Net taxable sales rise nearly 6%

Nebraska's net taxable sales in July, the latest figures available, rose 5.9 percent, or $93.8 million, compared with July 2003, according to the Nebraska Revenue Department.

The state recorded $1.69 billion in sales, compared with $1.59 billion in July 2003. Taxable sales include retail products, fast food purchased in restaurants, building materials and utilities.

Excluded are sales of new cars and tax-exempt items such as food sold in grocery stores. The numbers provide a basis for evaluating the health of the retail economy.

Sales for July 2003 and July 2004:


Omaha, up 7.7 percent, from $543.3 million to $585 million.

Ralston, up 13.4 percent, from $3.9 million to $4.5 million.

Bellevue, up 3.3 percent, from $28.6 million to $29.6 million.

La Vista, up 1.7 percent, from $12.4 million to $12.6 million.

Papillion, up 7.8 percent, from $9.9 million to $10.6 million.

Grand Island, up 4.7 percent, from $60.5 million to $63.3 million.

Lincoln, up 7.1 percent, from $244.6 million to $261.9 million.

North Platte, up 4.4 percent, from $28.9 million to $30.2 million.

Norfolk, up 7.3 percent, from $33.9 million to $36.4 million.

July motor vehicle sales declined by 4.7 percent, from $278.1 million to $265.1 million.
