UNO chancellor says $25M investment will help avoid tuition increase

In this time of tightening budgets for university systems, a $25 million gift from Barbara and Wally Weitz will help the University of Nebraska-Omaha avoid a tuition increase. A $14 million portion will create the Weitz Innovation and Excellence Fund, awarding strategic UNO priorities that may benefit from new investment. The goal is to elevate good programs into national recognition. UNO's chancellor will annually ask for proposals from 2024 through 2029. The $5 million portion will help the Dr. Joanne Li recruit and retain top leadership at the university. $6 million will help redevelop a historic building at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis. "We will not be falling behind because of this," Li said about the gift.

$25 million gift aimed at keeping Nebraska on the ‘cutting edge’ of education

This week it was announced that Omaha philanthropists Barbara and Wally Weitz made a $25 million dollar gift to support higher education in Nebraska, mostly to the University of Nebraska-Omaha. UNO will receive a total of $19 million, and Barbara Weitz was asked why this is the right time for such a commitment.

“You know, 30 years ago I would have said, I don’t know,” she said. “But now I know the kind of energy and research and things that are happening here, especially on our campuses in Omaha, that are amazing, and they’re leading the way in many different fields.” The Weitz Innovation and Excellence Fund will put focus on elevating programs already putting UNO on the map while supporting others in critical areas of need locally.

Super great news for both schools. Would love to see the Aviation school become a bigger name, considering SAC and the Eppley expansion occurring here.
