skill. Dodge is 6 lanes and Cass is 4 lanes normally, but both are down to 2 each.

I'd love to see these lane counts as permanent personally. BRING ON THE TRANSIT AND BIKES!

WOW the whole Crossroads area is a freakin nightmare this week! Cass and Dodge both totally messed up and someone told me Dodge was about to go down to one lane. It's just an unbelievable mess. It's just awful.

A week ago I was driving through there in the right lane, and when the lanes shifted by 74th the dude to my left kept going straight. Damn near hit him. Guy insisted I came into HIS lane. Fortunately I got it all on dashcam. First time I’ve retrieved footage from it.

I noticed earlier this week that 42nd street between Center and Leavenworth is partially open again (one lane each direction). Therefore, visitors to Nebraska Medicine can again get off I-80 at 42nd and have a straight shot.
