Family Fare closing 2 stores

I had the cashier this morning tell me that they are closing on Feb. 20th. This will hurt the area as Bakers will be the only option for those with limited transportation. Hopefully the space gets a new occupancy.

NO!! They have such great organic and gluten free products (horrible produce) but I cannot say it's surprising - always dead when I'm in there. Northeast Omaha really just never gets nice things. Not that anyone in this city particularly cares.

Noooooo! I go there every time I'm up there and I have dear elemental memories of going there with my dad as a kid. Sad face.

Sigh, I can't say I'm surprised. It was my go to place to find clearance stuff. My guess is not a lot of money up there, so you don't have many people buying the more expensive healthier foods until they go half off. MAN, a lot of memories there. I'm gonna miss it.

Glenwood recently completely remodeled the Russ Market so I wonder if that had anything to do with it. The Family Fare is right in the town square and I have never been it, but it looks pretty small.

Russ's Market used to be Newman's Thriftway. It was probably due for a remodel. I would imagine that with the Hwy 34 bridge it's easy enough to zip into Bellevue and hit up Walmart, so that may have bled off enough grocery revenue from Glenwood that it can no longer support two grocery stores. Also, I don't think the town square Family Fare (formerly No Frills which was formerly Kaiman's Supermarket) is the type/size/configuration of grocery store that Family Fare prefers to operate. Still, you'd think a town of around 5,000 could support more than just the small Russ's Market.

The one on 30th was. I'm sure the other poster is referring to the Glenwood location, though. It's in a downtown area and probably has a nicer building underneath.

Yes, they are both owned by SpartanNash. While SpartanNash operates in 10 states, Supermercado Nuestra Familia only operates in Nebraska.

That's some good news. With all the closings that Family Fare, No Frills, Bag N Save had over the years, them at least converting instead of closing is a sign they might still have a pulse. I know Family Fare may not be everybody's favorite flavor, but I like having the option.

Kinda sad to see that area go from three options to one. That now makes me wonder if this opens a door for a Walmart Neighborhood Market to slide in. Their model is to move into so called food deserts, and this is definitely one of em now.

Would love to see them come in and tear out the old Family Fare, build new, and breathe some new life into the strip mall next door. Much like what happened at 90th & Grant.

I specifically remember that term used when the first one came to town. Don't know what news outlet I read it from, but I know I wouldn't have pulled that out of my arse.

I remember it so well because I was actually opposed to the Walmart Neighborhood Market at the time. I believe it was ~ 2014 when the first one came here at 90th & Grant. In my neighborhood, we had No-Frills, Hy-vee, Bag N Save on Dodge, Bakers on Ames, and Bag N Save on 90th, so I thought they were fulla shlt to use that term because it wasnt even a "food desert". So I thought their use of that term was slick, and I thought "More like a Walmart Desert". And I was right in my concern about that because almost simultaneously when that place opened up, the Neighborhood Market parking lot was packed, while most of the others became ghost towns and eventually shut down.

Anyway, I think the old Family Fare there in Florence would fit that model. I think they basically use Neighborhood markets to take some pressure off the supercenters. Pretty much every Neighborhood Market is dam near equidisdant from a neighboring supercenter, and having one up in Florence would be just about the correct distance from the 50th and Ames location. Coupled with, well, Florence is now a food desert. There's really no other main grocery candidate that could fill the void there.

Yeah, like I said, I was calling their bluff with their use of "food desert". What they actually meant was a "Walmart desert".

I didn't make that term up, I know I read it when Walmart Neighborhood Market came to town, and I knew they were full of it. Besides, I don't think anybody here thinks I'm smart enough to come up with that. I know I wouldn't have come up with that

So if you look at the locations of Neighborhood Markets relative to Super Centers, you see they're all about the same distance away. Good examples are: 132nd & Maple is about smack dab in between Irvington and 168th & Maple. 90th & Grant is about between Irvington and 72nd & Pine. Saddle Creek is between 50th & Ames and 72nd & Pine, 50th & L is between 72nd & Pine and 72nd & Giles. And all the others are about that same distance from their respective nearest Super Centers.

food desert would be a harsh term for what Neighborhood Market does. They do move into areas that are maybe underserved on grocery stores. I think they look for areas with high concentrations of housing, but no grocery store within 10 minutes in any direction.

I live near the Neighborhood Market on Capehart in Bellevue. There is no other grocery store within 10 minutes. You have to go to Bakers on 36th and 370 or the Plattsmouth HyVee if you don't want to go to the Neighborhood Market. Do I define my area as a desert? No. Underserved? yes. They fit a niche.

I am also thinking of the 50th and L location. When built, if you wanted to hit a grocery store living in the 50th and L area, you had to go to either 50th and Harrison or 50th and Grover to find a store. Again, not a desert, but underserved for the person making dinner and just needing some eggs or bread.

If you lived on 114th and Giles, the 96th and Giles location fills the same need. You either have to drive to 84th and Giles, 144th and Q, or 72nd and 370. Again, underserved, but not a desert.

Good grief. When they came to town some 11 years ago, it was NOT I who reported that they move into "food deserts". I heard it from some news outlet. I could never remember which, but as I've stated several times, I thought that term was full of it. Their first location was 90th & Grant and that was the furthest thing from a food desert.

And as I've explained thoroughly, the neighborhood markets are so almost exactly equidistant to their relative supercenter, its pretty obvious they are there to take stress off the supercenters and gain what extra revenue by being closer to more people.

With Florence all but vacated of grocery options, this would be about the right distance from 50th & Ames.

I hated to go there AI route but is this enough to prove I ain't fulla |expletive|?
