Big burgers at Bob’s Bar & Grill keep Martinsburg on the map

MARTINSBURG, Neb. (KOLN) - Martinsburg’s main monument is listed on the menu at Bob’s Bar and Grill - the home of the big burger. “It’s a pretty good-sized burger. It dwarfs the bun,” said Pete Keiser, a customer. “There was no measuring. It was a handful of whatever (Bob) could fit in his hand and squished on the grill.” The menu item was whipped up by the original owner, Bob Lamprecht. When he started the bar in 1977, people can memories of him smoking a large cigar while plopping patties on the grill. His daughter and namesake, Bobbi Keil, currently owns the bar, and though the workers don’t smoke cigars anymore, she’s still honoring her father’s wishes for food service.

“He wanted big portions for cheap price,” Keil said matter-of-factly. The burgers weigh 11 ounces raw and only cost about six bucks. If the burger doesn’t fill up the customer, the sides certainly will. People can choose from a wide variety of items that include fries, cheese balls, onion chips, onion rings, tater tots, gizzards, mushrooms. A full order weighs two pounds, and a half size weighs one pound. “If you get a thing of French fries, you’re going to get enough that feeds six to eight people,” said Betty Jo Addison, a customer. “And for the price - you can’t beat it, and the atmosphere is very family-oriented.” The low prices are because Bob’s Bar and Grill only accepts cash or checks.

Bob’s Bar and Grill opens at 7 a.m. for coffee, and if you’d like to try Martinsburg’s massive burgers, the grill is fired up from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Don’t forget to bring cash or your checkbook to 5205 Main St in Martinsburg.
